Food companies stand in line to see higher commodity costs as a harsh summer drought shows little signs of easing in time to bring down prices. To make matters worse for the group, strapped U.S. consumers are viewed as more likely to trade down to value products before accepting higher food prices on common items. At risk: CAG, KFT, K, TSN, SFD, GIS, HNZ, POST.

Credit Suisse is out with a defense of Outperform-rated Smithfield Foods (SFD), saying that the recent selloff is overdone and presents a buying opportunity. Lower fresh pork prices slammed Smithfield's margins in FQ4, but analysts see strong exports helping to lift domestic prices later this year.

More on Smithfield Foods (SFD) FQ4: Net profit slips to $79.5M from $98.4M, dragged lower by falling margins at its fresh pork ops due to high feed costs, while pork supplies rose and retail demand was softer than expected. The stocks of a number of meat sellers perk up as the group starts to draw notice from analysts after the latest round of earnings reports came in strong, with improved margins powered by higher retail chicken and beef prices. Also pitching in, the uproar over the pink slime additive used in beef seems to be petering out a bit. Sector movers: Smithfield Foods (SFD +2.2%), Pilgrim's Pride (PPC +3.9%), Sanderson Farms (SAFM +2.4%), Tyson Foods (TSN +1.4%).

The pig herd is set to expand to 117.1M this year - the highest level in at least 50 years - estimates the USDA, while Chinese production is forecast at more than a 25-year high. The result could be an end to a big rally in hog prices and continued gains for consumers like Sara Lee (SLE).

Tyson Foods (TSN +0.6%) COO Jim Lochner says that all the talk about "pink slime" additives has cut into ground beef sales. Pink slime has been used by meat companies for over 20 years and has USDA-backing, but just recently caught the attention of consumer groups and grocery chains due in part (most likely) to the filler's unfortunate monicker.

Smithfield Foods (SFD -1.3%) execs hit a number of topics on an earnings CC ranging from the firm's increased tie-in to NASCAR to the upside that free trade agreements will have for exports, but the headliner may be the CFO's revelation that bankers are again pitching Sara Lee's (SLE +0.8%) meat business to it. "I don't think necessarily we'll have to go to the table. I think the table will come to us."
