    American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) and United Continental (UAL) will face a trial over property damage to the World Trade Center buildings after a judge in New York ruled that he couldn't determine if insurance payments covered the damages that World Trade Center Properties LLC is seeking. In a court filing, the carriers are alleged to have been negligent during the terrorist incident.

    Airline stocks open weak with a new report from an industry group highlighting that profit margins on major carriers fell to -1.5% for the first half of the year, compared to -0.4% a year ago.     United Airlines' (UAL) website is back online after a "network outage" issue affected its operations at airports and its website. At 4:30 ET, the FAA issued a ground-stop for all United (including Express) flights destined to Newark or San Francisco, two of United's hubs. The airline has been struggling with computer issues ever since it combined some of its major computer systems in March.

    Airline shares are down marginally today, girding themselves for air travel disruptions as Tropical Storm Isaac approaches New Orleans. United (UAL -0.2%) and Southwest LUV -1.2% have already announced plans to cancel flights out of New Orleans on Tuesday and Wednesday. Cancellations will reportedly take effect starting at midnight.     Besides disrupting oil production in the Gulf of Mexico, Tropical Storm Isaac also starts to wreak havoc with airline flights. According to flight tracker Flight Aware, over 1K flights have been cancelled over the last two days. The longer the storm meanders in the Gulf, the bigger the hit carriers will take for the quarter as their refund policies broaden beyond the coverage of insurance.

Northrop Grumman (NOC +1.4%), United Continental (UAL +0.9%), and UPS (UPS +1.2%) all brought in more than $100M last year from the USPS, but topping the list is FedEx (FDX +2.4%) at $1.495B.
