Oil companies such as Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Venoco (VQ) and Hess (HES) are looking to exploit California's Monterey Shale, whose untapped deposits are estimated at 15.4B barrels, or over four times the reserves in the Bakken Shale. However, the industry is facing stiff opposition from the state's environmental lobby, which is concerned about the substances used in fracking and the potential for setting off earthquakes.

A majority of Venoco (VQ -1%) outstanding shares vote in favor of the $12.50/share buyout led by CEO Timothy Marquez. Deal Professor recently was critical of the deal, writing VQ's board failed to negotiate with Marquez for a higher amount and gave him a "free option" on the company since he hadn't arranged the needed $385M-$400M of financing for the deal.
