    • Traders are a bit jump on GNC due to the strategic review ongoing at the company. While a GNC-Vitamin Shoppe (VSI +1.6%) merger has been bandied around for quite a while, Morgan Stanley said the probability of that outcome was low in a note to investors issued yesterday.

    • Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE:VSI) appointed Jason Reiser as Chief Operating Officer effective July 11, 2016.  As Chief Operating Officer and a key member of the executive team, Mr. Reiser will have overall day-to-day responsibility for operational execution (store operations, merchandising, supply chain and IT) and for leading those teams through implementing the Company's reinvention strategy. Mr. Reiser joins the Vitamin Shoppe from Dollar Tree, Inc. (successor to Family Dollar) where he was most recently Executive Vice President, Chief Merchandising Officer for its Family Dollar business.

    • Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE:VSI) is selling $125M worth of convertible senior notes. Up to $50M of the proceeds will be used to buy back shares from note purchasers, and most of the remainder to make buybacks via other means.
    • In tandem with the move, the vitamin retailer's buyback authorization has been upped by $100M. $200M worth of buybacks were previously authorized. CEO Colin Watts: "Consistent with our stated goal to finalize our long-term strategic plan and communicate it in early 2016, we will continue to review further opportunities to increase return of capital to shareholders over time,"

    • The U.S. Department of Justice indicts executives of privately held USPlabs for criminal conspiracy to distribute toxic substances contained in their dietary supplements Jack3D and other products. According to the DOJ, the company altered its labeling and packaging regarding ingredients, made misrepresentations to regulators, retailers and consumers, knowingly and willfully sold products containing toxic substances and made false claims about the effectiveness of the products.
    • The DOJ also brought 12 civil actions, including five last week, but did not specify who they were directed to.
    • After hours action: Herbalife (NYSE:HLF): down a fraction; GNC Holdings (NYSE:GNC) down 7%; Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE:VSI): down 5%.
