Sprint (S -2.3%) files suit to block the proposed AT&T (T -1%)/T-Mobile (DTEGY.PK -6.9%) merger. The carrier claims the deal would "entrench the duopoly control of ... the two 'Ma Bell' descendants," harming retail customers and independent wireless carriers. (PR)

August jobs numbers were impacted by the 45,000 Verizon (VZ) strikers, but the finance sector actually added jobs in August, and no one sees that growth continuing. "Expect to see more negatives" in financial jobs, IHS Global Insight says. "There will be less deal-making, less lending and there will be pressure on profits. Firms will cut back on people.”

Nomura thinks there could be a slowdown in iPhone (AAPL) sales in September, as buyers wait for the hotly-anticipated next-gen model, but sees Q4 demand making up for it. The firm also believes Sprint's (S) acquisition of the iPhone may be a mixed blessing for the carrier, as it could trigger a price war rivals T and VZ are better-equipped for.

Wells Fargo reiterates an Outperform on Sprint (S +3.5%) after channel checks show the carrier to be faring well against Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) and AT&T (T), against whom it's struggled in recent years. The firm speculates Sprint, which soared recently on a report it will carry the next iPhone, may be getting a boost from its cheap data pricing.

A J.D. Power study finds Verizon (VZ) to be the most reliable wireless carrier in the vast majority of the U.S.; AT&T (T), by contrast, is placed "at or close to the bottom" of rankings for much of the country. Verizon is hoping its reputation for superior coverage and reliability will help the company's premium pricing strategy succeed.

Earlier it was reported striking Verizon (VZ -1.5%) workers adding to the closely-watched jobless claims, leading to the obvious question: How can a striking worker reap UE benefits? Now comes the answer...only in New York. Verizon workers in the Empire State look to take advantage of a rare law that could open the door to benefits for strikers.

Verizon (VZ -1.5%) and Intuit (INTU -2.3%) announce a strategic alliance to give small companies the ability to use smartphones and tablets to swipe credit cards using INTU's GoPayment app and VZ's handheld card reader - compatible with most Android phones, Blackberrys, iPhones and iPads.

Samsung (SSNLF.PK) reportedly plans to sell its popular Galaxy S II smartphone in the U.S. via AT&T (T), Sprint (S), and T-Mobile - but not Verizon (VZ). At first glance, this is good news for Motorola (MMI) and HTC (HTCCF.PK), and incrementally so for Apple (AAPL). But it's possible Verizon's just waiting for Samsung's rumored 4G Celox phone to arrive.

Analysts find mostly good news but some bad in the report that Sprint (S -0.7%) will sell the new iPhone (AAPL). Wells Fargo: "With an iPhone in its arsenal, S’s value message will continue to resonate with customers - especially vs. T and VZ." But "be careful what you wish for," Baird says, citing pressure on Sprint’s EBITDA given "upfront iPhone subsidy costs."

Verizon (VZ) may have settled its labor dispute with workers, but the 45K strikers will be added into the August unemployment report - only partially offset by VZ's replacement workers. As a result, the closely-watched jobs number will likely come in weaker than originally forecast for Aug.
