- Thursday, December 30, 2010, 2:52 PM Delta Air Lines (DAL -1.2%), JetBlue (JBLU +0.4%) and AirTran (AAI +0.1%) say they’ve rebooked most passengers stranded by the NYC snowstorm, but they might be less lucky if the same type of storm hits next month when business travel picks up. Downsizing means the airlines lack excess aircraft to pick up slack and move more passengers. 1 Comment
- Thursday, December 16, 2010, 12:52 PM Despite the challenge presented by fuel costs, Southwest Airlines (LUV) expects unit revenue growth in the fourth quarter, aided by bigger planes from Boeing (BA), and Southwest's expectation of progress in acquiring AirTran (AAI) and moving into East Coast markets. Bigger planes could mean international destinations, like Central America. Comment!
- Tuesday, December 14, 2010, 12:27 PM The U.S. will probably clear Southwest Airlines' (LUV) $1B plan to purchase AirTran Holdings (AAI), the American Antitrust Institute says, though the deal is likely to bring change to low-cost airlines' business models. Comment!
- Monday, November 8, 2010, 10:22 AM This holiday season, Google (GOOG) is offering free in-flight WiFi services on three airlines, naturally, using its Chrome browser as interface. Google will pick up the tab for 700 planes in the AirTran (AAI), Delta (DAL), and Virgin America fleets, allowing Chrome to reach an estimated 15M passengers. Last year, Google's WiFi promotion included only Virgin America and 50 airports. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, October 22, 2010, 7:18 AM AirTran (AAI): Q3 EPS of $0.12 misses by $0.05. Revenue of $667.9M (+11.8%) vs. $685.9M. (PR) Comment!

There's plenty of reasons to love Southwest (LUV), including its AirTran (AAI) deal and rebounding earnings, but YCharts points out that "Southwest is a great company in a crummy industry... and while being smarter than the rest of the class ought to mean that one sets the curve, in airlines and some other industries, it’s hard to rise above the dullards."
Comment! - Wednesday, September 29, 2010, 12:04 PM The "Southwest Effect" - where the discount airline (LUV) moves into a new market and cuts fares to compete - may have to be put on hold in its purchase of AirTran (AAI), which generally prices its fares lower than Southwest. Some costly integration is ahead, and industry consolidation is leading naturally to higher fares, analysts say. Comment!
- Monday, September 27, 2010, 10:10 AM It's a busy morning for airline stocks (ETF: FAA) after Southwest's (LUV +4.6%) announced acquisition of AirTran (AAI +59.1%). Delta (DAL -2%) shares slip on fears the airline will see more of its domestic market chipped away. JetBlue (JBLU +6.1%) rallies on merger speculation and a glowing profile from Barron's. Also: LCC +4.8%, CAL +2.3%, UAUA +2.1%, AMR +1.7%. Comment!

Losers: INFN -6%. Comment! - Monday, September 27, 2010, 7:27 AM Southwest Airlines (LUV) will buy AirTran (AAI) for $1.4B ($7.69/share) in cash and shares - a 69% premium to Friday's close. The purchase opens up Atlanta, the largest domestic market Southwest doesn't already serve, as well as Washington D.C., and allows LUV to boost its presence in key markets like New York and Boston. AAI +65% premarket. LUV -0.7%. (PR) Comment!
- Wednesday, April 21, 2010, 8:20 AM AirTran (AAI): Q1 EPS of -$0.09 beats by $0.04. Revenue of $605.1M (+11.7%) vs. $606.2M. (PR) Comment!
