- Thursday, May 31, 2012, 3:22 AM US Airways (LCC) and TPG Capital may team up to bid for AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK), sources say. Partnering with TPG would give US Airways more financial flexibility with its bid and added credibility. Sources say the talks are not exclusive, and US Airways and TPG are each exploring other options. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 5:26 PM Coverage of Delta (DAL), US Airways (LCC) and United Continental (UAL) is initiated at Imperial Capital at Outperform with respective price targets of $19, $20 and $32. Delta had already reached a 52-week high during the session, sparked by falling oil prices; also a possible factor was American Airlines' (AAMRQ.PK) assertion that it can survive without a merger. 2 Comments [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, May 16, 2012, 10:44 AM Though an AMR (AAMRQ.PK)-US Airways (LCC +3.4%) merger still appears to be on track, the deal won't come without a full slate of labor headaches. With both carriers already contending with vocal minority pilots upset with the way senior pilot unions are running the show, it doesn't appear like two negatives multiplied together will make a positive. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 6:00 AM AMR (AAMRQ.PK) said yesterday it would cut five senior jobs in a restructuring and its lead labor strategist will step down. Combined with previously announced departures, the cuts represent a "20% reduction in the company's most senior leadership positions." Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 25, 2012, 4:58 AM US Airways (LCC) is trying to win backing from more of AMR's (AAMRQ.PK) unsecured creditors for a merger between the carriers, Bloomberg reports. Having last week received support from AMR's three major unions, which serve on its unsecured creditors committee, US needs two more members for a majority. 1 Comment [M&A]
- Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 2:05 PM UBS sees a merger between US Airways (LCC +4.8%) and American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) closer to taking off after union support was nailed down. Analyst Kevin Crissey maintains a Buy rating on LCC, taking the position that if the deal clears the final few hurdles - shares could double in price. 2 Comments [On the Move, Consumer]
- Friday, April 20, 2012, 5:37 PM Cheer up, fliers - a merger of American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) and US Airways (LCC) would result in aggravations as well as some higher fees and costs, but in the end it'll be in your best interest, Scott McCartney writes. One way or another, the U.S. likely will have three big network airlines and some discounters; better to get there by merger than by one of the weak players disappearing altogether. Comment! [M&A, Consumer]
- Friday, April 20, 2012, 10:01 AM US Airways (LCC -3.3%) reaches agreement to merge with American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) after entering into collective bargaining pacts with 3 of American's labor unions, reports CBS. An 8-K filing by US Air this morning states the company has reached agreement with the unions, but the merger is not a done deal. 1 Comment [M&A]
- Thursday, April 19, 2012, 2:20 PM US Airways (LCC +11.1%) spikes higher on a report American Airlines' (AAMRQ.PK) 3 largest unions have agreed to support a takeover bid rather than keep the airline independent. The unions are said to believe they can obtain better terms from US Airways than from an independent, restructured AMR. (previous) 2 Comments [On the Move, M&A]
- Thursday, April 19, 2012, 10:42 AM American Airlines parent AMR (AAMRQ.PK) posted a $1.66B Q1 loss due to $1.4B in one-time items related to its restructuring. Revenue rose 9.2% to $6.04B despite the negative connotations associated with bankruptcy; mainline unit revenue rose 10%. Percentage of seats filled rose to 79% from 77% on flat capacity. Cash cushion rose to $4.8B vs. $4B a year ago. Comment! [Earnings]
- Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 3:32 PM American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) wants to outsource sky caps and gate agents as part of a grand restructuring plan that encompasses laying off 1,200 non-union workers and trim other labor costs dramatically. The last word from CEO Tom Horton on merger chatter is that he wants the carrier to emerge out of bankruptcy as a stand-alone company. 8 Comments [Consumer]

Friday, April 6, 2012, 7:53 AM
When it rains, it twists and hails for American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK), which, along with regional partner American Eagle, is scrapping almost 300 more flights due to the damage that a hailstorm caused to their planes at Dallas Fortworth earlier this week. That will take total cancellations to over 1,900; over 50 jets are still out of service.
1 Comment - Wednesday, April 4, 2012, 9:12 AM Shares of US Airways (LCC) move up 2.5% premarket after the carrier reports March traffic was up 4.5% and steps up its rhetoric over the benefits of a merger with bankrupt American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK). 1 Comment [On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 4, 2012, 4:06 AM US Airways (LCC) has reportedly told some American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) creditors that a merger of the two firms could yield $1.5B in synergies. US Airways is trying to pull together support for a tie-up, but its stepped-up campaign could end up complicating and prolonging American's bankruptcy proceedings. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 4:40 PM The parent of American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) will seek bankruptcy court approval to throw out labor contracts, placing new pressure on pilots, flight attendants and other unionized workers to quickly agree to concessions. AMR CEO Tom Horton tells employees the "best outcome" remains negotiated settlements, and promises to work with unions toward that end. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, March 23, 2012, 5:20 AM US Airways (LCC), which is mulling a bid for AMR (AAMRQ.PK), has received positive feedback from the latter's creditors committee, Bloomberg reports. The committee includes unions, which are yet to reach a new labor deal with AMR, and the carrier plans to next week seek approval to void existing contracts and impose new terms if talks fail. Comment! [M&A, Consumer]
