Company Description
AMR Corporation (AMR or the Company) was incorporated in October 1982. Virtually all of AMR’s operations fall within the airline industry. AMR's principal subsidiary, American Airlines, Inc. (American), was founded in 1934. At the end of 2009, American provided scheduled jet service to... More

- Monday, March 11, 10:16 AM Morgan Stanley advises taking profits on airline stocks (FAA) after the impressive rally in the group with oil prices falling and fares holding. The sector is seeing a bit of a pullback today with United Continental (UAL -2.7%) and Delta Air Lines (DAL -1%) faltering the most, but performance is still strong for the year. 4 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 5, 2:27 PM IATA says passenger air travel rose 2.7% Y/Y in January, a mark which is higher the 2.2% gain in capacity. The agency says a calendar effect may have influenced the total with travel linked to the Chinese New Year falling in the period last year to boost results. International air travel was up 3.7% and domestic air travel rose 1.1% compared to last year. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 5, 7:23 AM US Airways (LCC) and AMR (AAMRQ.PK) announce that they both received a request from the DOJ for further information related to the planned merger between the two carriers. The request is a standard part of the regulatory process. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, February 25, 12:45 PM US Airways (LCC -2.9%) exec Scott Kirby and restructuring specialist Beverly Goulet of American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) have been tapped to lead post-merger planning teams. In addition, the companies will hire an outside merger management to assist the process. The big picture: Analysts have been warning that if the integration process doesn't go smoothly, synergies from the mega-deal will be much harder to realize. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, February 25, 10:23 AM JPMorgan analyst Jamie Baker thinks a recent hike in fares in the airline sector is holding up after two previous attempts earlier this year failed. Airline stocks (FAA +1.5%) are higher on the day with Delta Air Lines (DAL +3.3%) and United Continental (UAL +2.1%) leading the pack. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, February 22, 7:11 AM A hearing on the AMR (AAMRQ.PK)-US Airways (LCC) merger will be heard by a bankruptcy judge on March 27. AMR is expected to file a motion in support of the deal in which some more details on the combination might be revealed. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, February 21, 7:00 AM US Airways (LCC) says the AMR (AAMRQ.PK) corporate name will disappear following the merger between the two companies, a reversal of previous comments from CEO Doug Parker. The companies expect the deal to be completed in Q3, although full system integration will probably take much longer than that. 7 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, February 20, 10:56 AM Spirit Airlines (SAVE +1%) CEO says the mega-merger between American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) and US Airways LCC will stabilize the industry and provide an opportunity for smaller carriers such as Spirit to grow as its fares look more competitive. What he didn't say: In the long run, the wave of airline consolidation could also create a market gap which brings in new low-fare players. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, February 15, 12:13 PM Hedgeye issues some negative comments on the airline sector (AAMRQ.PK, LCC, UAL, DAL, LUV, HA, JBLU, ALK, RJET, ALGT, SAVE): 1) The firm notes that with the merger of U.S. Airways and American Airlines now set, a big catalyst is removed and the path toward actual integration and synergies is still slow. 2) Even if industry consolidation supports a higher fare environment, new low-cost carriers will pop up. 3) Is bigger really better? Several transportation industries have struggled after consolidation instead of thrived. 2 Comments [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, February 14, 6:41 AM American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) and US Airways (LCC) have confirmed that they are to merge. The companies will hold a press conference at Dallas/Fort Airport this morning to discuss the deal. (PR) 1 Comment [Breaking News, Consumer, Top Stories]
- Wednesday, February 13, 7:40 PM The $11B merger between American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) and US Airways (LCC) is on, forming the world's largest airline, according to media reports. 13 Comments [Top Stories, M&A]
- Wednesday, February 13, 7:47 AM Orbitz (OWW) loses a bid to compel American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) to honor an informal agreement over an antitrust lawsuit. The judge on the case ruled that a series of e-mails between Orbitz and American didn't constitute a final agreement. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, February 13, 7:38 AM Antitrust experts see routes which include Washington, Charlotte, and Dallas as potential markets where concessions may need to occur to get AMR (AAMRQ.PK) and US Airways (LCC) to the finish line in their $11B merger. When the deal gets done, the combined airline should see lower unit costs and attractive synergies even with the concessions it gives up. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, February 11, 4:07 AM Travel in blizzard-hit states in the North East is beginning to get back to normal, with just 66 U.S. flights canceled today so far compared with thousands from Friday-Sunday. However, as cities such as New York and Boston clear up, another storm across the Northern Plains was forecast to drop up to a foot of snow. Meanwhile, Hattiesburg and Petal in Mississippi were yesterday hit with a tornado that appeared to be a mile wide. (Flight tracker) Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, February 11, 2:42 AM Although antitrust regulators have become more tough in recent times about not approving major mergers, they are likely to authorize AMR's (AAMRQ.PK) deal with US Airways (LCC), experts reckon. The tie-up involves only around a dozen overlapping routes, which the government hasn't regarded as a problem in the past. And regulators could force the new airline to sell landing slots at airports where its presence would be too big. 2 Comments [M&A, Consumer]
- Sunday, February 10, 4:04 AM US Airways (LCC) and AMR (AAMRQ.PK) have reportedly resolved key differences over valuation and management structure in their merger talks and could announce a deal late in the week. The transaction could value the combined company at $10.5-11B and bring $1B in revenue and cost benefits. US CEO Doug Parker will lead the new firm, which will be branded American Airlines, and AMR's Tom Horton will be non-executive chairman until the spring of 2014. AMR creditors will receive 72% and US investors the rest. 6 Comments [M&A, Top Stories]

losbronces: This is the same ploy used by other U.S. air carriers to lower operating costs. AAMRQ.PK is just the last one to the party.
