- Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 8:10 PM Some of the world's biggest investors boosted their technology holdings during the quarter, according to recent filings. Warren Buffett added to positions in Intel (INTC) and IBM, while George Soros upped his stake in Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO). Other heavyweights such as David Tepper and David Einhorn piled in to Apple (AAPL). One exception was John Paulson who, after a string of heavy losses, liquidated his losing position in Hewlett-Packard (HPQ). 3 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 6:46 PM Tim Cook adds fuel to rising hopes (I, II) for an Apple (AAPL) dividend announcement by stating the company is very actively discussing at the board level what it should do with its giant cash pile (probably over $100B at this point). Cook also hints at the possibility of a future Apple TV, and suggests the iPhone's "halo effect" is boosting iPad sales. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 4:05 PM Jefferies believes Apple (AAPL +0.9%) has the ability to maintain higher margins for longer than the market realizes given its supply chain initiatives. By leveraging its cash flow to fund suppliers' manufacturing, Jefferies says AAPL can potentially mitigate margin pressures by securing lower prices and exploiting its technological edge. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 12:59 PM China's Huawei boasts it sold 20M smartphones in 2011, up 5x from 2010. This figure speaks to the threat posed by Huawei and ZTE (ZTCOY.PK) in the low-end smartphone space, courtesy of cheap Android phones (I, II). Between Apple and Samsung's control of the high-end, and Huawei and ZTE's growing presence on the low-end, the likes of Nokia, HTC, and Motorola Mobility could find themselves in a tough spot. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 11:58 AM The company that registered the “iPad” trademark in China doesn’t just want to keep Apple (AAPL) from selling its device inside China; now it wants to keep Apple from shipping iPads across China’s borders as well. Proview’s request comes a day after officials in one Chinese city confiscated iPads from local resellers, and a week after it filed suit to stop Apple from using the iPad name in China. 10 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 11:15 AM The latest buzz about the iPad 3 or a potential dividend has pushed Apple (AAPL) shares up 24.1% YTD. Jeff Hirsch notes a "fairly repeatable and predictable product announcement and update cycle" in AAPL through the years, so if AAPL's surge succumbs to profit taking, its enormous market cap would burden the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 via its outsized weighting in SPY and QQQ. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]

Once Andrea Jung leaves her job as CEO of Avon (AVP), she'll have to reapply for her roles on the boards of Apple (AAPL) and GE (GE), Businessweek's Diane Brady writes. Jung might even have to forego remaining Chair of Avon as well if the company wants to get a top-notch CEO.
3 Comments - Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 9:29 AM More on the iPad: In-line with earlier rumors, the WSJ claims Apple (AAPL) will offer a 4G LTE version of the iPad 3, and that Verizon (VZ, VOD) and AT&T (T) will be among the companies to sell it. The arrival of a 4G iPad would be a slight positive for baseband chip supplier Qualcomm (QCOM), though the unwillingness of many consumers to pay for an extra data plan has hurt sales of 3G tablets thus far. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 8:36 AM Apple (AAPL) is working with component suppliers in Asia to test a new tablet computer with a smaller screen, WSJ reports. Unnamed officials at some of Apple's suppliers say the company has shown them designs for a new device with a screen size of roughly eight inches, and say it is qualifying suppliers for it. The iPad 2 comes with a 9.7-inch screen. AAPL +0.3% premarket. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 8:17 AM Bespoke steps into the Apple (AAPL) valuation game, saying the company at a market multiple (on a weighted basis) would trade at $573, while at an average market multiple would sell for $752. Valued the same as the entire tech sector - $728, the entire retail sector - $698, Amazon - $3,346. Yesterdays close: $502. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, February 13, 2012, 6:57 PM Microsoft (MSFT), locked in legal battles with BKS and MMI, has agreed to license patents it owns that involve industry standards, rather than use them to block product sales. This isn't a huge concession, since many of Microsoft's software and UI patents aren't covered by standards. Likewise, few, if any, of the patents asserted by Apple (AAPL) in legal disputes relate to industry standards. (also) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, February 13, 2012, 4:36 PM An iPad3 with a higher resolution screen and other upgrades likely will be released next month, but traders say the latest surge in Apple (AAPL +1.9%) shares - which closed above $500 for the first time - stems from the growing consensus that it will declare a dividend or even split shares at the Feb. 23 shareholder meeting. But when investors previously have raised such hopes, they've been left at the altar. 10 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, February 13, 2012, 4:17 PM Apple's (AAPL) latest suits against Samsung (SSNLF.PK) demonstrate "the absurdity of the U.S. patent system," says Henry Blodget, noting the company has received IP protection for the smallest of innovations, including features long supported by web browsers and word processors. Blodget expects the end result of Apple's suits to be nothing more than cash settlements and hefty legal fees for all parties concerned. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, February 13, 2012, 11:28 AM Apple (AAPL), long used to leading customer satisfaction surveys, has finished atop a Harris Interactive survey of corporate reputations. In spite of recent criticism of its contract manufacturers' labor practices, Apple's score 85.62/100 puts it soundly ahead of fellow top-5 finishers Google (GOOG), Coca-Cola (KO), Amazon.com (AMZN), and Kraft (KFT). (earlier) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, February 13, 2012, 9:54 AM Apple (AAPL) shares pass $500 for the first time in its history, rising 1.5% to $500.55. The company's now worth $466.28B, well above Exxon's $398.03B. 9 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Consumer]
- Monday, February 13, 2012, 9:37 AM Retailers in some Chinese cities have been ordered to halt sales of iPads (AAPL), according to media reports. The move follows a lawsuit in which Proview claims it's owned the name for over a decade. Another report has iPads being confiscated from retailers in Shijiazhuang. Apple quivers, +1.8% and over $500/share. 3 Comments [Tech]

Michael Bryant: if you have iPhone, use iTunes, all that, the Apple TV would be good, if you have an android phone then the Google TV would be better. -
