So what it boils down to is that this is likely to be hugely profitable for Apple as the contribution margin is either $299 or $380 each. Just goes to show the value of a brand... Reply

iPhone News Positive - Apple Selling Would Be Indication of Downward Market [view article]
Re: "I think AAPL will dictate the overall sentiment over the next couple of days or even more. If AAPL gets sold on this positive gaga, it won't be because of activation issues. This will send a clear message to the market we are headed towards lower levels."

WHY?! Your thesis certainly doesn't seem to hold in today's market.

Why wouldn't it be considered a case of selling on the news? Quite typical.

Interestingly, in spite of the ATT issue, one expects iPhones to have outsold the "Zune" within a week. Reply

What PARC had, it sat on. Jobs didn't steal it, he put it to work. He knew that it existed and that it would work for the consumer. He then researched, designed, and developed an operating system. Gates, on the other hand, saw what Jobs was doing with it and made a shell for his operating system that would compete with Apple. Jobs stole an undeveloped idea and made it real, Gates stole everything and ruthlessly marketed it. Reply

So in five years Verizon may not be "hands down the best network."

I doubt it. You think VZW is going to standby idle? Sprint is a joke, & focusing on WiMAX, which will not be more cost effective than EVDO with its subsequent revisions. T-Mobile already focuses on Wi-Fi & is late in upgrading to a 3G network. T-Mobile competes on pricing of its voice plan & always will. That's its market. Only AT&T opted for MediaFlo over DVB-H, as MediaFlo operates over separate bandwidth, not impinging upon bandwidth demands imposed upon existing date & voice networks.

Bottom line, you're dreaming, & that's OK. Just dream that the next iPhone is 3G capable, which is likely, but also dream that AT&T's 3G network can handle the bandwidth demand. Other carriers will ultimate off the iPhone or something very similar . . . & offer the capability of downloading music over their networks. AT&T is a long, long, long way from being able to offer that.

iPhone ‘Halo Effect’ Set to Drive Mac Sales Higher [view article]
Great article. I agree with Derek's comment that it would be nice to know the correlation between Alliance members buying habits and that of the general public. But regardless, the changes indicated in the polls are very likely significant. Reply

As PARK pointed out many years ago both Mac and Windows are copies of PARK's windows. In that case Jobs was the first thief, Gates second. Reply

I hate to point out the obvious, but an iPhone is NOT much more expensive than an iPod. You still need a laptop with an iPhone, but you no longer need to carry the iPod and a cell phone. The iPhone doesn't replace your laptop, it just makes it clear what brand you need to buy next time, if you have not yet managed to realize the really obvious fact that Macs are far far better than windows machines.

WIndows is only a bad imitation of Macintosh anyway. That's all it's ever been. That and it used to be cheaper and it used to run more software. Not anymore.

iPhone Mania: Case Study of the Better Mousetrap Principle [view article]
Where have you been? Any windows mobile device is pathethic, just like any version of windoze. Similarly, cell phones are very hard to use, and counterintuitive.

The iPhone is FUN, it's a joy to use. There is no comparison, it's a far better mousetrap.

AT&T needs to get their act together. I do think it was wise of Jobs to partner with a weaker carrier that they could get compliance from and then drive to improve their service. Wise in the "lesser of two evils" way. Yes it would be great if they had Verizon or SprintPCS coverage, but those companies wouldn't allow Apple to be Apple.

So yes, I think AT&T is the weak link and the short-term loser here. However, a year from now they could look very different. Assuming they're smart and aggressive. We'll see.
