- Monday, May 20, 12:34 PM AbbVie (ABBV -1%) says it's initiated a Phase 3 clinical study of diabetic nephropathy with Atrasentan, which is designed to assess the effects of the investigational compound on progression of kidney disease as part of standard of care for patients with stage 2 to 4 chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes. The study will evaluate the drug's impact on renal outcomes, such as the onset of end-stage renal disease, as defined by need for chronic dialysis, transplant or death due to renal failure progression. - Wednesday, May 15, 6:03 PM Third Point discloses new positions in: Anadarko Petroleum (APC), BE Aerospace (BEAV), Cabot Oil (COG), Chimera Investment (CIM), Hess (HES), Hilshire Brands (HSH), Tiffany (TIF), Thermo Fisher (TMO), and Virgin Media (MMED). It raises stakes in: AbbVie (ABBV) and International Paper (IP), and exits Abbott Labs (ABT), Capital One (COF), Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE), Herbalife (HLF), Illumina (ILMN), MetLife (MET), Morgan Stanley (MS) and Tesoro (TSO). - Monday, May 6, 9:35 AM AbbVie (ABBV -0.3%) gets a breakthrough therapy designation from the FDA for its investigational, all-oral, genotype 1 hepatitis C direct-acting antiviral (DAA) combo regimen (with and without ribavirin). Shareholders of Enanta Pharmaceuticals (ENTA -1%) should take note: one of the three DAAs in the combo treatment is the protease inhibitor ABT-450. ENTA is entitled to $195M in regulatory milestone payments on the DAA, as well as additional royalties on any revenue. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, May 2, 2:24 PM The results of Gilead Sciences' (GILD +4.9%) Lonestar study are a significant positive data point for its hepatitis C program, says Leerink Swann's Howard Liang. He notes that the availability 8-week data, especially in more difficult to treat patients, could influence choice of agents. It's main competition at this point is AbbVie (ABBV), which currently doesn't have an 8-week treatment arm, so the shortened duration could be a significant advantage. More details should be available on its earnings call later today at 4:30 EST: (Webcast). Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, April 29, 12:51 PM BMO raises its price target on AbbVie (ABBV -1.2%) to $47 from $43 and reiterates its Market Perform rating following analyst Alex Arfaei's question about Humira's growth and presence in Europe and emerging markets on the earnings call. The company says it "feels good about the dynamics in Europe" and notes it has not "seen any material impact from biosimilar competition in emerging markets." Arfaei says Humira "continues to offset the weakening of [the company's] other franchises" and notes Phizer's CHMP negative opinion "highlights the importance of having an established clinical presence in autoimmune diseases." - Saturday, April 27, 10:53 PM Combining Gilead's (GILD) sofosbuvir and Bristol-Myers Squibb's (BMY) daclatasvir cures 100% of hepatitis C patients in 12 weeks (including those who failed treatment with Vertex's (VRTX) Incivek and Merck's (MRK) Victrelis) and looks to be a better treatment option for those with genotype 3 than a combo of sofosbuvir and another GILD drug ledipasvir. The problem: "GILD very clearly wants to develop in-house," one clinician tells Bloomberg. (See also: ABBV's HCV treatment successful; VRTX teams with BMY on HCV trial) 5 Comments [Healthcare]

- Tuesday, April 23, 12:43 PM Bristol-Myers Squibb's (BMY +1.3%) oral three-drug combo for hepatitis C cured 94% of patients with 12 or 24 weeks of treatment in a Phase II trial. The company now hopes to start Phase III trials by late 2013. Bristol's positive results add to those of AbbVie (ABBV +2.9%), although Gilead (GILD -0.7%) appears to be ahead in the race to market with an oral hepatitis C drug, having already filed an FDA NDA for its sofosbuvir treatment. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, April 23, 7:41 AM AbbVie's (ABBV) five-drug, all oral treatment for hepatitis C wipes the virus out in 88% of patients after eight weeks the company says. Previous results showed the combination treatment rendered the virus undetectable in 99% of those receiving the treatment after 12 weeks. It's a race to market between Abbvie and Gilead Sciences (GILD) for an all oral treatment option capable of supplanting intravenous interferon without affecting cure rates or times. 3 Comments [Healthcare]

Monday, April 22, 1:37 PM
AbbVie (ABBV) +4.6% after Morgan Stanley analyst David Risinger upgrades the stock to "Overweight," citing the company's "under-appreciated pipeline" and other factors. Risinger reckons AbbVie can grab at least 20% of the growing hepatitis C market, and while the analyst maintains his 2013 estimates for the company, he boosts his 2020 EPS forecast to $4.61 from a prior prediction of $2.96.
2 Comments [Healthcare, On the Move, Quick Ideas] - Monday, April 22, 9:16 AM Morgan Stanley upgrades AbbVie (ABBV) to Overweight citing higher estimates for Humira and pipeline sales. The bank's 2015 EPS estimate is 15% higher than the Street consensus. Price target raised to $49 from $36. Shares +0.87% premarket. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, April 17, 6:14 AM AbbVie (ABBV) reportedly intends to lay off hundreds of employee and contract representatives who sell its heart drugs, as the medicines are losing patent protection and face generic rivals. The plans come as AbbVie changes its focus from primary care, such as with cholesterol treatments, to specialty drugs for unmet needs. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, April 10, 1:37 PM Jefferies raises its price targets on big pharma names Pfizer (PFE +2.6%) ($33), Merck (MRK +2.7%) ($48), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ +0.7%) ($85), Eli Lilly (LLY +1.4%) ($44), Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY +0.5%) ($45), AbbVie (ABBV +1.2%) ($50), and Abbot Laboratories (ABT +1.1%) ($42). "We remain positive on pharmaceuticals," Jefferies says, "valuation is attractive for most stocks." 6 Comments [Healthcare]

Derek A. Barrett: Thanks for the info guys! Bret Jensen also did an article on the Street when $CBI was about 10% lower, so looks like a solid pickup. -
