Ambac (ABK) now up 40% as it reports its bond insurance unit nearly tripled its regulatory capital surplus to $856M, holding off delinquency proceedings - for now. "It doesn’t change the endgame for the company, but it pushes it further out into the future," says CreditSights' Rob Haines.

In an overnight filing, Ambac (ABK -11%) discloses the OCI has increased its oversight and is evaluating its ability to pay all claims in its insured portfolio, which could result in it initiating delinquency proceedings against Ambac Assurance to protect policyholders.

Ambac Financial Group (ABK -16%) may see its bond-insurance unit put into receivership, says JPMorgan Chase. The No. 2 bond insurer has yet to give investors an update on its regulatory capital, which was at a surplus of $500M on June 30, but as of Sept. 30 "could very well be in a deficit."
