- Wednesday, March 20, 2:20 PM Stifel goes contrarian on Adobe (ADBE +4.3%), cutting shares to Hold on valuation grounds even as they hit levels last seen in '08 following an FQ1 beat fueled by strong Creative Cloud and Marketing Cloud growth. UBS, on the other hand, has lifted its PT to $46, arguing Adobe's FY13 revenue and Creative Cloud subscription guidance now looks conservative. On the earnings call, management noted mobile now accounts for 25% of Adobe's Digital Marketing transactions, and that sales of enterprise term licenses are bolstering Creative Cloud's growth. Premarket gainers: OMPI +28%. GEVO +17%. CIE +7%. WSM +6%. ADBE +6%. BBRY +5%.
Losers: ECT -9%. CIG -9%. 7 Comments [On the Move] - Tuesday, March 19, 6:03 PM Apple (AAPL) confirms it has hired Adobe (ADBE) CTO Kevin Lynch. He'll be the company's VP of technology, and report to wireless hardware/chip engineering chief Bob Mansfield. There's some speculation Lynch's role in spearheading Adobe's successful cloud software push may have appealed to Apple. Adobe says it won't be hiring a new CTO; Lynch's responsibilities will be doled out to other execs. A source tells AllThingsD Lynch wanted to be Adobe's CEO. (earlier) 6 Comments [Tech]

After-hours top losers: RLJ -3%. CTAS -3%. TDW -2%. GTN -2%. INGR -2%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, March 19, 5:14 PM Adobe (ADBE) CTO Kevin Lynch has resigned, the software vendor discloses in a 8-K filed in the wake of its FQ1 report. CNBC reports Lynch is leaving for Apple (AAPL). He joined Adobe in '05 following the acquisition of Macromedia, and was once a staunch defender of Flash, which Steve Jobs wasn't the biggest fan of. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 19, 4:39 PM A little more on Adobe: Free cash flow was $261.8M, well above net income of $178M. Marketing Cloud (online ad tech) revenue +20% Y/Y to $215M (21% of total). Digital Media revenue -5% Y/Y and digital marketing +1%, both affected by shift to subscriptions. EMEA was soft, -10% Y/Y. Americas -1%, Asia -1%. Opex +16% Y/Y thanks to cloud software investments. Gross margin was 84.4%, -530 bps Y/Y (due to cost of supporting cloud services). Paid Creative Cloud subs have passed 500K this quarter, free/trial users are above 2M. 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings]
- Tuesday, March 19, 4:34 PM More on Adobe: FQ2 guidance is for revenue of $975M-$1.025B and EPS of $0.29-$0.35 vs. consensus of $1.02B and $0.34. FY13 guidance is for revenue of $4.1B and EPS of $1.45 vs. consensus of $4.12B and $1.41. Paid Creative Cloud subs +153K Q/Q to 479K, annual recurring revenue +$80M to $233M. That helped deferred revenue rise 13% Q/Q to $700M. 31% of FQ1 revenue recurring (was 26% in FQ4). ADBE +6% AH to new 52-week highs. CC at 5PM ET (webcast). (PR) (datasheet) (slides/remarks) Comment! - Wednesday, March 13, 6:46 PM In a sign of the times, Adobe (ADBE) is ending boxed sales of its flagship Creative Suite. The product will only now be available via online downloads and (of course) the subscription-based Creative Cloud platform. Much like Microsoft with Office, Adobe has gone out of its way to encourage it Creative Suite base to migrate to cloud subscriptions. FQ1 results arrive on Tuesday. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, March 11, 2:31 PM Google (GOOG) remains persona non grata on Facebook's (FB) FBX ad exchange, which delivers ads to users based on browsing activity. Facebook, which just stepped up its challenge to Google's display ad lead by purchasing Microsoft's Atlas platform, has granted AOL (previous), Adobe (ADBE), and other online ad players access, but DoubleClick Bid Manager, used by dozens of top ad buyers, isn't so lucky. However, AdWeek reports Facebook and Google continue to talk, and the former simply wants to "keep Google from comparing the quality of its inventory" with Facebook's. Comment! [Tech]
- Saturday, March 9, 5:16 PM Tablet Web traffic has eclipsed smartphone Web traffic, says Adobe (ADBE), which is making mobile a big part of its online ad tech push. With tablet growth rates still well above smartphone growth rates, expect this gap to widen. The gap is a mixed blessing for Google (GOOG): with the iPad's share of tablet traffic much higher than the iPhone's share of smartphone traffic, Google's iPad search revenue-sharing payments to Apple are bound to be steep. But tablet ad prices are higher thanks to superior conversion rates, and could soon approach PC levels. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, January 18, 5:58 AM Judge Lucy Koh yesterday ordered Tim Cook to testify in a lawsuit over whether Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG) and other hi-tech companies breached antitrust laws by agreeing not to try to poach each others' employees. Erich Schmidt is also due to appear in the trial, as is Intel's (INTC) Paul Otellini. Lawyers for the five plaintiffs in the case reckon that damages could reach hundreds of millions of dollars. 22 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, December 21, 2012, 12:29 PM Adobe (ADBE -0.3%) paid ~$150M to acquire digital artwork/portfolio-sharing site Behance, a "well-placed source" tells GigaOm. TechCrunch points out Behance also handles the portfolio-sharing features of thousands of other sites, and that the company mentioned in May 20K projects were being added to its site every week. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 5:43 PM Adobe (ADBE) is acquiring Behance, owner of a popular site for discovering and sharing digital artwork. Behance has over 1M members (many of them doubtlessly Adobe buyers), and complements Adobe's fast-growing Creative Cloud, which just received a big update. Like Autodesk, Adobe is trying to make social networking features a big part of its cloud migration efforts. (PR) (more) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
