Market preview: Stock futures drift (S&P -0.1%) ahead of the Fed's 2:15 decision; when it comes out, investors may need some time to parse, meaning the initial market reaction could be a head-fake. ADBE and ORCL are higher after both tech firms beat expectations. Coal companies ANR and WLT slide after disappointing projections. Later: existing home sales.

Roth's Nathan Schneiderman is adding Qlik Technologies (QLIK) to the firm's Focus List. While concerned about Qlik's high European exposure, he believes Oracle (ORCL) and Adobe's (ADBE) results (I, II) bode well for the business intelligence software developer, and claims channel checks are encouraging.

Adobe (ADBE -2.5%) drops after JMP's Patrick Walvarens downgrades shares to Market Perform and trims EPS estimates. Walvarens is concerned about the near-term succes of Adobe's enterprise business, and its ability to retain management and sales personnel. The fact Adobe's shares trade below late-2004 levels probably doesn't help with the latter.

Tech companies large and small continue to struggle with a shortage of qualified technical talent, leading wages to soar in tech hotbeds such as Silicon Valley and Austin. Rising personnel expenses have the potential to eat into the profits of Internet and software giants such as GOOG, YHOO, ORCL, and ADBE.

Adobe (ADBE) has introduced a workaround that allows content based on its Flash technology to appear on iOS devices, by automatically converting it to Apple's (AAPL) preferred HTML5 format. HTML5 is steadily gaining ground on Flash, as iOS web browsing skyrockets, and major developers embrace the technology.

In response to a widespread backlash among video professionals to its Final Cut Pro X software, introduced earlier this year, Apple (AAPL) has quietly restarted sales of its older Final Cut Studio product. Tablets continue their evolution into serious business tools, as Salesforce.com (CRM) unveils a new product allowing its cloud apps to be accessed on touchscreen devices. Like VMware's (VMW) Project AppBlast, Salesforce's product uses HTML5 technology, which Apple (AAPL) strongly supports as an alternative to Adobe's (ADBE) Flash.

UBS' Brent Thill has cut his PT on Adobe (ADBE) to $33 from $40 following a reseller survey. While the survey suggests better-than-expected sales for Adobe's FQ3 (ends this month), it also suggests the company won't get a boost from the recent release of version 5.5 of its flagship Creative Suite platform.

Though shares are near their 52-week low, RBC is downgrading Adobe (ADBE) to Underperform, believing the company's transition to a subscription-based revenue model will cause "near-term volatility." RBC is also concerned about weak consumer and SMB spending, and the impact of upheavals in the media industry. (previously)

Avid Technology (AVID) is down 23.7% after reporting Q2 revenue and EPS of $161.3M (-1% Y/Y) and -$0.10, below a consensus of $170.4M and $0.09. Though some felt the company would gain from Apple's (AAPL) recent missteps, it's apparently not enough to offset Avid's long-term decline relative to Apple and Adobe's (ADBE) cheaper video editing solutions.
