Amazon Strengthens Its Digital Hand With Purchase of Audible [view article]
Well it seems like Amazon may be able to cut a lot of the expenses that Audible has had to incur as a standalone entity. Technology and development had a huge increase in costs. It is interesting that Audible stated in its last 10-K that it did not have a comprehensive backup system/plan. I would bet if Amazon is too aggressive with its plans for Audible, that Apple would start seeing if it could strike separate deals with the publishers and prop up an alternate digital publisher. I am a little surprised that Adobe is not in this spoke-word business. Reply

It is a cheap $300M real option on a platform expansion agenda, probably a good move for AMZN and a long time coming.......

Not so sure this is negative. Amazon gets the best distribution for audiobooks on other platforms, and positions itself for the creation of its own audiobooks. Reply

Amazon's stock should take a hit for this. If Amazon was confident that it could maintain its market share in media as the market moves to digital downloads, it wouldn't need to do this acquisition. But it realizes that the shift to digital will result in a hit to its media market share. So it's just paid $300MM to stay in the game. And that's probably only a first move. Reply

Apple, Amazon Take Note: Free Music Downloads Are Coming [view article]
They've given up on DRM? Man, you really didn't do your homework. Qtrax music IS DRM-protected. You also can't burn playlists to CD, like you can with iTunes. Seems that the labels aren't giving up so easily. Reply

"I won’t use the word “fraud” until this all sorts itself out and I’ve had a chance to talk directly to the company"

And you think it's OK to put all this under the title "Free Music Downloads Are Coming"?

The company did issue press releases after years of hype - so everyone reported this. They may just have released inaccurate info. Can't blame this author for that - at least he updates his post, unlike the MSM reports. Reply

Great, so I have free backgound music for my dinner party, the steak is excellent and then... on comes an advertisement for a vaginal thrush ointment?

I don't think so.

Doesn't anyone think anything through these days?

Five Reasons To Buy Audible, The Online Book Provider [view article]
Interesting:

Podcasters Unite to Figure Out a Role for Ads

...Advertising, the other potential revenue source for producers and publishers, does not work when marketers have no way of tracking how many times their advertisements are being heard or swapping out old advertisements once they have run their course.

Industry executives say they have closed in on a solution in recent months, which means that consumers may have a much wider array of free audio (and video) content coming to them, if they can stand a little advertising to go along with it.

The effort is a multifront initiative, starting with improvements in technology. Companies have begun distributing media files that stay connected to publishers, giving them a way to track the number of times that advertisements have been heard or viewed, or replace old advertisements.

At the same time, about 15 companies, including Apple and NPR, announced last week the formation of a new industry group, the Association for Downloadable Media, that will help executives improve methods for creating, distributing and tracking advertisements in podcasts...

No Growth In Digital Music Sales? [view article]
I've noticed CD's now are packed with more songs than before. Also, the quality of the songs are better as well. In some case, if you add the number of songs together, it's cheaper to buy the CD than downloading each song. Reply

No Growth In Digital Music Sales? [view article]
I believe in the last conference call Apple claimed that there was some seasonality in the 3rd quarter sales in that there were

1) comparatively fewer new releases in July/August/September

2) possibly some impact from school being out for most of the quarter (although over time I personally think that that might go the other way)

I also don't recall any "must have" music being out this summer. But I'm the wrong person to ask about that. ;-)
