- Friday, April 26, 3:13 PM Agnico-Eagle (AEM -5.7%) is pushing to start production at its La India project in Mexico, despite the uncertainty which has prompted rivals to clamp down on spending and shelve new developments, as CEO Sean Boyd believes gold's price drop is an overreaction. But La India is marginal, and with AEM's big Meliadine mine in Canada’s far north not expected until 2018, it's not clear where future growth will come. 1 Comment [Commodities, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 16, 11:58 AM Analysts at RBC Capital think credit downgrades for some top gold miners are a strong possibility. There's a “moderate probability” Barrick Gold (ABX -0.1%) could trigger a one-notch downgrade at $1,400 gold; at $1,300, Newmont Mining (NEM +1.9%) could get downgraded, and Kinross Gold (KGC +1.8%) could get cut right to junk status. TD Securities also offers similarly disturbing conclusions. (also) 5 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Friday, April 12, 2:27 PM Goldman's short call on gold looks prescient, as comex gold sinks $63.50 to settle at $1,501.40/oz. for its lowest close since July 2011. Traders and analysts see no obvious trigger for the selloff, which seems to reflect the malaise that has gripped the market. Silver slips $1.37 to $26.33/oz. Miners are huge losers: HMY -7.5%, ABX -7.3%, AEM -6.9%, AUY -6.2%, SLW -5.6%, NEM -5.2%, EGO -4.9%, GFI -4.8%, GG -4.5%. 38 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 3, 10:25 AM Gold Fields (GFI -1.9%) says employees at its Tarkwa and Damang mines in Ghana have embarked on illegal strikes that have halted production at both mines. GFI says it is analyzing and investigating the miners' demands but appeals to employees to maintain law and order. Most big miners are up in early trading: AEM +0.9%, AUY +0.8%, NEM +0.5%, GG +0.2%. (also) Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 6, 3:49 PM Does the surge in gold mining stocks mean the bottom is in? Gold futures finish flat after a two-day climb, but the big story in recent sessions hasn't been the physical gold as much as the miners. The mining ETF (GDX +3.9%) is surging nearly 4% today, but that's after a ~20% YTD selloff. Today, miners are broadly higher: RGLD +4.5%, AEM +4.3%, ABX +3.9%, KGC +3.8%, GG +4.1%, NEM +3.3%. 20 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, February 25, 11:58 AM Eldorado Gold (EGO +4.6%) is upgraded to Outperform from Sector Perform at CIBC, which says gold producers with superior growth prospects, below-average production costs and strong balance sheets will outperform their peers. The believes EGO satisfies all three criteria. Gold stocks are also benefiting from higher gold prices today: ABX +2%, NEM +1.2%, GG +1.5%, AUY +2.2%, AEM +2.5%. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 5:38 PM Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM) provides an update of its 2012 exploration programs: Indicated resources at Meliadine's Wesmeg and Normeg zones in Canada increased by ~40% to more than 5.5M metric tons, new positive results at depth are revealed in Rimpi Zone at Kittila in Finland, and progress is seen at La India and Tarachi in Mexico. AEM -2.7% AH. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 5:22 PM More on Agnico-Eagle Mines' (AEM) Q3 results: Increases full-year production guidance to ~1.025M oz. of gold from previous 975K, based on the strong performance YTD, especially at Meadowbank. Lowers expected total cash costs to ~$660/oz. from $690. Expects to produce ~990K oz. of gold in 2013, unchanged from prior forecasts. Shares +1.8% AH. Comment! [Commodities, Earnings, On the Move]

Overall gold output rose 10.8% as new production at Meadowbank outweighed the loss of output from its Goldex mine. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 11:15 AM The GDX slides 1.7% following Goldcorp's (GG -8.5%) cut in production guidance. Other miners: Yamana (AUY -1.5%, Kincross (KGC -0.9%, Agnico-Eagle (AEM -0.7%), Newmont (NEM -1%). 3 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 28, 2012, 2:41 PM Comex gold declined $28, or 1.8%, to settle at $1,550.40/oz. as the European summit begins with little hope of progress and a higher dollar keeps gold and other commodities under pressure. Also, decreased physical demand from countries such as India is hurting demand for gold. Miners take a beating: GG -5.1%, AUY -3.1%, KGC -6.2%, AEM -4.6%, NGD -3.1%. 2 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 26, 2012, 3:59 PM Barrick Gold's (ABX -3.3%) announcement of a new CFO who jumped ship from Agnico Eagle (AEM -3.6%) isn't helping shares today, as miners felt the impact of Comex gold falling nearly 1% as part of negative overall sentiment for commodities. GG -1.1%, KGC -1.5%, IAG -1.6%, AUQ -2%, NG -3.7%. 2 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 7, 2012, 12:52 PM Investors who have enjoyed the sanctuary of gold mining stocks (GDX -3.7%) recently are feeling the pain today, after Bernanke's testimony failed to deliver on hopes for QE3: ABX -4.7%, GG -3.2%, NEM -2.2%, AU -3.4%, GFI -3%, KGC -7%, AUY -2.4%, AEM -3.2%, IAG -4.1%, NGD -3.5%. (earlier) 3 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 10:59 AM In an apparent reversal of strategy, Agnico-Eagle (AEM -1.3%) Mines is pulling capital out of Ontario’s Red Lake gold camp. Rubicon Minerals (RBY -7.3%), a junior miner in Red Lake, says AEM has sold off a "significant portion" of its RBY shares, which would explain why 17M-plus RBY shares changed hands on Friday. 7 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 12:05 PM Gold adds to earlier gains, +2.7% at $1578.60 and bouncing off 10-month lows on technical buying and as shorts get squeezed. Big miners rally on heavy volume: NEM +6.1%, ABX +6.4%, GG +7.9%, KGC +7.5%, IAG +6.4%, AEM +6.1%, AUQ +10.8%. Smaller miners jump too: MUX +14.7%, BAA +13.7%, PVG +11.1%, AZK +10.6%. 5 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]

Marc Courtenay: You might want to stay out of AEM's way and replace it with GG or IAG, which are better buys on pullbacks. I also like AXU below $7.50.
