- Friday, May 31, 12:37 PM Fickle teenagers strike again: After teen-oriented retailers Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF +1.8%), Aeropostale (ARO +1.3%), and American Eagle Outfitters (AEO +2.1%) all posted disappointing results amid slumping same-store sales for the first part of the year, the question of the day in the sub-sector is what exactly do teens like? Though Urban Outfitter (URBN +1.6%), privately-held Forever 21, Vera Bradley (VRA -0.6%), and Lululemon (LULU +0.7%) all scored well in surveys and analyst polling - it was Nike (NKE +0.6%) that rated as the demographic's strongest preference. It's not a bad trend for Dick's Sporting Good (DKS +0.7%) either with 17% of the sporting good giant's sales tied to the swoosh. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 31, 8:45 AM A below par reading on personal spending for April was affected by lower gas prices and home heating bills and isn't a biting indictment on retail spending (AEO, ANF, ARO, BBBY, BBY, BJ, CHS, COH, COST, DG, DLTR, GPS, HD, JCP, JWN, KSS, LOW, LTD, M, NDN, NKE, ODP, PIR, PLCE, RSH, SKS, SPLS, TGT, TJX, URBN, WMT, WSM, ZLC), according to economists. Auto sales also cooled off just a bit in April which had an impact. So far, retail trends have been largely favorable in May as the height of the spring selling season shifted a few weeks later. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 30, 4:52 PM American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) declares $0.125/share quarterly dividend, 14% increase from prior dividend of $0.11. Forward yield 2.53% For shareholders of record July 1.Payable July 12.Ex-div date June 27. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Thursday, May 30, 7:15 AM A number of retailers are setting up shop in Mexico to test the waters with stand-alone stores amid an alluring decline in tariffs in the nation. The aspirational aspect of young Mexican consumers bodes well for Gap (GPS), American Eagle Outfitters (AEO), Hennes & Mauritz (HMRZF.PK), and Forever 21 - but the influx of new retailers has cut into sales for the local arm of Wal-Mart (WMT). 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 22, 1:43 PM Google just released a new tool under Google Trends to rank the highest search terms per category. Though it's not quite actionable advice quite yet, a lot of scientific abstracts have been making a solid case that in some industries a correlation between Google searches and stock prices exists. The trick is separating negative searches from positive ones. The most searched fashion brands on Google: 1) Forever 21 2) American Eagle Outfitters (AEO +2.3%) 3) Hennes & Mauritz (HMRZF.PK) 4) Tiffany (TIF +0.2%) 5) Hollister (ANF +1.2%). 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 22, 8:10 AM More on American Eagle (AEO): Comparable-store sales fell 5% as they ran up against a tough comparable from last year when warmer weather lines were introduced earlier. Profit was helped by favorable products costs and sourcing efficiencies, but the retailer noted a higher rate of markdowns during the period. For Q2, flat comparable-store sales and EPS of $0.19-$0.21 are forecast. AEO -1.5% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Wednesday, May 22, 8:03 AM American Eagle (AEO): Q1 EPS of $0.18 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $679M (-4% Y/Y) beats by $0.59M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Tuesday, May 7, 9:29 AM Retail sales numbers for April could be a tad weaker than expected after weekly reports from Redbook and ICSC-Goldman on chain store sales both came in a bit below expectations. Retail read-through: Weather and swings in gas prices seemed to impact store traffic to malls (KSS, DDS, JCP, LTD, GPS, ANF, AEO) and supercenters (WMT, COST TGT), but economists think consumer confidence on the high end (TIF, RL, SKS, COH, BBBY) just might be on the rise. Also, with online sales de-emphasized in the weekly chain store reports - Internet whiz kids Macy's (M) and Urban Outfitters (URBN) could still outperform even if mall parking lots aren't packed. 1 Comment [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Monday, April 22, 11:33 AM It smells like teen spending, according to data from a Piper Jaffray survey. Improvements in both current fashion spending by teenagers and an intention to spend more in the future cuts across income levels and genders. If the spending upturn pans out, it's good news for the sector. Teen-focused: Aeropostale (ARO -2.8%), Rue 21 (RUE -2.1%), Zumiez (ZUMZ -1.8%), Wet Seal (WTSLA -2.6%), Vera Bradley (VRA -0.9%), Body Central (BODY -1.5%), Buckle (BKE -1.7%), American Eagle Outfitter (AEO -0.2%), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF -1.2%), Express (EXPR -1.8%). - Thursday, April 11, 9:24 AM Topeka Capital initiates coverage on American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) with a Buy rating and $25 price target. The firm thinks initiatives to improve sales and margins will accelerate this year. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 2, 12:19 PM Barclays initiates coverage on a number of major retailers, lining up Limited Brands (LTD +2.1%), American Eagle Outfitters (AEO +2.9%), and Gap (GPS +1.5%) with Overweight ratings. The investment firm is less sure about Fossil (FOSL +0.8%), Finish Line (FINL +1.1%), and Aeropostale (ARO +0.1%) - all rated as Equal Weight - while Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF -0.2%) looks unappealing and is tagged at Underweight. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, April 1, 2:40 PM Analysts think the colder March weather this year could hurt retailers that sell clothing to kids and teenagers as family shopping takes a backseat. Though the spring selling season could still pick up steam in April despite the slow start, retailers such as American Eagle (AEO -1.4%), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF +0.1%), Gap (GPS -0.8%), Aeropostale (ARO -3.2%), and Children's Place (PLCE +0.1%) that depend on mall traffic have a lot of ground to make up. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 26, 11:56 AM A weaker-than-anticipated reading on national chain store sales for the first three weeks of the month is enough to rattle the shares of a number of mall-based retailers. Though retail execs are pointing to the weather, trend-watchers are seeing a different story (chart). Decliners: ZUMZ -3.5%, AEO -2.5%, GPS -2.8%, LTD -1.5%, CHS -2.8%, ANN -2.3%, FRAN -2.5%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 19, 12:32 PM Teen-oriented retailers trade weak with negative news out on Lululemon and Kohl's tipping sentiment in the sub-sector. Decliners: American Eagle Outfitters (AEO -2.9%), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF -3.3%), Aeropostale (AEO -2.9%), Zumiez (ZUMZ -2.7%), The Bucke (BKE -2%), Urban Outfitters (URBN -2%). 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
