Retail's one of the few sectors under pressure early on, after retailers posted same-store sales that often failed to match Wall Street expectations (table). Of those reporting, 12 came in below consensus, 13 exceeded projections, and two were in line. Big losers: Aeropostale (ARO -16%), American Eagle (AEO -11%). Big gainers: Children's Place (PLCE +8%), Bon-Ton (BONT +7%), Wet Seal (WTSLA +6%).

Lazard's Todd Slater cuts ratings on retail, apparel and footwear, saying the sector "will need to show revenue growth to drive double-digit earnings growth and justify the next leg up." Saks (SKS -2.6%) was cut to sell. Reduced to hold from buy: American Eagle Outfitters (AEO), Jones Apparel Group (JNY), Guess (GES), Warnaco (WRC).
