- Friday, April 8, 2011, 10:52 AM More are shot and killed in Yemen as President Saleh angrily nixes a GCC-brokered deal which would have had him step down in return for a guarantee of immunity. "We reject this belligerent intervention," Saleh tells a crowd of supporters. 2 Comments [Global & FX]
- Friday, April 8, 2011, 9:48 AM With "Friday of Steadfastness," protests taking place across Syria, several are dead in Deraa as security force snipers fire from rooftops. Assad's offer of nationality to some ethnic Kurds appears to have only stirred the pot even more, the Kurds angrily responding that their fight is for democracy. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Thursday, April 7, 2011, 2:28 PM Opposition leaders have given the nod to a proposal by the Gulf Cooperation Council for Yemeni President Saleh to step down and be given immunity from prosecution. However, earlier reports that Saleh would travel to Riyadh to hammer out the details are now being questioned. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, April 6, 2011, 5:25 PM "The Middle East is printing money and it’s used to operating in chaos ... regime changes are just a fact of life," says Colony Capital's Thomas Barrack, succinctly summing up the case for investing in MENA. Every $1 increase in the oil price brings $9B more to the region. Comment! [Global & FX]

Wednesday, April 6, 2011, 2:32 PM
Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, worried about a chaotic government collapse in Yemen, have joined in trying to have President Saleh step down to be replaced by a tribunal of leaders representing various sects. Saleh indicates he will participate in talks in Riyadh. No word has been heard from opposition leaders.
1 Comment [Global & FX] - Wednesday, April 6, 2011, 7:39 AM The head of the rebel army blames inadequate NATO support as his troops retreat from the oil port of Brega. Combined with Tobruk - where the rebels are set to make their first oil sale - holding the town of Brega would give the rebels strong control of oil in the East. May crude is up a bit at $108.21. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, April 5, 2011, 4:35 PM Possibly the next MENA country to get familiar with, Oman launches arrests ahead of planned demonstrations on Friday. In power for 30 years, Sultan Qaboos has been trying to quell unrest by doling out cash and jobs. The country is a relatively minor producer of oil. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, April 5, 2011, 8:08 AM More violence in the Yemeni city of Taiz as security forces again fire on protesters one day after killing at least ten. With counter-terrorism operations ground to a halt, the U.S. now sees President Saleh as a liability rather than ally in the fight against al-Qaeda. "He needs to step aside," says an unnamed U.S. official. 3 Comments [Global & FX]
- Monday, April 4, 2011, 5:42 PM Rejecting a supposed cease-fire proposal from its former ally, Italy becomes the latest country to formally recognize the Libyan opposition. "These proposals are not credible," says Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, noting Gaddafi has violated past truces. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Monday, April 4, 2011, 5:04 PM The new U.S. policy that President Saleh must leave office has not eased tensions in Yemen, where at least 10 die after security forces open fire in the midst of tens of thousands of demonstrators. "The protesters have a plan of escalation," says a government official, claiming soldiers only fired into the air. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Monday, April 4, 2011, 8:36 AM In a shift, the Obama administration is now working to have Yemen President Saleh removed from office. More worried about al Qaeda filling a vacuum than Saleh's massacre of protesters, the U.S. has been slow to turn on its ally in the war on terror. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
- Friday, April 1, 2011, 12:14 PM Dubbed "A Day of Martyrs," tens of thousands take to the streets in protests across Syria. For the first time, ethnic Kurds, which make up 15% of Syria's population, join the demonstrations. Various reports show several people killed in Duma after security forces open fire. 6 Comments [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 30, 2011, 11:15 AM Frequently interrupted by applause from likely terrified legislators, Bashar Assad, in his first public comments since protests started, gives no indication he will give in to demands that Syria's 48 year old emergency law be lifted. 3 Comments [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 30, 2011, 10:07 AM The coastal oil town of Ras Launuf changes hands again as the Libyan rebels retreat from the city under heavy attack from Gadaffi's forces. Though the UN resolution does not call for it, providing arms to the rebels (and possibly al Qaeda) has not been ruled out according to U.K. PM Cameron. 4 Comments [Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 30, 2011, 9:43 AM Following the breakdown of talks to step down from power, Yemeni President Saleh offers to stay in office, but hand authority to a caretaker government until elections can be held. The main opposition group has not responded, but the younger protesters look to be going nowhere until Saleh is gone. 2 Comments [Global & FX]
- Monday, March 28, 2011, 10:37 AM Bahrain's military crackdown wins the day against at least the more moderate of the opposition groups. Al Wefaq drops many of its preconditions for engaging in talks with the government, now just wanting the military off the streets and a few "political" prisoners released. 1 Comment [Global & FX]
