- Monday, June 3, 7:53 PM Aflac (AFL) prices $700M worth of 10-year fixed-rate, senior notes with a coupon of 3.625%. Shares -0.8% AH. Comment! [Financials]
- Wednesday, May 29, 1:54 PM "Higher interest rates and a steeper yield curve are the first items on all insurance company CEO's Christmas lists," writes Scott Barlow in a piece titled, "How the U.S. Treasury market determines Manulife's (MFC +1.6%) stock price." It's eye on the Bloomberg, Credit Suisse ups price targets on MetLife (MET +2.3%), Hartford (HIG +1%), Aflac (AFL +1%), Ameriprise (AMP -0.3%), and Principal (PFG +1%). Others benefitting from a steeper curve: LNC and SLF. 1 Comment [Financials]
- Friday, May 10, 11:11 AM A basket of 27 stocks drawing at least 10% of their revenue from Japan is up 11% YTD, 600 bps shy of the median gain for a S&P 500 stock, according to Goldman, doing the study as the yen devaluation continues. Insurers make up 3 of the 5 deriving the largest portion of revenue from Japan, with Aflac (AFL) a big underperformer, but Hartford (HIG) and Prudential (PRU) beating S&P gains. 1 Comment [Financials]
- Friday, April 26, 8:52 AM Aflac (AFL) is upgraded to Buy with price target hiked to $65 from $63 at Sterne Agee. The stock gained 2% yesterday following Wednesday night's earnings beat and management indicating it is ready to step up the pace of share repurchases. Comment! [Financials]
- Thursday, April 25, 11:30 AM Aflac (AFL +2.6%) moves sharply higher after Q1 earnings beat estimates and management hints it will accelerate the pace of buybacks (3M shares purchased in Q1 leaves 19.4M authorization remaining). The company expects U.S. sales - which declined in Q1 - to bounce back and retains previous guidance of flat-to-5% sales increase for the year. Management also suggests discomfort with JGBs at such low yields and plans to "be flexible" in terms of asset allocation. (PR) Comment! [Financials, Earnings, On the Move]

- Friday, April 5, 2:56 PM A moderate late-session bounce in the S&P isn't helping many in the insurance sector stuck near the day's lows. Of particular interest is Aflac (AFL -4.1%) as the yen slides and the JGB market encountered a brutal selloff last night. The company presumably has significant exposure to both, but also presumably is hedged? PRU -3.4%, HIG -3.2%, LNC -2.4%. 3 Comments [Financials, On the Move]

- Tuesday, January 15, 9:55 AM Aflac (AFL -1.3%) is downgraded to Hold at Sterne Agee, which says the big weakening in the yen will have a negative impact on profits. Sterne also sees downside risks to profit margins in Japan. Wait for a better buying opportunity, say the analysts. Comment! [Financials]
- Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 3:01 PM Aflac (AFL) is rated a "Buy of the Week" by AAII's Charles Rotblut, who says negative sentiment due to fears about exposure to Europe are overblown (shares have gained 32% in 6 months - give my portfolio some of that negative sentiment). The stock trades at 8.6X earnings vs. the industry median of 10.3X. Comment! [Financials, Quick Ideas]

Micah: Looks the stock has very large and sudden fits of irrational behavior too which presents more buying opportunity over the long haul -
Micah: I say irrational because the actual business operations improve during these sudden drops in the stock ('08-'09 correction)

I have equal positions in $AFL and PM, which would you add to over the next 3-6 months? leaning towards $AFL but $PM in 30 yrs will be $$ - View all 3 replies

Stephen J Melnykevich: Exactly what I was leaning towards. What is your fair value of AFL at current fundamentals? Mine is bt $70-80 based on 2012/2013 earnings. -
Energysystems: $AFL is undervalued, even at these levels. $PM is trading relatively rich to it's historical PE average. I'm long $AFL and drip it.

Aflac Incorporated (the Parent Company) was incorporated in 1973 under the laws of the state of Georgia. Aflac Incorporated is a general business holding company and acts as a management company, overseeing the operations of its subsidiaries by providing management services and making capital available. Its principal business is supplemental health and life insurance, which is marketed and administered through its subsidiary, American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus (Aflac), which operates in the United States (Aflac U.S.) and as a branch in Japan (Aflac Japan). Additionally, Aflac U.S. markets and administers group products through Continental American Insurance Company (CAIC). Most of Aflac’s policies are individually underwritten and marketed through independent agents. Our insurance operations in the United States and our branch in Japan service the two markets for our insurance business.
During 2009, the Parent Company purchased Continental American Insurance Group, Inc., which includes its wholly-owned subsidiary, CAIC. CAIC, headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina, equips Aflac U.S. with a platform for offering attractive voluntary group insurance products that are well-suited for distribution by insurance brokers at the worksite.
We believe Aflac is the world’s leading underwriter of individually issued policies marketed at worksites. We continue to diversify our product offerings in both Japan and the United States. Aflac Japan sells supplemental insurance products, including cancer plans, general medical indemnity plans, medical/sickness riders, care plans, living benefit life plans, ordinary life insurance plans and annuities. Aflac U.S. sells supplemental insurance products, including accident/disability plans, cancer plans, short-term disability plans, sickness and hospital indemnity plans, hospital intensive care plans, fixed-benefit dental plans, vision care plans, long-term care plans, and life insurance products.
We are authorized to conduct insurance business in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, several U.S. territories and Japan. Aflac Japan’s revenues, including realized gains and losses on its investment portfolio, accounted for 73% of the Company’s total revenues in 2009, 72% in 2008 and 71% in 2007. The percentage of the Company’s total assets attributable to Aflac Japan was 85% at December 31, 2009, and 87% at December 31, 2008.
Employees
As of December 31, 2009, Aflac Japan had 3,946 employees and Aflac U.S. had 4,111 employees. We consider our employee relations to be excellent.
Other Operations
Our other operations include the Parent Company and a printing subsidiary. These operations had 292 employees as of December 31, 2009. We consider our relations with these employees to be excellent. For additional information on our other operations, see the Other Operations section of MD&A.
