- Monday, December 17, 2012, 3:35 PM AIG prices the sale of its remaining 1.65B shares of AIA Group at HK$29.65 to HK$30.65. The mid-point of that range would be a 4.6% discount to what the stock was last trading at (AIA was halted in HK last night before the open). The pink sheet version (AAGIY.PK) is off 3.1%. AIG - with another $6.5B maybe to put towards buybacks - is up 2.6%. (PR) Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
- Sunday, December 16, 2012, 10:53 PM Looking to raise maybe another $6.5B in cash, AIG has put on offer the rest of its stake (13.7%) in AIA Group. Hank Greenberg used to call AIA the crown jewel of AIG, but today's shareholders - adding the $6.5B to the $4.23B from the ILFC sale - will no doubt be excited about the stock repurchase possibilities. 14 Comments [Financials]
- Friday, December 14, 2012, 11:21 AM With the wiring of about $7.6B to the Treasury, the government is officially relieved of the rest of its AIG stake. 19 months ago, Treasury owned more than 1.6B shares, 92% of the total. (AIG's PR) 3 Comments [Financials, Breaking News]
- Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 8:31 AM "Management can now devote 100% of its attention to driving returns," writes Sterne Agee of AIG following Treasury's exit. Rating the stock a Buy, the team hopes in the near future to see a dividend, details on cutting expenses, and a change to management-incentive programs to realign them with shareholder interests. Shares +0.8% premarket. 5 Comments [Financials, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 7:41 AM Last night's sale of AIG stock by the Treasury was oversubscribed says Bernstein, as "long-term investors took advantage of one last chance to buy the stock at a discount from the government." With no remaining overhang and many underweight the name, AIG is finally ready to break out of its $25-$35 range. Shares +1.8% premarket to $33.96, well above the Treasury's $32.50 sale price. 2 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 7:31 AM "Thank you America," says AIG CEO Bob Benmosche in the company reaction to the Treasury's sale of the rest of its stock. "Let's bring on tomorrow." Treasury will continue to hold 2.7M warrants on AIG stock - if they're priced anything like the TARP warrants, the sale of these may provide a tasty opportunity for investors. AIG shares now +1.2% premarket at $33.77, well above the Treasury's $32.50 sale price. 8 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 7:08 AM The Treasury officially sells its remaining 234M shares of AIG at $32.50 each. Total proceeds to the government will be about $7.6B. With the sale, the combined gain to the Fed and Treasury rises to $22.7B - $5B for Treasury, $17.7B for the Fed. AIG -0.5% premarket to $33.20. (PR) 31 Comments [Financials, Breaking News]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 5:15 PM More on the AIG offering: One trader reminds of September's Treasury sale which more than doubled the size of this one. That offering priced at $32.50 and AIG's stock quickly rose from that level, moving past $35 a few days later. However, AIG bought about $5B of the previous sale, and doesn't look like it's buying any of this one. The $4.23B in cash from the ILFC divestiture would help, but that deal won't close for weeks. Shares -1.4% AH. 1 Comment [Financials]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 4:43 PM The Treasury announces an offering for its remaining stake in AIG. The government currently holds a 16% stake in the company - 234M shares - and will continue to hold some warrants following the sale. Shares -0.8% AH. 10 Comments [Financials, Breaking News]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 10:47 AM AIG's agreement to sell ILFC to a group of Chinese businesses will, of course, have to past muster with the Committee on Foreign Investment (CIFUS), which will vet the deal for security concerns. The deal could be terminated if it is not consummated by May 15. Comment! [M&A, Financials, Global & FX]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 9:53 AM AIG slides 2% in early trade following confirmation of a deal to sell its plane-leasing business. The ratings agencies are no doubt pleased about the unloading of the leveraged operation, but stockholders might feel differently about selling ILFC for about two-thirds of book value. There's also Friday evening's announcement of $1.3B in Sandy-related losses, likely higher than expected. Comment! [Financials]
- Sunday, December 9, 2012, 8:31 PM AIG agrees to the sale of an 80.1% stake in its plane-leasing unit - ILFC - for $4.23B, valuing the entire business at $5.28B, a bit less than the $5.5B bandied about on Friday. The good news: AIG's continued refocus on core operations, and the raising of cash to buy back shares. The bad news: The sale price is about two-thirds of ILFC's book value, and certainly less than what AIG had hoped it might fetch when it began talking about an IPO many moons ago. (PR) 20 Comments [Financials, M&A]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 4:51 PM AIG estimates after-tax losses from Sandy - net of reinsurance - will total about $1.3B, and the company will inject $1B into its U.S. property casualty operations to cover them (total holding company equity is $102.4B). Losses will be reflected in Q4 results. Shares -1.8% AH. (Travelers and Allstate estimates previously) (PR) 1 Comment [Financials]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 10:18 AM More on the AIG talks on ILFC: An official announcement of the sale of the unit to a consortium of Chinese firms could come early next week, reports Reuters, citing a source close to the situation. AIG +3.1%. 1 Comment [Financials, M&A, On the Move]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 9:44 AM AIG gains 2.5% on news it may sell ILFC in a deal valuing the aircraft leasing unit at $5.5B. It may be less than what the company could fetch in an IPO, but then again, maybe not. In any case, it frees up more cash to repurchase stock at well below book value. Merrill Lynch likes what it hears, and reiterates the shares a Buy. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 5:07 AM AIG (AIG) is reportedly in negotiations to sell a controlling stake in its aircraft-leasing unit, International Lease Finance, to a group that includes New China Trust, China Aviation Industry Fund, and Industrial & Commercial Bank of China. A deal could value ILFC, which AIG has said it wants to take to IPO, at $5.5B. 4 Comments [Financials, M&A]

NaveenB: Unless it can get above it's 20 day EMA and then goes to 47, then maybe we'll have our squeeze.
