    The structure of the government's new deal to backstop AIG (AIG) is actually quite clever, NY Times' Andrew Ross Sorkin writes - because it allows AIG to stay in business, while setting it up for a much-needed breakup down the road. The bad news: Geithner should have pressed for 100% ownership.

    Former AIG (AIG) chief Hank Greenberg sues AIG, saying "material misrepresentations and omissions" caused him to buy more shares at an "artificially inflated price" and to pay extra taxes. Greenberg says the sale of AIG's insurance units to repay the government was "a tragedy."

    From Treasury's statement on today's AIG (AIG) bailout restructuring: "The long-term solution for the company... is the orderly restructuring and refocusing of the firm. This will take time and possibly further government support, if markets do not stabilize and improve."

    Even as it negotiated with the government over the revised terms of its bailout, AIG (AIG) sued the U.S. on Friday over a disputed $306M in taxes, interest and penalties.

    AIG (AIG) posts an even worse-than-expected Q4 loss of $61.7B, or $22.95 per diluted share. Net loss for the full year was $99.3B, or $37.84B per diluted share. (PR)

    AIG's (AIG) board to vote today on a deal with the government that would ease the terms of its bailout, give a further $30B equity commitment, and lower interest rates on its $60B credit line. In exchange, Fed would get stakes in AIA and Alico. Announcement could come with quarterly results Monday.
