Earlier today, the CDN owner announced a partnership with top Swiss carrier Swisscom. Swisscom will act as a reseller and integrator of Akamai's CDN, app acceleration, and cloud security services in its home country. Comment! [Tech]
Monday, March 11, 12:55 PM Akamai (AKAM -4.3%) reaffirms its Q1 revenue, EBITDA margin, and "normalized" EPS guidance as today's annual investor summit gets rolling (webcast). The CDN leader also says it will now classify certain expenses previously included in its sales/marketing line as part of its cost of revenue (thus impacting gross margin), and will begin accounting for the tax impact of various non-GAAP expenses when calculating net income. Friday, February 22, 1:20 PM A 33% bandwidth price cut from Rackspace (RAX -2.1%) for cloud infrastructure and CDN services is hurting CDN leader Akamai (AKAM -2.1%) and data center colocation/interconnection firms Equinix (EQIX -1.1%) and InterXion (INXN -2.2%). Rackspace's cuts, which also include volume discounts for storage, are eye-opening in light of past remarks about competing against Amazon (AMZN -0.5%) and other cloud rivals in ways other than price. Akamai has long been trying to stand out from rivals by focusing on higher-margin services in areas such as cloud apps, e-commerce, security, and ad delivery, and new CEO Tom Leighton made it clear in the earnings call he wants to double down, both by giving up on low-margin deals and ramping sales/R&D investments.
