Meanwhile, Equinix (EQIX) -2.2% AH in response to Rackspace's revenue miss and soft hosting services data. A Bloomberg column earlier today discussed Akamai's growing security service ambitions. Though security made up less than 2% of Akamai's 2012 sales, the company has big hopes for a recently-launched service called Kona Site Defender that leverages Akamai's giant content delivery network to stop DDoS and other hacking attacks Comment! - Wednesday, March 20, 12:34 PM FBN launches coverage on a slew of enterprise/cloud software and Web hosting/CDN service plays. Akamai (AKAM +1.9%), Equinix (EQIX +0.6%), VMware (VMW +1.3%), Citrix (CTXS +1.3%), Salesforce (CRM +0.7%), and NetSuite (N +1.7%) have been started at Outperform, while Rackspace (RAX +2.6%), Workday (WDAY), and Concur (CNQR -1.3%) have been started at Sector Perform. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, March 14, 4:42 PM Akamai (AKAM) CEO Tom Leighton has bought 30K shares on top of the 50K he purchased last month. AKAM +1.4% AH. Earlier today, the CDN owner announced a partnership with top Swiss carrier Swisscom. Swisscom will act as a reseller and integrator of Akamai's CDN, app acceleration, and cloud security services in its home country. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, March 11, 12:55 PM Akamai (AKAM -4.3%) reaffirms its Q1 revenue, EBITDA margin, and "normalized" EPS guidance as today's annual investor summit gets rolling (webcast). The CDN leader also says it will now classify certain expenses previously included in its sales/marketing line as part of its cost of revenue (thus impacting gross margin), and will begin accounting for the tax impact of various non-GAAP expenses when calculating net income. Akamai expects the latter change will lower Q1 non-GAAP EPS by $0.05, but won't affect normalized EPS. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, February 25, 11:43 AM The recent selloff in Akamai (AKAM +2%) has made its risk-reward compelling, argues Macquarie, which is lifting shares to Outerpform. Akamai is doing just that as a result, after having slumped on Friday on news of Rackspace's CDN bandwidth price cut. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 22, 1:20 PM A 33% bandwidth price cut from Rackspace (RAX -2.1%) for cloud infrastructure and CDN services is hurting CDN leader Akamai (AKAM -2.1%) and data center colocation/interconnection firms Equinix (EQIX -1.1%) and InterXion (INXN -2.2%). Rackspace's cuts, which also include volume discounts for storage, are eye-opening in light of past remarks about competing against Amazon (AMZN -0.5%) and other cloud rivals in ways other than price. Rackspace's move follows major cuts (I, II) from Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, and a Q4 miss that featured slowing server growth. (Barron's) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, February 11, 1:35 PM New Akamai (AKAM -0.3%) CEO Tom Leighton bought 50K shares on Friday at $35.31, increasing the size of his position to 3.1M. The purchase happened after Akamai was crushed on Thursday due to a Q4 revenue miss and light top-line guidance - partly the result of Leighton's decision to abandon some low-margin media delivery contracts. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, February 7, 1:38 PM Akamai (AKAM -15.6%) may have lost CDN video customers to Level 3 (LVLT) due to price competition, thinks Oppenheimer after the company partly blamed its light Q1 guidance on a decision to abandon low-margin media contracts. Akamai has long been trying to stand out from rivals by focusing on higher-margin services in areas such as cloud apps, e-commerce, security, and ad delivery, and new CEO Tom Leighton made it clear in the earnings call he wants to double down, both by giving up on low-margin deals and ramping sales/R&D investments. LLNW -5%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
