- Tuesday, January 29, 3:59 PM U.S. Steel (X -2%) and AK Steel (AKS -1.8%) (I, II) continue to contend with oversupply in the U.S. industry, pressuring steel prices, but both companies expect results to improve in the current quarter as the global economy improves. "Recent increases in our daily order entry rates suggest increased spot market demand as the quarter progresses," U.S. Steel says, also seeing lower coal costs for 2013. Comment! [On the Move] - Monday, January 28, 8:57 AM AK Steel (AKS) -3.6% premarket after Goldman Sachs downgrades shares to Sell from Neutral with a $3 price target, down from $3.50. The firm believes the recent rise in the stock price is unwarranted given its view of continuing weak flat steel prices, a highly leveraged balance sheet, high pension funding requirements, high capex to fund its raw material strategy, and no sign of turnaround in its electrical steel business. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 2, 8:22 AM U.S. Steel (X) +3.9% premarket after shares are upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Credit Suisse, which believes the U.S. steel sector is poised to rebound on the fiscal cliff resolution, attractive fundamentals and upside risk to China. Recent checks support improving U.S. demand, disciplined supply and low inventories, which support higher steel prices. Also: CLF +4.6%, AKS +4.5%, NUE +1.3%. Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, December 14, 2012, 2:15 PM Steel stocks show solid gains following positive China PMI data; the steel sector often is the most responsive industry to Chinese PMI data. AKS +6.7%, X +6.4%, STLD +5.1%, CMC +3.4%, MT +3.2%, NUE +3%, CMC +2.8%, RS +2.6%, SCHN +2.4%. - Monday, December 3, 2012, 3:59 PM AK Steel (AKS -3%) says it prevailed on a key claim in a patent infringement lawsuit brought against the company by ArcelorMittal (MT). AKS claims the court decision will allow it to continue to offer its product for sale in the U.S. regardless of the outcome of the new trial on the validity of the patent. A favorite of short sellers, AKS shares tumble anyway. 1 Comment [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 10:53 AM Also providing a spark behind the move in AK Steel (AKS +3%) is Chairman and CEO James Wainscott's purchase yesterday of 100K shares at $3.845 each. Wainscott now owns ~684K AKS shares. (also) Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 9:46 AM AK Steel (AKS +1.5%) is upgraded to Hold from Sell at Dahlman Rose, which believes the implications of recent debt and equity issues have been priced in and near-term liquidity risk has been removed. Though the firm remains neutral on the steel sector, it favors service centers on a relative basis. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 8:24 AM Goldman Sachs raises its rating on AK Steel (AKS) to Neutral from Sell as it downgrades rival steel producer Cliffs Natural Resources to Sell. The firm believes AKS's balance sheet concerns have diminished with last week's capital raise and sees no further company-specific negative catalysts on the horizon. Shares have shed 34% in the past week. AKS +2.2% premarket. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 3:31 PM Credit Suisse thinks that U.S. steel sector valuations are already pricing in "fiscal cliff" uncertainty, and thinks there's a trading opportunity in the sector over the next 3-6 months as demand and pricing improve. The firm reiterates an Outperform on: Reliance Steel (RS +3%), Metals USA (MUSA +0.5%), Nucor (NUE +2.6%), and AK Steel (AKS +2.8%). Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 3:12 PM AK Steel (AKS +2.2%) shares are on the move despite negative comments from Jefferies, which lowers its AKS price target to $3.50 from $5. Though bankruptcy risk was reduced by its capital raise, AKS remains a shaky investment thanks to continued cost disadvantages relative to peers, challenging conditions in its markets, and risks associated with its greenfield projects. Comment! [Commodities, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 9:35 AM AK Steel (AKS -6.2%) sinks at the open amid pending stock and bond sales (I, II, III) that include boosting the amount of stock outstanding by more than 20%. Wells Fargo analysts, however, note the sales will give AKS ~$1.2B of liquidity, “adequate enough to ride out a choppy macro and fund forays into iron-ore/coal mining to improve the cost structure.” Comment! Capitalist Bull: Too late to short AKS at this level. It's been on the list for quite some time. -
madav1138: That's what I thought, I bought AKS recently, the projected growth into 2015 is quite a good case to buy in low.

AKS is likely a bankruptcy candidate. Paying over 50% of free cash flow for retirement benefits. Steel dumping on top of that -- death knell - View all 9 replies
-
David White: Luckydad: These things take time to develop. However, it appears virtually certain that AKS will at some point have to go into bankruptcy -
David White: in order to renegotiate its pension benefits. They are too much of a strain on the company. The steel business isn't good either.

$8 appears to be solid support on $AKS. Break above $8.2 will likely lead to another run at the 200ema around $10. - View all 2 replies
