- Wednesday, June 5, 11:42 AM Allegiant Travel (ALGT +0.2%) continues to use the simple strategy of flying to where its rivals don't to claim the highest profit margins in the airliner industry. The carrier doesn't spend much on advertising, and opts not to partner with other airlines, but has seen solid success in upselling customers to additional services all the way up to $41.20 per flier last year. Shares of ALGT reflect the success management has has with its indy spirit, up 31.2% YTD. Comment! [Consumer]
- Sunday, April 28, 2:57 AM Air traffic control operations are set to return to normal by this evening after the FAA ended the staff furloughs that had caused the delay of thousands of flights since coming into effect last Sunday. The FAA's move follows Congress' passing of legislation that allowed the agency to redirect up to $253M of its airport improvement budget to fund staffing and operations. 18 Comments [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Friday, April 26, 12:27 PM The squeaky wheel gets the grease as the U.S. House votes to approve a bill to end the furlough of FAA employees. Those that bought airline stocks (FAA) on Monday when overwrought reports of long delays at U.S. airports rattled the sector made a good call. 3 Comments [Consumer, On the Move, U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, April 24, 7:12 PM Allegiant Travel (ALGT): Q1 EPS of $1.65 beats by $0.2. Revenue of $273M beats by $7.08M. Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Tuesday, April 2, 10:50 AM Airline stocks (FAA) take a turn lower after Delta Air Lines (DAL -6.7%) issues a disappointing report on March traffic. The carrier blamed the sequester and some temporary tech issues for a loss in late bookings, but investors don't seem to buying the excuses. As the first carrier to report March numbers, what Delta says carries some weight. Decliners: LCC -5.3%, ALK -4.6%, UAL -4.4%, LUV -3.7%, JBLU -3.2%, ALGT -1.7%. 6 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, April 1, 12:38 PM Airline stocks (FAA) trade are blowing off some steam with regional carriers Republic Airways (RJET -9.8%), Allegiant (ALGT -3%), and Spirit Airlines (SAVE -3.2%) leading the slide. Macroeconomic concerns and a harsh downgrade from Evercore Partners on United Continental (UAL -2.5%) seem to be tipping sentiment. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Saturday, March 30, 9:51 AM Airlines around the world have gone to great lengths in recent years to reduce the weight they carry, with an eye to decreasing fuel requirements and increasing profit. So if weight is such a key concern for airlines' operations, why not charge for overweight passengers as well as overweight baggage? At least one economist thinks it's a great idea. 24 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, February 21, 11:34 AM UBS cuts its estimates on Allegiant Travel (ALGT -0.1%) due to higher fuel costs, but keeps a Buy rating on the carrier's strong growth opportunities and adds $10 to its price target on shares to take it to $90. The firm sees FY13 EPS of $5.72, down from $4.88, and FY14 goes to $6.60 from $6.81. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, February 15, 12:13 PM Hedgeye issues some negative comments on the airline sector (AAMRQ.PK, LCC, UAL, DAL, LUV, HA, JBLU, ALK, RJET, ALGT, SAVE): 1) The firm notes that with the merger of U.S. Airways and American Airlines now set, a big catalyst is removed and the path toward actual integration and synergies is still slow. 2) Even if industry consolidation supports a higher fare environment, new low-cost carriers will pop up. 3) Is bigger really better? Several transportation industries have struggled after consolidation instead of thrived. 2 Comments [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, January 30, 5:42 PM Allegiant Travel (ALGT): Q4 EPS of $0.76 beats by $0.04. Revenue of $222.8M (+15% Y/Y). (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Thursday, January 17, 8:18 AM Flying high? Barclays is out with a positive note on the airline sector, saying stocks could rise 20% on a mix of higher fares and lower jet fuel prices. Investors should also keep an eye on the merger front. With all signs pointing to an eventual marriage between American Airlines and US Airways, future industry consolidation/partnerships could still be on tap. A particular focus will be on Washington DC to see if rules governing foreign ownership of U.S. carriers are relaxed. Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 2:34 PM The IATA's forecast for 2012 airline industry profits lit a charge under stocks in the sector for the day, but the group also sees clear skies ahead in 2013. Fuel prices should fall lower and passenger demand will increase by 4.5%, according to IATA estimates. Things are even rosier for North American carriers, with profits expected to jump 42% Y/Y to $3.4B. In the big picture, the targeted capacity cuts at airlines may finally stay to pay dividends. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 9:51 AM Airline stocks trade higher after IATA raises its profit forecast for the sector. The trade group says it expects airlines to hit a profit level of $6.7B this year, up from a prior estimate of $4.1B. The lift is due to "improving efficiency and restructuring," says IATA director-general Tony Tyler. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, November 12, 2012, 8:54 AM U.S. airlines face the most serious shortage of pilots in over forty years, according to the WSJ. New federal mandates and a wave of pilots about to hit retirement age are setting up to create a "crisis" in the industry with no quick-fix solution in place, warns insiders. Look for regional carriers to feel the sharpest sting if the pilot shortage develops in short order. 4 Comments [Consumer]
