Monday, April 15, 9:45 AM Altera (ALTR) is buying AppliedMicro's (AMCC) Danish TPACK unit, a developer of Altera-based FPGAs for optical networking applications, for an undisclosed sum. Altera claims TPACK's chips have displaced ASSPs in applications that include 100G hardware (a key growth market), and will complement its existing optical offerings. Telecom & wireless made up 44% of Altera's Q4 sales, and (as always) the company remains in pitched battle here with archrival Xilinx (XLNX). AppliedMicro bought TPACK for $32M-$37M in 2010. Tuesday, March 19, 10:50 AM Lattice Semi (LSCC +7.5%) jumps after guiding for 6%-8% Q/Q revenue growth in Q1, well above prior guidance for a 2%-4% drop. Gross margin is expected to be at the low end of a prior guidance range of 52%-56% thanks to a greater mix of telecom and consumer chip sales. Bigger rivals Altera (ALTR +0.4%) and Xilinx (XLNX +1.5%) are up slightly. This morning, Xilinx introduced a new chip for its Zynq line of SoCs. Wednesday, March 6, 5:38 PM Xilinx's (XLNX) analyst day yielded favorable sell-side commentary. William Blair is a fan of Xilinx's light opex guidance, 60%+ share of 28nm FPGA sales, high base station design win rate, and the success of its 3D FPGAs and fully-programmable Zynq SoCs. Looking at the big picture, Raymond James sees plenty of room for the ~$6B FPGA market to take share from a ~$50B ASIC/ASSP market, as R&D/manufacturing costs for ASICs continue to grow. Tuesday, February 26, 10:56 AM Intel's (INTC +2.7%) foundry deal with Altera (ALTR +1.7%) is enough to get Drexel Hamilton to upgrade "Chipzilla" to Hold, with a $22 PT. Meanwhile, existing Altera foundry partner TSMC (TSM -2.4%) is now adding to yesterday's losses. RBC thinks Intel, which has a manufacturing process edge against independent foundries, could win more clients at TSMC's expense. Monday, February 25, 5:02 PM Intel (INTC) has bagged Altera (ALTR) as a chip foundry client. Altera, which has a near-duopoly on the FPGA market in tandem with Xilinx (XLNX), has hired Intel to make FPGAs using the latter's next-gen 14nm manufacturing process and 3D transistor tech. Altera says it will still rely on its existing foundry partner, TSMC (TSM), to make 20nm and older-process chips. The deal comes a month after reports Intel had struck a foundry deal with Cisco. Friday, January 18, 1:23 PM Though it soundly missed FQ3 revenue estimates (while slightly beating on EPS), Xilinx (XLNX +1.5%) is trading higher and is within range of its 52-week high. Expectations were low following Altera's (ALTR -0.3%) warning, and investors could be pleased with a healthy gross margin of 66.6% (up 110 bps Q/Q). The FPGA vendor guided for FQ4 revenue of $520M-$540M, below a $544.2M consensus. Sales for the Industrial, Aerospace & Defense segment rose 7% Q/Q in FQ3, but all other segments were lower.
