Tuesday, June 18, 11:35 AM AMD's first ARM-based server CPU, codenamed Seattle, will enter production in 2H14, the chipmaker announces. Seattle CPUs will feature 8 or 16 of ARM's (ARMH) high-end Cortex-A57 cores, with each running at 2GHz. or more. AMD claims the chips will "offer 3-4x the performance" of its new Opteron X-Series parts, and will integrate 10G Ethernet links and SeaMicro's Freedom Fabric tech. Seattle, aimed at the budding microserver market, will face competition from fellow ARM licensees AppliedMicro (AMCC +6.5% - appears to be rallying on the news), Marvell (MRVL), and startup Calxeda, and also Intel's Atom CPUs. Friday, June 7, 9:33 AM Topeka launches coverage on the chip sector. NXP (NXPI -1.5%), Broadcom (BRCM +1.3%), Amkor (AMKR +0.5%), Freescale (FSL -0.5%), and Rambus (RMBS +0.5%) have been started at Buy, and ARM (ARMH -2.1%), Qualcomm (QCOM -2%), Applied Micro (AMCC +0.3%), and Mellanox (MLNX +1.9%) have been started at Hold. Mellanox isn't exactly a chip stock, though the company does use internally-developed ASICs in its adapter cards and switches. Monday, April 15, 9:45 AM Altera (ALTR) is buying AppliedMicro's (AMCC) Danish TPACK unit, a developer of Altera-based FPGAs for optical networking applications, for an undisclosed sum. Altera claims TPACK's chips have displaced ASSPs in applications that include 100G hardware (a key growth market), and will complement its existing optical offerings. Telecom & wireless made up 44% of Altera's Q4 sales, and (as always) the company remains in pitched battle here with archrival Xilinx (XLNX). AppliedMicro bought TPACK for $32M-$37M in 2010. Friday, April 12, 2:33 PM H-P (HPQ) Moonshot servers featuring AMD's low-power Kyoto CPU will arrive in 2H13. H-P praises AMD's GPU expertise, which it thinks makes Kyoto well-suited for video/graphics-centric tasks. Also arriving in 2H are servers using Intel's (INTC) next-gen Avoton Atom CPUs - the first Moonshot systems use Centerton Atom CPUs. Meanwhile, ARM-based CPUs will be provided by Texas Instruments (TXN - PR), AppliedMicro (AMCC - PR), and Calxeda - H-P talks up the inclusion of a DSP in TI's Keystone ARM processor. 3 Comments [Tech]
Monday, March 25, 1:01 PM Apple (AAPL) "will introduce the first 64-bit ARM-based chip this year," writes Evercore's Patrick Wang. Wang doesn't state which Apple products the chip will go into, but does note the adoption of 64-bit parts will lift ARM's (ARMH +3.4%) royalty rates. He also sees a 2H ramp in chips using ARM's big.LITTLE architecture boosting rates, and talks up the potential of ARM server CPUs from Applied Micro (AMCC -1.5%) and Cavium (CAVM -0.5%) - Wang sees AMCC's X-Gene CPU cementing its early lead in the market. Saturday, February 9, 4:48 PM The market for micro servers - cheap, densely-packed, low-power servers most often used for Web/cloud services - will grow from just 88K units in 2012 to 1.2M in 2016 (10% of server shipments), predicts IHS. ARM-based (ARMH) chips could power much of this gear - NVDA, MRVL, AMCC, AMD, and others are busy developing ARM server CPUs. Wednesday, January 16, 1:57 PM Facebook has provided a big endorsement for ARM (ARMH) server CPUs: the company is showing off a next-gen server architecture for its Open Compute platform for building cheap/dense/power-efficient IT infrastructures that allows companies to switch between various x86 and ARM CPUs by swapping boards. Applied Micro (AMCC +0.9%) and Calxeda are the first ARM vendors to support it. The architecture will also support Intel's (INTC) silicon photonics tech, using it to handle 100G Ethernet links. Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 12:25 PM Opinions on Intel's (INTC) S1200 Atom server CPUs are split between those who praise their head start on ARM-based alternatives, and those who worry the chips won't be competitive with future ARM products. Wells Fargo argues the S1200 gives Intel a 1-2 year lead over 64-bit ARM solutions. But Oppenheimer calls the dual-core parts "completely disadvantaged." "In the new web-tier landscape, the more cores, the better," it asserts. Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 4:27 PM Intel (INTC) has officially launched its S1200 (Centerton) Atom server CPU line: it's hoping the dual-core, 6W chips can head off the threats posed by ARM (ARMH) server CPUs and AMD's SeaMicro unit, and address the needs of Web companies deploying hundreds of thousands of cheap, dense, energy-efficient servers. At $54 apiece, the chips are far cheaper than most of Intel's Xeon server CPUs - GigaOm notes Intel is dealing with an innovator's dilemma. Moreover, AMCC's history as a telecom chipmaker has helped it develop interconnects and switch fabric chips to connect its CPUs, and a slew of value-added features. It hopes to commence sales by Q413 or Q114.
