- Friday, April 12, 2:33 PM H-P (HPQ) Moonshot servers featuring AMD's low-power Kyoto CPU will arrive in 2H13. H-P praises AMD's GPU expertise, which it thinks makes Kyoto well-suited for video/graphics-centric tasks. Also arriving in 2H are servers using Intel's (INTC) next-gen Avoton Atom CPUs - the first Moonshot systems use Centerton Atom CPUs. Meanwhile, ARM-based CPUs will be provided by Texas Instruments (TXN - PR), AppliedMicro (AMCC - PR), and Calxeda - H-P talks up the inclusion of a DSP in TI's Keystone ARM processor. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, April 11, 8:24 AM In addition to the fall in Microsoft's shares, companies exposed to the PC market drop further after IDC said yesterday that global computer shipments slid 13.9% in Q1. H-P HPQ -5.2%, Lenovo (LNVGY.PK) -5.8% in Hong Kong, Intel (INTC) -2.3%, AMD -2.7%, Nvidia (NVDA) -2.1%, Seagate (STX) -1.85%, Western Digital (WDC) -1.3%. - Wednesday, April 10, 4:43 PM Global PC shipments fell 13.9% Y/Y in Q1 to 76.9M units, per IDC. That surpasses Q4's 6.4% drop and Q3's 8.6% decline, and is steep even in light of IDC's recent commentary. IDC: "It seems clear that the Windows 8 (MSFT) launch not only didn’t provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market." H-P (HPQ) was the market's leader, but its share fell 200 bps Y/Y to 15.7%. #2 Lenovo (LNVGY.PK) saw its share rise 210 bps to 15.3%, and #3 Dell's rose 40 bps to 11.8%. Apple's (AAPL) U.S. share rose 60 bps to 10%, though U.S. Mac shipments fell 7.5% to 1.4M. 33 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 8, 2:20 PM AMD (AMD +4.8%) rallies after Bloomberg becomes the 8th or 9th source (give or take a few) to report the next-gen Xbox will use an AMD system-on-chip (SoC). In-line with prior reports, sources tell the news service the SoC will feature AMD Jaguar CPU cores to go with a GPU. A January spec leak suggests the use of 8 Jaguar cores clocked at 1.6 GHz, and an 800 MHz. GPU. The PS4 will also use an AMD SoC containing an 8-core Jaguar CPU. The Verge recently reported the next Xbox will be unveiled on May 21. 6 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, April 8, 11:58 AM H-P (HPQ -0.9%) unveils its first Moonshot system, the fruits of a much-hyped effort to develop the kind of densely-packed, low-power systems many Web/cloud service providers have embraced. The first Moonshot server uses Intel's (INTC) S1200 (Centerton) Atom CPU. 45 of them fit into a small enclosure containing shared power/networking/storage components, and H-P claims 1,800 servers can fit into a rack. AMD and ARM-based (ARMH) servers will arrive later. The likes of Google, Facebook, and Amazon probably won't adopt Moonshot, but some enterprises and service providers hoping to emulate those firms might. 13 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 1, 11:42 AM Chip stocks underperform (SOXX -1.5%) after the SIA reports industry sales fell 8.9% M/M and 3.8% Y/Y in February. Bernstein points out the M/M drop is much worse than a 3.4% historical average. Microprocessor sales are estimated to have fallen 14% M/M, but the fact Intel (INTC -2%) and AMD (AMD -1.2%) no longer provide data to the SIA affects the reliability of that number. Memory sales (inc. DRAM and NAND) grew thanks to both higher bit shipments and prices. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 27, 2:29 PM AMD (AMD) counters Nvidia's (NVDA) GRID server-based graphics platform by launching Sky, a server graphics card line that also enables remote access to GPU resources for gaming. Unlike Nvidia, AMD isn't offering its own servers (it's leaving that to OEMs) and hasn't yet discussed enterprise applications. SemiAccurate likes AMD's aggressive pricing for Sky. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, March 25, 1:29 PM Checks point to "stable and more robust" trends for Intel's (INTC -0.7%) Romley Xeon server CPUs, says Evercore's Patrick Wang in a note that also strikes a positive tone on ARM server CPUs. Wang writes Romley demand appears strong among both cloud and enterprise buyers, and reports hearing AMD (AMD -1.4%) has cut Opteron server CPU prices "in order to keep up" with Intel. Analog chipmaker Volterra (VLTR -1.1%) is seen as a beneficiary of strong Romley demand. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, March 21, 12:09 PM Citi's Glen Yeung has joined the Intel (INTC -0.6%) estimate-cutting parade. Echoing IDC, Yeung says "checks suggest Chinese New Year [PC] sell through was poor, pointing to weakness in other geographies." He adds Haswell desktop CPUs will launch in April, and notebook parts in June; demand for Ivy Bridge Parts is expected to slump heading into the launch. Q1 and Q2 estimates have been lowered below consensus. Yeung also cut estimates prior to Intel's Q4 report. (Piper's cuts) 7 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, March 18, 2:46 PM Like clockwork, IDC's PC shipment forecasts keep falling while its tablet forecasts keep rising. Following weak February Chinese sales, the research firm thinks global Q1 shipments could see a double-digit Y/Y drop, worse than a prior forecast for a 7.7% decline. It also thinks Q2 shipments could see a mid-single-digit drop ahead of a possible 2H recovery (made easier by favorable Y/Y comps). Two weeks ago, IDC forecast full-year shipments would drop 1.3%, which itself was worse than a prior outlook for a 2.8% increase. 13 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, March 18, 12:31 PM The Street isn't appreciating the value of AMD's (AMD +2.5%) game console ops, argues Macquarie's Shawn Webster while upgrading shares to Outperform. Backing out Macquarie's console chip sales forecast from the Street's AMD estimates implies a consensus of flat growth for AMD's core businesses in Q3 and a 5% drop in Q4 - Webster considers those forecasts too bearish. AMD CPUs and GPUs having been designed into the PlayStation 4 and (from all indications) the Xbox 720. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, March 14, 10:41 AM Sell-side commentary on PCs remains gloomy. Longbow's supply-chain contacts think desktop shipments will fall 5%-10% this year, worse than the 4% drop the firm predicts for Intel's (INTC) desktop business. It expects a slow Haswell ramp as high inventories and soft demand lead OEMs to stick with Ivy Bridge. It also sees integrated graphics taking more share from AMD and Nvidia's (NVDA) GPUs. Nomura notes Windows 8 (MSFT) demand remains muted, but holds out hope for a 2H pickup thanks to pricing, battery life, form factor, and app ecosystem improvements. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 12, 11:18 AM AMD makes the long-expected sale/lease-back of its Austin campus official. AMD, which is entering into a 12-year lease for the facility, expects to receive proceeds of $164M, and record a charge of $50M related to the difference between the sale price and the property's carrying value. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 5, 1:53 PM PC industry forecasts continue to head lower: IDC sees industry shipments falling 1.3% this year to 345.8M. That's below a prior forecast for a 2.8% increase, and a 2013, and comes in the wake of a 3.7% drop in 2012. Shipments to "mature markets" are seen falling 4%, while emerging market are expected to eke out 0.6% growth - that mix shift benefits Lenovo (LNVGY.PK) and Asus, and hurts H-P (HPQ) and Dell (DELL). For the record, IDC expects tablet shipments to hit 172.4M in 2013. Comment! [Tech]

Phatality: Agreed there's too much, people should see it more as a "fairly" guaranteed source of revenue for AMD for the next cycle while they innovate

Vegas Ben: controllers will be generic and usable on any console, hardware will become generic, so games can be played with any popular hardware, etc. -
Phatality: We're already there, and AMD makes the chipsets for all established platforms. Disagree on handhelds replacing consoles, they augment at best
