- Wednesday, December 26, 2012, 11:10 AM IDC sees global chip sales rising 4.9% in 2013 to $319B, a forecast that's nearly even with Gartner's 4.5%. However, the computing segment is expected to grow a mere 1.7%, as the PC industry's woes continue pressuring sales. The consumer segment is expected to grow a healthier 9.8%, as the tablet boom offsets slumping demand for consoles, DVD players, and other hardware. The communications segment is seen growing 6.5%, buoyed by surging 4G chip sales. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 24, 2012, 3:02 PM "If people used to buy PCs every four years and are now buying them every five years, that could lower PC sales by 20 percent over time," says Bernstein's Tony Sacconaghi, quoted in an NYT column discussing the lukewarm reception for Windows 8, which arrived as tablets were already pushing out replacement PC purchases. NPD believes U.S. retail Windows PC sales fell 13% Y/Y from the time of the Win. 8 launch to the first week of December, though that's better than a late-November estimate. 12 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 11:21 AM AMD (AMD -4.2%) is slumping, and Intel (INTC -0.5%) and Nvidia (NVDA -0.6%) are slightly off, after Evercore's Patrick Wang joins the estimate-cutting parade, and co-worker Rob Cihra offers mixed commentary about PC demand. While holding out hope Windows 8 and China will lead demand to stabilize in 1H, Cihra notes many industry suppliers appear to have under-shipped end-user sales (which themselves aren't great) in Q4 thanks to inventory drawdowns. "Early ultrabooks have been stymied by high prices and Win8 so far looks like a remarkable non-factor.," he adds. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, December 17, 2012, 5:15 PM Digitimes provides another gloomy tidbit for PC component suppliers, stating most PC-focused Taiwanese chipmakers are expected to see a 10% M/M December sales drop on top of a similar drop for November. Both weak PC demand and OEM inventory liquidations are said to be culprits - analysts have already raised alarm bells about the inventory problems faced by Intel (INTC) and others. Last month, the site noted contract manufacturers are pressuring component vendors to lower prices. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 5:06 PM Intel's (INTC) first batch of Haswell desktop CPUs will include 14 chips, according to a leaked table. All but one of them will be quad-core parts, and the cores will feature speeds ranging from 2.7GHZ.-3.5GHZ. Interestingly (especially in light of Intel's promotion of Haswell's power savings), the max power draw for the most powerful chips has risen to 84W from the 77W claimed by high-end Ivy Bridge desktop CPUs. With AMD stumbling and downsizing, Intel doesn't need to pull off any miracles with Haswell to maintain its CPU dominance. (previous) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 4:27 PM Intel (INTC) has officially launched its S1200 (Centerton) Atom server CPU line: it's hoping the dual-core, 6W chips can head off the threats posed by ARM (ARMH) server CPUs and AMD's SeaMicro unit, and address the needs of Web companies deploying hundreds of thousands of cheap, dense, energy-efficient servers. At $54 apiece, the chips are far cheaper than most of Intel's Xeon server CPUs - GigaOm notes Intel is dealing with an innovator's dilemma. Analyst Charles King argues Intel has a 12-month head start on ARM, but Oppenheimer isn't impressed. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 7:04 PM More on Intel: Miller Tabak has become the latest in a line of firms to slash estimates on Intel and provide negative industry commentary along the way. The sales of Taiwanese contract manufacturers appear to have fallen 5% M/M in November, MT claims, even though November is seasonally strong. It now expects an 8% Y/Y sales drop for Q4, and argues Intel faces a "double headwind" of weak PC sales and excess inventory. Shares are still rated Neutral on account of Intel's valuation and dividend (4.5% yield). (previous: I, II) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 7:14 PM AppliedMicro (AMCC -2.8%) thinks its ARM server CPUs have a 12-18 month lead on rivals, notes Williams Financial. Moreover, AMCC's history as a telecom chipmaker has helped it develop interconnects and switch fabric chips to connect its CPUs, and a slew of value-added features. It hopes to commence sales by Q413 or Q114. Marvell and AMD are also going after the ARM server CPU market (I, II), expected to grow quickly thanks to demand from Internet companies and others looking to make their hardware as dense and power-efficient as possible. (Intel Centerton) 4 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 5:00 PM AMD +1.3% AH after announcing it has amended its chip wafer purchase deal with Globalfoundries to reflect its slumping volumes. AMD says it will now buy $115M worth of wafers from its former chip foundry spinoff in Q4 and $1.15B in 2013, and will make a $320M termination payment related to the move. AMD will also cut its payments to Globalfoundries for certain R&D expenses. The chipmaker says these moves will help it return to positive free cash flow in 2H13. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 11:44 AM Intel (INTC) has a dedicated salesperson for each of its "big four" cloud customers - Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft - says its server CPU chief. The big four develop their own Intel-based servers, and their preference for cheap, low-power, densely-packed hardware means they often use lower-margin CPUs than many enterprise clients - that's a big reason server industry revenue is declining, and the collective share of top-5 vendors slumping. But Intel is better off addressing this market than seeing cloud clients turn to AMD's SeaMicro unit or ARM-based CPUs. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 12:20 PM Windows (MSFT) notebook unit sales fell 10% Y/Y on Black Friday, claims NPD, which recently estimated a 24% Y/Y drop for the first month of Windows 8 sales. Windows 8 gear made up 89% of notebook sales and sported an ASP of just $368; touchscreen devices made up only 3% of sales. Mac (AAPL) sales were flat Y/Y while Android (GOOG) tablets saw a 177% increase, though their ASP plunged to $151 from $219 (no doubt thanks to the Kindle Fire/Nexus 7). TV units rose 4%, but revenue fell 6% thanks to falling ASPs. Total consumer electronics sales fell 5.6%. 16 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 10:42 AM Thanks to the impact of recent job cuts, AMD (AMD -1.7%) is pushing back the launch of its Radeon 8000 GPU line to Q213 from Q4, sources tell Digitimes. The 8000 chips, which succeed the 7000 line (Southern Islands), are seen as pivotal to AMD's efforts to take back GPU share lost this year to Nvidia's (NVDA +0.5%) GeForce 600 line (Kepler). Digitimes also claims Nvidia will release its Tegra 4 app processor in 1H13, and an integrated baseband/app processor in 2H - the latter is badly needed to compete against Qualcomm's Snapdragon line. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 3, 2012, 6:37 PM Some Microsoft (MSFT) news: 1) Microsoft has begun selling Office 2013, along with new versions of Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, Project, and Visio, to businesses. Office 2013 brings a touch-friendly UI, SkyDrive integration, and a stronger emphasis on subscriptions. Many of the complementary products are seeing price hikes. 2) A Microsoft insider claims Redmond will launch 3 new Surface models next year: an 8.6" RT model with a Qualcomm chip, an 11.6" Pro model with an AMD Temash chip, and a 14.6" "Surface Book" with an Intel Haswell chip. Surface RT sales have disappointed thus far. 15 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, December 3, 2012, 12:19 PM AMD (AMD +10.7%) is ripping higher again today; shares are now up 30% since the hard-luck chipmaker announced it would sell and lease back its Austin campus for $150M-$200M. 27.9% of the float was shorted as of Nov. 15 - are diminishing insolvency fears fueling a short-covering rally? 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, November 30, 2012, 10:19 AM Strong price pressure could join the list of problems facing PC component suppliers, who are already struggling to deal with slumping volumes. Digitimes reports Taiwanese notebook contract manufacturers want component vendors to "lower their quotes for 2013" in order to offset the profit hit caused by declining system ASPs and lower utilization rates. DRAM prices have already tumbled, and Goldman argued yesterday Intel's ASPs are vulnerable. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, November 30, 2012, 9:39 AM AMD (AMD +6.1%) is planning to launch a solid-state drive (SSD) line based on its Radeon GPU brand, SemiAccurate reports. While AMD would have the brand power and OEM/channel relationships needed to make a dent, it would also be entering a very competitive market featuring many players (SanDisk, Samsung, Micron, Intel, Toshiba) who can source NAND flash memory at cost. But this might be a good time for the struggling chipmaker to try expanding into a growth market. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
