- Friday, November 30, 2012, 9:39 AM AMD (AMD +6.1%) is planning to launch a solid-state drive (SSD) line based on its Radeon GPU brand, SemiAccurate reports. While AMD would have the brand power and OEM/channel relationships needed to make a dent, it would also be entering a very competitive market featuring many players (SanDisk, Samsung, Micron, Intel, Toshiba) who can source NAND flash memory at cost. But this might be a good time for the struggling chipmaker to try expanding into a growth market. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 11:12 AM Intel (INTC -2.1%) is trading lower after Citi and Goldman slash their estimates. Goldman, reiterating a Sell, thinks Intel's gross margin will probably drop in the coming quarters due to high inventories and declining ASPs. Meanwhile, AMD (AMD +7.4%) is rallying for the second day in a row after announcing plans to sell and lease back its Austin campus, though shares remain down sharply on the year. 27.9% of AMD's float was shorted as of Nov. 15. 9 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 10:29 AM Is Windows 8 making a bad situation worse for the (non-Apple) PC industry? NPD believes U.S. retail sales of Windows gear is down 21% Y/Y since Oct. 26, the day Win. 8 launched. Notebooks -24% and desktops -9%. Also, thanks to inventory-clearing and perhaps also a cautious enterprise response, Win. 8 has only made up 58% of Windows device sales since launch time, compared with 83% for Windows 7 in its first 4 weeks. 6% of Win. 8 notebook sales involved touchscreens, and ASPs rose to $477 from $433 in the year-ago period. (40M licenses) 12 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 9:37 AM Channelnomics thinks Microsoft's (MSFT) claim it has sold 40M Windows 8 licenses could be evidence of channel-stuffing. It notes many of the licenses may currently exist as inventory held by OEMs and resellers, and that StatCounter estimates Win. 8 is currently used on a mere 1% of the 1.5B PCs in operation. Nomura's Rick Sherlund is cutting estimates on Microsoft today, and says new Asian data points to a 7% Y/Y Q4 drop in PC shipments; a prior reading suggested flat growth. 10 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 8:04 AM AMD +1.6% after Reuters reports the chipmaker will sell and lease back its Austin campus for proceeds of $150M-$200M. AMD, which has been cutting jobs as it deals with share losses and poor PC demand, has reportedly hired JPMorgan to explore strategic options, though the company says it isn't up for sale. Yesterday, embattled CEO Rory Read said he was encouraged by Thanksgiving weekend PC sales in the U.S., but refused to promise a holiday season turnaround. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 4:58 PM 40M Windows 8 licenses have been sold thus far, a Microsoft (MSFT) exec boasts, while adding the upgrade pace is exceeding that for Windows 7. It's unknown, however, if this figure includes enterprises who have access to Win. 8 through a subscription, but haven't necessarily upgraded. Otherwise, 40M would be an impressive figure for such a short amount of time, especially in light of industry conditions and reports of tepid enterprise interest. On Oct. 30, Steve Ballmer claimed 4M Win. 8 upgrades were sold in the first 3 days of availability. 9 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 8:57 AM Intel (INTC) is paying PC audio hardware vendor Creative $20M to license graphics processor IP held by its ZiiLabs division (once known as 3DLabs), and $30M to acquire ZiiLabs' engineering assets. The purchase could bolster the competitiveness of the integrated GPUs found within Intel's PC and mobile processors - while the company has generally held a PC CPU performance edge against AMD, its GPU performance has trailed. 6 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 8:05 AM For whom H-P's (HPQ) FQ4 results toll: Dell (DELL) -1.9% premarket, Intel (INTC) -1.6%, AMD -1%. H-P reported a 14% Y/Y drop in PC revenue and 12% drops in both desktop and notebook shipments. The drop in commercial PC revenue (13%) was nearly as bad as the drop in consumer PC revenue (16%). 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 4:04 PM AMD (AMD +2.7%) may have plenty of problems, but bankruptcy risk isn't one of them, argues Williams Financial. Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala Development (previous) just raised its stake in the chipmaker to 19% from 15%, and Williams considers the odds of Mubadala refusing to provide AMD with needed liquidity to be very low. The firm thinks shares should return to the $3-$4 range if insolvency fears dissipate. 12 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 10:06 AM As Intel announces a CEO transition, Paul Thurrott reports Windows 8 PC sales have missed Microsoft's (MSFT) internal projections. He adds Microsoft is blaming the inability of OEMs to execute, though like others, he thinks that's far from the only culprit, and calls the OS a "Frankenstein’s monster mix of old and new that hides a great desktop upgrade under a crazy Metro front-end." Separately, Newegg says its Windows 8 sales are slow, though notebook demand is beginning to improve. 14 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 5:51 PM AMD is planning another restructuring that will probably include additional layoffs, AllThingsD reports. One source claims it's an open secret in AMD's offices more job cuts are on the way. The hard-luck chipmaker just cut 15% of its workforce (1,700 jobs), and (though it denies plans to conduct a major asset sale) has reportedly hired JPMorgan to evaluate its options. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 4:05 PM If Windows 8 is going to give the PC industry a much-needed lift, Microsoft (MSFT) has some convincing to do. Though 6 out of 10 respondents to a U.S. poll done by antivirus software firm Avast said they're aware of Windows 8, only 9% said they would speed up plans to buy a PC because of it, and 74% said they'll probably stick with what they have. Moreover, about a third of Windows users ready to buy a PC said they plan to switch to an Apple (AAPL) product. 49 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 4:57 PM So much for that. AMD -2.9% AH after stating it isn't planning either a sale of the company or a significant sale of assets. But the company didn't deny having hired JPMorgan to explore options. (previous: I, II) 6 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 4:00 PM More on AMD: Sources tell Reuters a full-blown sale of the company is "not a priority," but that a patent sale is among the options on the table. There's definitely some logic behind a cash-raising effort: AMD has over $2B in debt on its balance sheet, and the company's deteriorating cash flow situation has led to debt rating downgrades (I, II). 3 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 3:54 PM AMD (AMD +5.5%) soars on a report it has hired JPMorgan to explore strategic options. The struggling chipmaker has frequently been the subject of M&A rumors, but many are skeptical a third party will be interested in acquiring its CPU business, in light of Intel's (INTC) historical advantages in resources and scale. AMD does, however, have a sizable patent portfolio. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Monday, November 12, 2012, 6:12 PM The PC industry could lose 50M-100M units in annual sales by 2015 thanks largely to the impact of mobile devices, argues Barclays in a depressing report. Barclays, which is cutting estimates for Dell (DELL) and H-P (HPQ), forecasts PC sales will fall another 4% next year to 338M, and total just 311.5M in 2015. On the other hand, it expects tablet sales to reach 182M next year and 300M in 2016. Longbow is also downbeat, claiming checks indicate notebook orders are being cancelled; ultrabook demand is soft, and Intel and AMD are cutting prices. 40 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
