Will it Take a Liquidity Crisis for Intel to Rationalize Capital Spending? [view article]
From what I understand Intel is the one company pushing for the latest and greatest from semi equipment, insisting that Moore's law be followed to the letter. If they slow down, everyone else is likely to slow down. And nobody <em>has</em&g... to keep making capital expenditures that don't earn an acceptable return on capital. In fact, their duty to investors is the opposite. Reply

Doesn't INTC Have-to keep making these capital expenditure investments to maintain their competitive edge with the other fabs? INTC is competing with IBM and TSMC which are moving in "lock-step" with INTC. Building better faster fabs is the silver bullet that solves 2 problems at once AMD on one side and IBM/TSMC on the other. ReplyMaven
AMD Is In Real Trouble [view article]
Apple buying AMD and becoming a microprocessor designer and manufacturer? Are you really thinking here? ReplyAMD Is In Real Trouble [view article]
AMD has too much real technological and production capability to just go bust. They are a valuable asset to somebody and I can't see them hitting the floor before getting bought out. For strategic reasons Apple wouldn't want to be left facing a monopoly chip provider and using some of their vast cash to buy AMD at the right price, and then using their product, would make perfect business sense (changing out technology isn't something they've shied away from in the past). The same logic would apply to Hewlett Packard... Replygonzalez
AMD Is In Real Trouble [view article]
That is nothing. The real war that got fanboys enraged was good old 3dfx vs NVDA. People childishly identified themselves with companies as if they were football teams and a simple discussion about a technical issue rapidly degenerated into the nastiest personal attacks. When 3dfx went belly up, the fanboy base even wrote an internet petition so they didn't sell the company to evil Nvidia.Although not as shameful, the INTC/AMD thing is getting a little too far. I personally like AMD and hope they survive but I wouldn't like to be on their shoes right now. Reply

And where have all those people gone who said Apple's decision to go with Intel rather than AMD was a big mistake?! ReplyAMD: How Low Can It Go? [view article]

Why I'm Betting on Advanced Micro Devices - For Now [view article]
Steve, you ask some great questions! I think ATI was the right move for the company-- but Intel brilliantly played it against AMD. Since AMD had to take on a lot of debt as part of the acquisition, it has painted them into this murky financial corner. Your questions are spot on as both of them play into AMD's future-- but honestly, I don't really have a lot of perspective here. I'll continue to do research on it, and if/when I learn more, I'll post an updated column. Thanks for the kind words on the column. Best, surya ReplyWhy I'm Betting on Advanced Micro Devices - For Now [view article]
This whole Vista gui thing is playing off the GPU? How does AMD fit into the hand held ares? Thanks for a great column. ReplyWhy I'm Betting on Advanced Micro Devices - For Now [view article]
What is your feeling on the ATI piece? I can't believe that that isn't key to their long term plans and may help explain their move?? Any feel on how that merge is going? Replynchili

Maven, fair point. But AMD and Intel have gone back and forth. With Barcelona there are predictions that they will once again regain the performance edge. But regardless of the "lead" in performance, most consumers don't track (or notice) the minute complex benchmarks that PC magazines and professionals test. They want a computer that runs well for a great price. So even if AMD only had parity to slightly below parity, I'd bet at a superior-enough price, there would be a lot of home computer shoppers who would be happy to purchase. ReplyTrent

Depends on whether the unit sales miss is due to overall market decline or market share loss. We'll find out on Tuesday. ReplyMaven

Your comments imply equivalent chip performance. If that were the case, AMD wouldn't be in the predicament it is in now. Since Intel's chips are superior (currently), I doubt HP can go with an AMD-only stance even if they acquire AMD. Reply
