- Tuesday, June 18, 7:12 PM Amgen (AMGN) ups its stake in Cytokinetics (CYTK) to 11,909,406 shares from 3,484,806 shares reported on March 21. The increase now puts AMGN's holding at 7.58% of CYTK's outstanding float. CYTK +7.4% AH. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 18, 9:29 AM Cytokinetics' (CYTK) results from a Phase II trial of its of omecamtiv mecarbil treatment for heart failure have been accepted for presentation at a "Hot Line Late Breaking Trials Session" at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2013, which is taking place from Aug. 31 until Sep. 4. Cytokinetics' hasn't revealed any results but shares are up 14.4%. Those of partner Amgen (AMGN) are a mere +0.7%. In other news, Cytokinetics is set to join the Russell Global Index on June 28. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, June 17, 9:39 AM As expected, shares of Amgen (AMGN +1.3%) pop in early trading after a positive feature in Barron's over the weekend. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Saturday, June 15, 4:00 PM Amgen (AMGN) might be set for a "Barron's bump" come Monday after Reshma Kapadia says the shares may see a 20% upside just from "staying the course." Cited in the piece are CEO Robert Bradway's commitment to buybacks and dividends, cost cuts, a promising pipeline, and the shares' "sharp discount" to other large-cap biotechs. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, June 13, 8:25 AM "We believe the timing of the deal reflects Amgen's confidence in the program," Needham's Chad Messer says of yesterday's strategic collaboration expansion between Cytokinetics (CYTK) and Amgen (AMGN). Like SA contributor Smith On Stocks, Messer likes the prospects for Omecamtiv in Phase IIb clincals and says that while "the primary endpoint is the reduction of dyspnea … we believe as long as AMGN concludes there is sufficient efficacy to support starting a pivotal trial, CYTK shares should stage a significant rally." Messer's CYTK PT is now $3.50, representing a 150% upside. Shares +2% premarket. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, June 12, 2:20 PM A bit of sell-side commentary regarding Amgen's (AMGN -1.6%) announcement of top-line data from a Phase 3 trebananib trial (previous): DB analyst Robyn Karnauskas notes that sales of the treatment are not factored into the bank's estimates and as such, any "success would present upside to estimates." Karnauskas also likes the "positive" data released on the Psoriatic arthritis treatment Brodalumab. Nevertheless, concerns about Enbrel's competitive edge over cheaper generics are weighing on shares. (Other Psoriatic arthritis news: Apremilast effective) Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 12, 10:47 AM Cytokinetics (CYTK +10%) trades higher coming off an earlier trading halt following the company's announcement that it's expanded its strategic collaboration with Amgen (AMGN -0.7%) to include Japan. In 2006, the two companies entered into a deal to develop and commercialize small-molecule therapeutics for the treatment of heart failure, with omecamtiv mecarbil as their most advanced candidate. Initially, CYTK's license to AMGN excluded Japan, but under the expansion, it will now include Japan and cover additional products as well. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 12, 9:20 AM A Phase 3 trial of the angiopoietin inhibitor trebananib plus paclitaxel in ovarian cancer patients meets its primary endpoint of progression-free survival, Amgen (AMGN) says. The Hazard ratio was 0.66, indicative of a "34% reduction in the risk of disease progression or death." Shares +0.98% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Wednesday, June 12, 3:08 AM Amgen's (AMGN) blockbuster Enbrel drug for treating rheumatoid arthritis, which generated sales of $4.23B last year, is no more effective than a combination of three generic treatments, a study shows. While a regimen that includes Enbrel costs $25,000 a year per patient, the "triple therapy" costs just $1,000. The research didn't examine similar drugs from AbbVie (ABBV) or Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), although many doctors consider them to be equivalent to Enbrel. Despite the study, researchers feel that the branded treatments might be too well ensconced to be quickly replaced. 4 Comments [Healthcare, Top Stories]
- Monday, June 3, 11:43 AM Amgen (AMGN -3.1%) slips today as analysts give a muted response to its experimental skin-cancer drug, T-Vec, despite delivering better-than-expected study data at ASCO. The problem is a new class of PD-1 immunotherapy drugs from Merck (MRK) and Bristol-Myers (BMY) are dominating the field. RBC predicts they'll "eventually usher in new standard of care" for melanoma, and limiting T-Vec's sales potential to only around $300M to $500M annually - which isn't much considering the multibillion-dollar market potential for PD-1 drugs. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 29, 8:05 AM Amgen (AMGN -0.6%) forms a JV with Japan's Astellas Pharma (ALPMF.PK) to develop and sell five new drugs in the latter's home country, with the hope being to launch the first medicine in 2016. The JV should help Amgen partly fill what it has described as "a noticeable gap" - its absence from China and Japan. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, May 16, 1:49 PM Biotech names are weak today on the back of several ASCO data presentation releases: REGN -2.3%, ALXN -4.2%, VRTX -2.3%, CELG -4.5%, ARRY -2.2%, AMGN -1.4%. 1 Comment [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, May 6, 1:36 PM Merck (MRK -1.3%) gets no love today from the FDA's approval of Liptruxet late Friday, as the stock is likely dragged down with the rest of the big pharma names on the back of a CNBC report that criticizes their earnings so far. The article points to the fact that pharmaceutical companies have seen a 4.7% contraction in earnings, and a 3.2% drop in revenue this quarter. Why? Morningstar's Damien Cover says there are two primary reasons: FX impact, especially from the yen, and intensified generic competition from patent losses. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Monday, May 6, 7:33 AM Transgenomic (TBIO.OB) enters into a collaborative agreement with Amgen (AMGN) for the further development of a CE-IVD test for the detection of RAS mutations in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. (PR) Comment! [Healthcare]
- Friday, May 3, 5:43 PM An FDA panel has voted 17-1 that Amgen's (AMGN) blood-boosting drugs would benefit radiation survivors in the event of a nuclear attack. The drugs, known as Leukocyte growth factor drugs, are normally given to cancer patients to combat the effects of chemotherapy. The panel observed monkeys exposed to radiation, and those given AMGN's Neupogen showed a greater likelihood of survival, and the FDA says it's likely to provide the same benefit to people as well. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Friday, May 3, 4:18 PM By a 17-1 margin, the FDA votes Amgen's (AMGN +0.8%) Neulasta and Neupogen drugs could improve survival rates for people exposed to radiation following a nuclear attack. Bloomberg recently observed Neulasta and Neupogen , which are used to prevent infection during chemotherapy, collectively produced ~$5.4B in 2012 sales for Amgen. Comment! [Healthcare]

CYTK: Wall St completely ignoring great results of ALS and HF drugs. AMGN should just buy them out. Ridiculously undervalued at $70M - View all 2 replies

The Scientist: Omecamtiv is a wonder drug that can be used in the ICU like water. It raises CO/SV; lowers BP/HR. Too good to be true. -
briandiplacido: As a long-time ICU nurse who's seen tons of tachyarrythmia from inotropes, I agree (seems too good to be true). Interesting.
