Pharmaceutical Facts Investors Should Know [view article]
Pharma has long operated profitably under these premise. The trick these days is to reduce time from discovery to market, extending time on the market with exclusive patent protection. Eliminate candidates as earily in the process as possible for a reduction in cost. New technologies make this possible, drug modeling software is a much larger aspect of R & D. Your article looks at the situation as if it were static. Dynamic changes are in the industry beyound what is mentioned here. Reply

Amgen Prevents Biotechs from Reaching Profitability [view article]
They can spend billions for the bloated company of a few promising drugs, or invest under $100 million to partner with a small biotech with a promising pipeline. Why do they always get it wrong?

Who could afford to acquire Amgen? Pfizer? Merck? That would certainly be a mega-blockbuster, almost on the scale of the oil mergers in the late 90's.

"E&Y acknowledges it thought 2007 was gonna be the year biotech crossed that all-important threshold".

Gonna be? Time for a remedial course in English writing.

The author is incorrect in stating that Amgen will have to conduct a fracture study (instead of simply relying on BMD) for Denosumab due to the Vytorin. Fracture studies are the standard in phase III osteoporosis studies. Look at the FDA guidance document:

    www.fda.gov/CDER/GUIDA...

Also, look at Novartis' Reclast that also had fracture in its studies:

    www.bio-medicine.org/m.../

Finally, Denosumab is not a me-too drug. It is an antibody - not a bisphosphonate.

Amgen: A Random Gamble? [view article]
Amgen has been loaded with "deadwood" for a long time. It still is. As with most corporations, Amgen is an "at-will" company. Basically this affords them the opportunity to fire "at-will". No contracts are offered, although relo packages are offered. You do not have to take their relo offer. It is still a buyer beware when agreeing to their terms. As for the hearsay lawsuits, allow the courts their due and let all sides be heard before throwing dirt. If you bought a house in Southern California in the past 4 years, you gambled, and lost. My wife was offered all of the above to come to Amgen, we accepted the moving expenses and passed on the rest. Do your homework before accepting anything, from anyone. Amgen is still a great company and has brighter days ahead. Current employees need to quit your bitching, and do the job for which you are compensated. Trust me, it could be ALOT worse. Reply

Amgen: A Random Gamble? [view article]
All problems with "corporate culture" aren't factored in the stock price! The are over 1100 lawsuits for wrongful termination. The lawsuits vary from being raped on campus to being forced to participate in lesbian sex and discuss it in staff meetings! Ventura County Courts (Janal Urich vs. Stephanie Kafonek VP MD & Amgen et al) Of course they have the two reps saying that they were told to go into MDs office and remove patients' charts to get insureance companies to pay for Embrel. Exec Vp George Morrow gave this directive. The reps were told to create more business and "that it is a win win situation," Morrow said. The reps are both suing for $15 million. The morale has been severely low for about 2 years and to add salt to the wound the Southern California Real Estate Market is in one of the worst markets ever. Some house values are down more than 30%. Also, staff members that are layed off or terminated (even wrongfully) may have a relocation lien. Amgen's benefit for relocation was 20% down payment at 3-4% interest only automatically withdrawn from paycheck. This loan is due 45 after seperation and is typically $100ks. Reply

Most of Amgen's Epo/Aranesp problems are already factored into the stock price. The future of Amgen is dependent on its pipeline, of which Denosumab (for osteoporosis) is perhaps the most prominent. The competition in the osteoporosis market is not just with Fosamax, but with many other drugs. I will be writing an analysis on this soon. Reply

Biotech Stocks' Various Lupus Therapies: Opportunity or Lost Cause? [view article]
It is so sad that there are so few drugs to treat Lupus, and there is no cure. My daughter-in-law has Lupus and would absolutely love to have a baby, but without treatment her Lupus acts up. She was diagnosed in college when she had a major "flare", and even though she is a healthcare professional, she cannot find an adequate treatment. Reply

Msft must get into some serious bussiness with solar energy. It has the resources of more than 30 countries and could use some of that capital to make a real impact on world use of fossil fuels. As far as getting involved in the internet again:They want to pay all those lawyers and money to the europeans for daring undercut the statis be?The socialist(closet commies)will never agree to Msft competing on their markets.Just see how BA has been treated in comparison to Airbus.I think msft is only thinking how they will get a foothold in china.Forgetaboutit!Ch... isn't worth it and if you got any technology that they can steal they will and not give you squat for it.Goodday. MSFT should walk away at this point. YHOO declines in value each passing day and is it really worth the grief to try and integrate such differing cultures especially when their is so much animosity at YHOO.

MSFT would be much better served by walking away and instead making TWX and offer for AOL instead. That would be a win/win. MSFT gets the foothold it is looking for and Time Warner gets to unload a boat anchor that has been dragging on it's performance and valuation.

Honestly I don't understand why MSFT does not try to partner with a cable company or make a bid for a satellite company like DISH. There might be antitrust issues but, imagine the impact on say an MSFT, AOL, DISH combination on Google.

Regardless at this point the bid for YHOO is just a used wipe who's time has come to be flushed.........

What would be my bets on this? I'm thinking May $25 Put's against YHOO and May $32 calls for MSFT.
