- Wednesday, April 24, 8:36 AM Amazon's (AMZN) mobile ad network is sending out third-party ads via apps on smartphones and tablets as it begins to ramp up real-world testing of the value of its treasure trove of consumer data. It's hard to latch on to a reliable estimate of what the company will earn from its advertising network - but some analysts are throwing out the $1B mark for this year as a starting point. One thing nearly all agree on: the advertising side of the business should improve margins. (Previous: AMZN - the sleeping giant of media) Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Tuesday, April 23, 6:19 AM The Senate yesterday voted 74-20 to limit debate on legislation that would force retailers to collect taxes for online sales, opening the way for a final vote on the measure, which could take place this week. The White House officially backed the bill for the first time, although its prospects in the House are uncertain even if its passes the Senate. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, April 22, 6:44 AM The Senate is expected to this week vote on a bill that would allow states to force Internet retailers to collect sales tax. The Senate has already voted 75-24 in favor of a non-binding resolution that backs the idea, helped by increasing support from GOP governors who like the thought of billions of dollars in more revenue. Amazon (AMZN) is in favor of the legislation, although eBay (EBAY) opposes it, saying it will add extra burdens to small businesses. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 18, 2:12 PM eBay's revenue miss and light Q2 guidance are taking a toll on Amazon (AMZN -3.6%), which delivers its own Q2 report in 7 days. eBay's earnings call remarks about European weakness probably aren't going over well either, given Amazon's strong exposure to the continent. Yesterday, Nomura raised its PT on Amazon to $315 from $300, albeit while respectively cutting its 2013 and 2014 EPS estimates to $1.67 and $3.44. The firm is now modeling higher D&A (heavily tied to AWS capex) and fulfillment expenses, but also higher revenue and gross margin. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 9:27 AM Amazon (AMZN) plans to launch eight comedy pilots for free on Amazon Instant Video as its original content initiative starts to pick up steam. Unlike House of Cards which had a hefty production budget, the comedy pilots are low-cost and the company intends to factor in viewer responses before deciding which projects to greenlight. 1 Comment [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, April 17, 1:20 PM Amazon (AMZN -2.3%) roundup: 1) Amazon has reportedly paid $26M to buy Evi, a British developer of a Siri alternative that users a proprietary natural language search engine and voice recognition tech licensed from Nuance (NUAN). If true, look for Evi's software to soon be bundled with Kindle hardware. 2) Amazon's Appstore for Android is now available in nearly 200 countries, including major emerging markets (the source of much of Android's growth) such as India, Brazil, and Mexico. 3) Amazon has filed a patent application for an anonymous mobile payments system; expect PayPal (EBAY) to take a close look. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 16, 7:04 PM Microsoft (MSFT) roundup: 1) ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley reports Microsoft is thinking of bringing back the Start button with Windows Blue, and of also allowing PCs to boot in desktop mode. The report follows major criticism of Win. 8's UI changes, and ugly Q1 PC data partly blamed on the OS. 2) In starting coverage at Overweight, Morgan Stanley asserts Microsoft "can still grow revenues with PCs declining 5% a year over the next five years." Also, an MS CIO survey found 20% of respondents using Windows Azure, compared with 13% using Amazon Web Services (AMZN). (earlier: I, II) 8 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 16, 12:42 PM Amazon's (AMZN +1.6%) new online store geared toward +50-year old shoppers will include more than just coupons and product descriptions as the company plans to create a mini-portal for the AARP-set stuffed with content. Analysts think the company has a fighting chance to improve usage among the 65M Internet users over fifty with the site's focus on savings and lifestyle. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 16, 10:48 AM The cloud infrastructure price wars seem to have no end in sight: Microsoft (MSFT) responds to Amazon's (AMZN) neverending AWS price cuts - in last week's shareholder letter, Jeff Bezos bragged of cutting prices 27 times over the last 7 years - by promising its Azure service will match AWS cut for cut. Rackspace (RAX - previous) can't be too happy about that. The promise comes as Microsoft overhauls Azure to give clients a way to easily migrate Windows Server/Linux workloads to its public cloud with the help of virtualization software. (last fall: I, II) (Google) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 15, 2:07 PM Amazon (AMZN -1.5%) roundup: 1) Baird forecasts $10B in 2016 revenue for Amazon Web Services, which is believed to have pulled in ~$2B last year. Bernstein thinks AWS could generate $20B by 2020, and values the business at $24B (a less gaudy valuation than Oppenheimer's, and roughly on par with Macquarie's). 2) Amazon has launched a site aimed at customers aged 50 and older, replete with a digital Coupons section. 3) Amazon will reportedly start taking Kindle e-reader pre-orders in China tomorrow, putting it in competition with Dangdang (DANG) and other local vendors. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, April 12, 1:21 PM E-books sales are still growing, but not at the manic rate they once did, reports trade association AAP. After growing to account for 17% of U.S. book publisher sales in 2011 from a mere 3% in 2009, e-books made up 22.6% of 2012 sales. Altogether, U.S. trade book sales are believed to have grown 6.2% in 2012 to $7.1B, evidence the e-book transition has done more good than harm for the publishing industry (PSO, MHP, SCHL). Amazon (AMZN), with its huge share of e-book sales, can't complain, but Barnes & Noble (BKS) is arguably in a tougher spot. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, April 12, 10:08 AM The percentage of women shoppers moving toward buying items online continues to increase at a rapid rate. According to a market survey, 89% of women now use online browsing over store hopping to compare items and 47% complete their purchases online compared to 45% in stores. The trend works in the favor of retailers with thriving e-commerce and mobile channels. Limited Brands (LTD -1.3%), Macy's (M +2.1%), and Urban Outfitters (URBN -0.6%) come to mind - while Amazon (AMZN -0.4%) doesn't mind the coach potato shopping syndrome one little bit either. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, April 12, 9:28 AM Amazon (AMZN) CEO Jeff Bezos issues his annual letter to shareholders in which he takes on accusations the company is being run as a "charitable" organization for the benefit of consumers by noting customer trust and brand reputation will continue to outweigh short-term swings in Amazon's share price. The Bezos strategy: "I think long-term thinking squares the circle." (full Amazon letter .pdf) 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 11, 6:49 PM Amazon (AMZN) launches Look.com, a children's apparel/footwear site carrying 40K items, including some from major brands. The site is the work of Amazon's Quidsi unit, which also runs Diapers.com, Soap.com (health/beauty products), Casa.com (home essentials), and several other e-commerce sites. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, April 5, 1:33 PM Does the confluence of the sixth most popular website on the planet and what could be the largest treasure trove of consumer buying data make Amazon (AMZN -1.5%) the "sleeping giant" of media? The company's display ads are using some savvy integration of reviews and shopping cart compatibility that could leave competitors in the dust. Though it's still early in the game in Amazon's bid to be an ad publisher, media analysts note some of its innovative ad formats are seeing a 20-30X lift over traditional ads. 1 Comment [Consumer, Tech]
- Friday, April 5, 10:31 AM Sports Chalet is the latest retailer to jump into offering same-day delivery services, saying it will test a program to both sell and rent items from stores in the West. Though the same-day delivery concept is getting plenty crowded with ideas ranging from the use of lockers (AMZN), in-store pickup (ODP, HD), valets (EBAY), and even in the case of Wal-Mart (WMT) a potential trust-your-neighbor delivery service - widespread adoption still appears far away to retail analysts. What to watch: To protect margins, retailers are expected to slip in some fees on same-day delivery. Comment! [Consumer]

$CRM Will $AMZN's adherence to a semblance of financial gravity lead to a correction of other crazies, like $CRM (on GAAP eps, $24bn m cap)? - View all 1 replies

ReligiousWacko: I hope so as I'm short $CRM and $AMZN. The most remarkable thing about AMZN's drop today was that it "beat expectations".
