- Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 9:29 AM Rackspace (RAX) -1.1% following a downgrade to Hold from Jefferies. The firm is worried Rackspace's growth could "modestly slow down" as it migrates its cloud solutions to the OpenStack cloud infrastructure platform. Rackspace and many IT giants are hoping OpenStack will prevent rapidly-growing Amazon Web Services (AMZN), which counts Zynga, Dropbox, Netflix, and Pinterest among its customers, from dominating the cloud infrastructure market. - Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 2:46 PM For now at least, the iPad (AAPL) is maintaining an iPod-like grip on the U.S. tablet market. ChangeWave's latest survey of North American consumers finds 73% of tablet buyers saying they plan to buy an iPad. A mere 8% say they're getting a Kindle Fire (AMZN), and just 6% say they'll buy a Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy Tab. 81% of new iPad owners say they're very satisfied with their device, compared with 71% of iPad 2 owners, 46% of Galaxy Tab owners, and 41% of Kindle Fire owners. - Monday, June 4, 2012, 4:43 PM Amazon (AMZN) has bought the publishing rights to 3,000 backlist titles from Avalon Books. The books, predominantly romance, mystery, and Western titles, will be published by Amazon's growing in-house publishing arm. Expect the Kindle editions to be sold cheaply, and the acquisition itself to further irritate rival publishers and booksellers. Comment! [Consumer, Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, May 31, 2012, 11:47 AM Amazon (AMZN +1%) outperforms a little after Nomura asserts the company's margins, which have steadily declined as it ramped its e-commerce, Kindle, and web services investments, may be bottoming. Higher shipping fees and other policy changes "may signal an increasing sense of economic discipline," Nomura adds, as may $1.2B worth of stock buybacks. Amazon rallied in April following its Q1 report, thanks in part to a better-than-expected gross margin. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas, Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 9:30 AM Amazon (AMZN) strikes a deal with NBCUniversal that allows Lovefilm members in the U.K. streaming rights to Universal Pictures titles. Lovefilm keeps upping the ante in the U.K. after Netflix (NFLX) arrived on the streaming scene and with BSkyB (BSYBY.PK) now also in the mix. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 2:03 PM MercadoLibre (MELI -1%) ticks lower after Barron's suggests Amazon's (AMZN) growing Latin American ambitions pose a threat to the company. The paper notes Amazon is adding staff in Brazil, a market that accounts for over half of MercadoLibre's sales, and points out Amazon's site is already one of Latin America's top 3 e-commerce destinations, though the company still has no physical operations in the region. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 9:50 AM As part of its efforts to ramp its mobile ad business (and thus better monetize its Kindle line), Amazon (AMZN) has "kicked the tires on a few mobile-ad companies," AdAge reports. One of those companies is said to be JumpTap, one of the largest independent mobile ad networks. It's added Amazon has hired ex-Microsoft mobile marketing chief Jamie Wells to head its ad sales efforts. Millennial Media (MM +3.2%) appears to be getting a lift from AdAge's report. Comment! - Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 7:12 AM Amazon (AMZN) plans to start offering prepaid Internet access for smartphones and tablet computers in Japan in a move that could serve as a test case for a potential U.S. launch in the future. The company will sell SIM cards for ¥1,980 ($25) that give users up to 500MB of data usage. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 25, 2012, 8:58 AM At the top of Goldman Sachs' VIP List of 50 stocks most important to hedge funds is Apple (AAPL), followed by GOOG, ESRX, MSFT, QCOM, C, GM, PCLN, JPM and LMCA. Leading the list of the firm's top 50 short positions is JNJ, XOM, INTC, IBM, AMZN, T, CVX, VZ, DUK and DIS. 12 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 9:27 AM Amazon (AMZN) announces a licensing agreement with Paramount Pictures that will bring hundreds of well-known movies to its Prime Instant Video service over the next few years. The service now has over 17K titles in its arsenal after counting movies and individual TV episodes. (PR) Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, May 21, 2012, 2:29 PM Bill Gurley defends Facebook's (FB -9.3%) weak post-IPO showing by pointing out Amazon (AMZN) fell below its IPO price shortly after its 5/17/97 offering, and didn't move above until 7/6. Of course, Amazon was worth less than $1B at the time, whereas Facebook is worth $95B today. TechCrunch founder-turned-VC Mike Arrington says he just bought some Facebook shares. - Monday, May 21, 2012, 9:12 AM Death by Amazon: Historic book publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt files for bankruptcy in order to try to eliminate a whopping $3B in debt. The company made a late bid to jump into the electronic books market with an Amazon (AMZN) publishing deal, but couldn't make headway with the debt it piled up while hardcover book sales plummeted due in large part to the influence of its newfound partner. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 18, 2012, 6:52 PM As Microsoft (MSFT) and PC OEMs hope the fall release of Windows 8 systems featuring ARM-based (ARMH) processors will give their PC/tablet sales a lift, the OEMs are reportedly struggling to reach tablet price points they consider necessary to compete with the iPad (AAPL) and Kindle Fire (AMZN), due to Microsoft's insistence on a $90-$100 Windows license fee. Concerns also exist about the software compatibility issues facing ARM-based hardware. 20 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, May 18, 2012, 9:56 AM Amazon (AMZN) will likely launch a 10.1" version of the Kindle Fire in Q3, claims Digitimes. Of course, the site previously claimed an 8.9" model would arrive in Q2, whereas it now asserts Amazon has suspended development of the product. The Kindle Fire appears to have lost share to the iPad in Q1, though the magnitude of the loss is up for debate. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 6:59 PM Hungry for ways to monetize the Kindle Fire, which it sells at a loss, Amazon (AMZN) is now selling ad space for the device's welcome screen. With a minimum commitment of $600K, the ads, which may or may not cover the current Kindle Fire, don't come cheap. Amazon already sells ad-supported versions of its Kindle e-reader, and is believed to generate $1B in annual revenue from product ads sold on Amazon.com. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 12:47 PM E-Commerce China Dangdang (DANG -15.1%) plummets after delivering soft revenue guidance to go with mixed Q1 results. The online bookseller says it expects Q2 revenue of RMB1186M ($187.5M), below a consensus of $202.1M. Also, Dangdang's Q1 cost of sales amounted to 85.8% of revenue, up 530 bps Y/Y. A mix shift towards lower-margin general merchandise sales relative to media sales was responsible for the increase. Amazon (AMZN) can probably sympathize. Since both AMZN and AAPL are likely to get downgrades early next week, there is a good chance the market will go down then. - View all 2 replies

OneLongTrade: valuation. Whereas AMZN currently has declining margins, AAPL has increasing. If p/e is anything, AMZN should trade at a more modest level. -
OneLongTrade: Full disclosure, I'm not short AMZN right now,but I was late last year. I don't think their model is sustainable, but time will tell I guess

I cannot get over the # of people who borrow my options book on $AMZN. That means there are plenty of Prime members. And I write in a niche. - View all 16 replies

TechnologyMike: I like prime, I own prime, but is this model for distribution more energy efficient than getting a trunk full of groceries from the store? -
Rocco Pendola: Good question. And honestly, I do not know. I don't think they're overly concerned with that, for better or worse.
