- Thursday, May 3, 2012, 11:46 AM The Kindle Fire (AMZN) accounted for just 4% of global tablet shipments in Q1, estimates IDC, down sharply from Q4's 16.8%. If there were any doubts TXN's wireless chip weakness had to do with Amazon as well as Nokia, that should put them to rest. Partly due to seasonality, IDC believes global tablet shipments fell 38% Q/Q, but still rose 120% Y/Y. The iPad (AAPL) is believed to have grown its share to 68% from 54.7% in spite of a 23% Q/Q drop. (previous) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 11:53 AM Amazon (AMZN +0.2%) announces that Amazon Studios will expand its efforts to develop comedy and kids shows with an online initiative that allows budding producers to submit their content and earn royalties. Unlike most Hollywood decision-making, crowdsourcing will be used to determine which Amazon shows are greenlighted. 1 Comment [On the Move, Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 9:38 AM Target (TGT) is halting sales of Amazon's (AMZN) Kindle line as of May 13 due to a "conflict of interest," per an internal memo. The Verge speculates a recent deal to open Apple (AAPL) mini-stores within its outlets could be the reason. This won't be the first time this year a bricks-and-mortar retailer has chosen to boycott Amazon products. 9 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 6:51 AM Is Amazon (AMZN) crazy like a fox? A string of deals by the company to dutifully collect sales tax may end up putting it in a better position. Supporters of a federal sales tax framework face an uphill battle trying to catch support after key states already see dollars roll in and with an election making any tax vote trickier. Meanwhile, Amazon can cut strategic state tax deals on its own terms. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 1, 2012, 5:07 PM Google (GOOG) is dipping its toes in the increasingly popular big data software space, announcing it will sell its BigQuery analytics tool to enterprises. Google plans to charge for both processing the huge data sets BigQuery is capable of handling, and for storing the data on its servers. Speculation exists that Amazon (AMZN) will also offer a cloud-based analytics platform, which could rely on its S3 storage service. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 1, 2012, 11:28 AM A smartphone from Amazon (AMZN +0.2%) stands as the "logical next step" for the company given its status as a trusted seller of physical goods, according to ABI Research's Aapo Markkanen. An AMZN smartphone could also deliver what the firm's arsenal of e-readers can't - a truly mobile hardware device providing a 24-7 locked-in connection to the firm's content ecosystem. (Previous AMZN smartphone chatter: I, II) 3 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, April 30, 2012, 11:49 AM Amazon (AMZN +1.8%) is adding to Friday's post-earnings gains in spite of Microsoft and Barnes & Noble's (BKS +67.3%) tie-up. Microsoft's cash will allow B&N to take the Nook global, the company asserts, and hopes are up it will also let B&N match the aggressive e-book pricing Amazon is expected to show following the DOJ's settlement. David Carnoy thinks the largest benefit will be greater consumer confidence in B&N's longevity. (more) Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, April 30, 2012, 10:58 AM Suddenly everyone wants to offer a cloud storage service. The latest example is LG, which plans to launch a beta version of its LG Cloud service (syncs content between PCs, Android phones, and LG TVs) tomorrow. Data center owners and providers of cloud infrastructure services, such as EQIX, RAX, DFT, and AMZN, might be the main beneficiaries of this gold rush. Market leader Dropbox relies on Amazon's S3 storage platform. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 30, 2012, 9:13 AM More from Barron's: The paper also talks up the value of Amazon Web Services (AWS), which has emerged as a dominant player in the fast-growing cloud infrastructure services market, and likely contributed to Amazon's (AMZN) Q1 gross margin increase. Nomura's Brian Nowak values AWS at $48/share, based on a 4.7x multiple of estimated 2016 sales of $6.21B. (more) Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, April 27, 2012, 4:15 PM Amazon (AMZN +15.8%) discloses in its Q1 10-Q it has settled a dispute with Texas over a $269M tax bill by agreeing to collect sales taxes as of July 1, and committing to create 2,500+ jobs and spend $200M+ in capex within the state over the next 4 years. Amazon previously offered to invest more in exchange for a 4-year tax exemption. The company has already struck tax collection deals with California, Virginia, and other states. - Friday, April 27, 2012, 10:37 AM Looking to challenge market leader Flipkart and a slew of other local players, eBay (EBAY) is boosting its Indian e-commerce investments. The online auction giant hopes PayPal integration will give it an edge in a country where cash-on-delivery is the most common payment method. Looming on the horizon is Amazon (AMZN), which recently launched Indian price-comparison site Junglee.com. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, April 27, 2012, 10:19 AM As Amazon (AMZN +13%) takes off following its Q1 report, bulls are encouraged by its continued retail share gains and the 120 bps Y/Y increase in its gross margin, which was fueled by soaring e-book and web services revenue - RBC notes Amazon's GM jump is its largest in 10 years. Others, however, remain worried about Amazon's enormous spending growth. The company hired another 9,400 people in Q1, its biggest increase ever. (more) (transcript) Comment! In addition, BofA and SunTrust upgrade to Buy, but JMP Securities doesn't join the party - calling valuation "unattractive." AMZN +16.4% premarket. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 26, 2012, 6:30 PM Amazon states on its Q1 (I, II) earnings call (webcast) that sales from third parties on Amazon's site, which tend to carry lower margins, rose 300 bps Q/Q. The company also says it plans to invest another $800M-$900M on capex in Q2, evidence its aggressive spending isn't letting up. However, few details are provided about the Kindle and e-book disputes. AMZN +13.4% AH. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 26, 2012, 4:46 PM More on Amazon's Q1: Operating income of $192M well above guidance, but down 40% Y/Y. Company expects Q2 operating income of -$260M to $40M. North American sales +36% Y/Y (+37% in Q4), international +31% (even with Q4). Merchandise sales +43%, media +19%. New AAPL 7" tablet at $329 is competition for AMZN's Kindle Fire (& Fire HD). This likely puts extra pressure on AMZN's margins. - View all 5 replies

David White: You can use spreads to reduce the costs, although they are a little trickier. This also keeps you from losing a lot of money on time value.
