- Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 6:32 PM Amazon (AMZN) adds a new weapon in its battle to attract readers, acquiring the exclusive North American rights to publish the James Bond spy titles in both print and digital form. AMZN will make the paperback editions available to all retailers, while the digital titles initially will be available only via the Kindle e-book store. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 11:36 AM Amazon's (AMZN) has finally reached e-book distribution deals with some major Japanese publishing houses, reports The Asahi Shimbun. It's added Amazon has been squabbling with local publishers over the right to set retail prices (that sounds familiar), among other things. Progress remains slow: Jeff Bezos only promises that a release date for Japanese Kindles will be announced by year's end. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, April 13, 2012, 12:18 PM Jeff Bezos' annual letter to shareholders trumpets the ability of Amazon's (AMZN) web services, fulfillment, and direct publishing platforms to "empower others to unleash their creativity," and asserts "even well-meaning gatekeepers slow innovation." That's likely a shot at the publishers whom Amazon has often been at loggerheads with, and also Apple (AAPL), whose e-book and in-app purchase policies have been a source of strife. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, April 13, 2012, 8:37 AM It looks as if Apple (AAPL) is serious about fighting the DOJ's e-book antitrust suit. Spokesman Tom Neumayr declares the DOJ's allegations to be "simply not true," and says Apple's entry into the e-book market "fostered innovation and competition, breaking Amazon’s (AMZN) monopolistic grip on the publishing industry." Some disagree. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, April 13, 2012, 6:46 AM Amazon (AMZN) may be inflating the size of its streaming library by counting each episode of a TV series as a separate show. The 17K mark the company boasts of in advertising only represents approximately 1,745 movies and 150 TV shows. Netflix (NFLX) is reported to count individual episodes in its total as well, although it doesn't actively promote the inflated count. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, April 12, 2012, 5:08 PM Barnes & Noble (BKS -6.4%), off sharply for the second day following the DOJ's e-book settlement with 3 publishers, is up 1.6% AH after announcing a version of its Nook Simple Touch e-reader with built-in lighting. The product is said to be "optimized for low-light conditions," and will sell for $139. Amazon (AMZN), whose Kindle Touch goes for $99, is reportedly working on a front-lit Kindle. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 12, 2012, 10:40 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS -4%) drops again as the e-book settlement (I, II) appears likely to prompt rival Amazon (AMZN +2.1%) to cut prices to grab market share and further pressure profit margins for BKS if it gets into an e-book pricing war. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 12, 2012, 10:39 AM Amazon (AMZN) makes it easier to get rid of dust-collecting CDs, offering to buy them back in exchange for AMZN gift cards. AMZN hopes the service eventually will translate to more purchases and more loyal customers; studies show that when consumers redeem gift cards or credit, they tend to spend 40% more than the value of that credit. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, April 12, 2012, 8:36 AM Though Amazon Prime (AMZN) is proving a costly service for the e-commerce giant to maintain, Amazon is working on expanding its reach beyond Amazon.com, reports Wells Fargo. As evidence, the firm points to job descriptions for a "Prime Expansion" team that will expand the scope of Prime's benefits. Just how popular a service Prime is remains a point of contention - Bloomberg and RBC recently reached very different subscriber figures. Comment!
- Thursday, April 12, 2012, 8:33 AM The DOJ's price-fixing suit against Apple (AAPL) and 2 publishers remains a hot-button subject. CNET concludes the publishers may be in trouble, but Apple probably isn't, given it wasn't present at a key meeting. Tim Carmody thinks the terms of the settlement with 3 publishers should leave Jeff Bezos smiling. Matthew Ingram argues Amazon (AMZN) is the most sympathetic party in this dispute, since it's ultimately fighting to offer consumers lower e-book prices. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 3:11 PM The DOJ's e-book settlement with Simon & Schuster (CBS), Hachette, and HarperCollins (NWS, NWSA) requires deals with Apple (AAPL) to be terminated and renegotiated, along with other contracts that restrict an e-book retailer's ability to set final prices (e.g. their deals with AMZN and BKS). However, the settlement doesn't mandate publishers adopt a wholesale distribution model, such as the one Amazon originally used to discount e-book prices. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 9:57 AM As expected, the DOJ is filing suit against Apple (AAPL) over allegedly colluding with publishers to fix e-book prices. The outcome of the suit is likely a bigger deal for Amazon (AMZN) than for Apple, given its interest in regaining control over Kindle e-book prices. 6 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 4:57 AM The DOJ could reportedly sue Apple (AAPL) and Macmillan today over the alleged fixing of e-book prices while coming to a settlement with Simon & Schuster (CBS), Hachette and HarperCollins (NWSA). Justice wants a deal that would let Amazon (AMZN) and other retailers, not the publishers, decide what to charge customers. 7 Comments [Top Stories, Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 3:49 PM Hewlett-Packard (HPQ +0.6%) is the Dow's only gainer after news it will start offering cloud-based computing services, competing with the likes of Amazon (AMZN) with its new Converged Cloud tool to give companies access to computing power over the internet as an alternative to buying expensive servers. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 1:36 PM Amazon (AMZN -2.1%) plans to add a feature to it apps for Kindle and Android devices that allows users to make purchases using the firm's one-click purchasing feature. The move should help Amazon attract better apps and content by empowering developers to charge for digital content and subscriptions. Comment! [On the Move, Tech]
- Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 12:14 PM J.P. Morgan's 15 companies it views as potentially the next Apple, sporting "secular growth opportunities, a strong market position and attractive valuation": NTAP, AMZN, LNKD, DIS, CMCSA, TRMB, QCOM, ACN, BRCM, VMW, TIBX, QLIK, ANSS, INTU, CREE. 15 Comments [Quick Ideas, Tech]

Paulo Santos: Q4 would be negative from California and Texas, but with more Kindles than last year. Overall Q4 seems dangerous, AMZN might guide down. -

AMZN trading at 93.5 PE. Most retailers trading at 10-20 PE's. If figure premium for AMZN, still only 40 at most. Way too high. - View all 1 replies

So does this blow the theory that retailers were reporting soft holiday sales b/c consumers all bought from AMZN? - View all 4 replies

Malt Backbone: Thx guys, but I was commenting more on the softness in consumer spending than on AMZN itself. -
Chines33: I know, just saying AMZNs normal report means nothing in my view toward consumer overall.
