- Wednesday, March 20, 10:29 AM More on Amazon: TechCrunch reports a $99 7" Kindle Fire HD is in production, and will ship this year. The device will reportedly have a 1280x800 resolution and use a Texas Instruments (TXN) OMAP chip, even though TI is gradually exiting the mobile processor space. It's not a stretch to assume the margins for such a device, which would allow Amazon to undercut Google's (GOOG) Nexus 7 (but perhaps not for long) and grow its emerging markets reach, will be negative. With such aggressive pricing, will IDC's tablet forecasts need to be raised again? 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 20, 10:16 AM It's now Amazon's (AMZN) turn to be the subject of a music service rumor: sources tell The Verge's Greg Sandoval (who seems to have some good studio contacts) the e-commerce giant has held "very informal" talks about a Spotify-like subscription streaming service. The report comes shortly after Spotify's paid subs crossed 6M, and as rumors fly about Apple and Google's music service ambitions. 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 19, 4:03 PM The CIA has agreed to a 10-year deal with Amazon Web Services (AMZN) that's worth up to $600M, trade publication FCW reports. AWS will reportedly build a private cloud for the CIA to help it "keep up with emerging technologies like big data in a cost-effective manner." While not as big a validation of AWS as having the CIA use Amazon's public cloud (that could be a while), such a deal would still be a major talking point as AWS tries to expand its enterprise/government base. (Macquarie estimates) (more) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 19, 1:01 PM eBay (EBAY +1.4%) is eliminating listing fees for most items and simplifying its commission fees, as it tries to sustain Marketplaces' resurgence and slow down Amazon's (AMZN -1.2%) rapid 3rd-party sales growth. Lower-margin items such as electronics will sport lower fee rates than higher-margin items such as clothing. eBay claims the moves, its first fee changes since 2010, will provide more transparency for merchants, who have complained of overly complicated pricing. Yesterday, Reuters reported of discontent among Amazon merchants over rising fees. 7 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 19, 9:02 AM JMP launches coverage on the Internet sector with a bullish bias. Google (GOOG), Priceline (PCLN), AOL, eBay (EBAY), and Zillow (Z) have been started at Outperform, while Amazon (AMZN), Facebook (FB), and Expedia (EXPE) have been started at Market Perform. FB +0.8%. GOOG +0.5%. Z +1.3%. EBAY +1.5% with the help of Cantor's upgrade. 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, March 18, 1:04 PM Amazon (AMZN) is the new eBay (EBAY): just as eBay merchants have long griped over rising Marketplaces/PayPal fees, Amazon's 3rd-party sellers have become agitated over a string of fee hikes - both for Amazon's cut on merchant sales, and for related services. 3rd-party sales now make up 39% of Amazon's unit sales, and have been lifting its gross margin. eBay could benefit from the backlash - one firm estimates it costs $2.72 to sell a $10 item on eBay vs. $3.92 on Amazon - but as eBay knows all too well, complaining and leaving are two different things. 7 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, March 18, 6:57 AM A group of online merchants file a lawsuit against Amazon (AMZN) in Washington over a policy by the company to withhold payments to sellers for more than 90 days. The suit contends Amazon is a "money transmitter" required by state law to disburse funds within ten business days. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Saturday, March 16, 3:21 PM Google (GOOG) acquires Talaria, a developer of Web application server software said to offer superior performance and support for more programming languages than alternatives. Talaria will be used by Google's cloud infrastructure unit as it tries to gain ground on dominant Amazon Web Services (AMZN) following a 2012 launch. News of the purchase comes shortly after startup Scalr unveiled benchmarks that showed Google's solutions often have a big performance edge over Amazon's, while admitting (much like Netflix) Amazon's offerings are more comprehensive. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, March 15, 7:05 PM Morgan Stanley selects 20 stocks for the long term, based on "competitive advantages, business model, pricing power, cost efficiency and growth": AMZN, AMT, BLK, CPN, CP, CVX, COST, EL, GILD, HON, JPM, LTD, MON, NWSA, PM, RPM, SBUX, SYMC, TMO, WMB. 13 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Friday, March 15, 5:26 PM Netflix (NFLX) product chief Neil Hunt has no problem praising Amazon (AMZN). Amazon Web Services, that is: Hunt declares AWS, which continues to underpin Netflix's streaming services even as Amazon Prime becomes a serious rival, "a very meaningful step ahead "of alternatives from Google and Microsoft "in terms of having a complete solution of low-level components that can be assembled into a package that works." AWS has been adding new services left and right as it tries to both grow its enterprise customer base and win more business from mainstay Internet clients. (previous) Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, March 15, 1:53 PM Facebook (FB) workers love Mark Zuckerberg: the founder/CEO of the world's biggest social network has received a 99% approval rating from employees on Glassdoor; that's up from 2012's 85%. SAP co-CEOs Bill McDermott and Jim Hagemann, who have been trying to remake the software giant's culture, also come in at 99%. Other tech CEOs receiving high marks include EMC's Joe Tucci (96%), Qualcomm's (QCOM) Paul Jacobs (95%), Google's (GOOG) Larry Page (95%), and Citrix's (CTXS) Mark Templeton (95%). Tim Cook (AAPL) and Jeff Bezos (AMZN) both come in at 93%. 18 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 14, 6:52 AM More on JPMorgan's downgrade of Amazon (AMZN): The firm says its bottom-up analysis on Amazon suggests decelerating gross profit growth in 2013. In addition, 2014 EPS is taken down to $2.83/share from $3.01/share. AMZN -1.7% premarket. 7 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Thursday, March 14, 6:40 AM JPMorgan downgrades Amazon (AMZN) to a Neutral rating from Overweight and lowers its price target to $300. The firm drops its estimates for 2013-2014 revenue and gross profit projections by 1% and 3%, respectively. 1 Comment [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, March 13, 1:20 PM Amazon (AMZN -0.2%) launches its 8.9-inch Kindle tablet in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Japan. In addition, the company lowered the prices on the larger-sized tablet in the U.S. to $269 for the Wi-Fi version and $399 for the 4G product. 1 Comment [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, March 13, 9:12 AM More on Amazon (AMZN) Prime: Morningstar notes the big jump in Prime memberships is partially due to the free trial included with a Kindle Fire. According to the firm's estimates, 30% to 40% of all trials have been converted into a paid membership - a decent rate compared to other promotions. On profits, estimates run as high as $78 per member after accounting for shipping and licensing fees. (Previous: Prime subs +10M, Amazon's pricing lever) 3 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, March 13, 7:23 AM Amazon (AMZN) makes so much money off of its Prime customers it could drop the $79 annual fee and still come out way ahead. Though the company has no pressing reason to cut into the Prime program with it accounting for close to a third of the firm's operating profit, it's a lever which should strike some fear into retailers such as Target (TGT) and Wal-Mart (WMT). 26 Comments [Consumer, Tech]

Had $AAPL bought $AMZN ($125Bn), $PCLN ($34Bn) and $NFLX ($9Bn) with the $232Bn cap they lost, would they then get AMZN's 159 p/e for $8Tn? - View all 3 replies
