- Monday, March 11, 7:59 AM Redbox (CSTR) and Verizon (VZ) could be looking to break into original programming. At a recent tech symposium, a Creative Artists Agency lawyer tipped off that the companies have been inquiring about programming opportunities. If the report pans out, it makes for beefier streaming competition for Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon (AMZN). 2 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, March 11, 7:31 AM Book publishing groups and Barnes & Noble oppose Amazon's (AMZN) bid to nab domain suffix names such as ".book", ".author", and ".read" due to the competitive threat it would present. Internet watchdog ICANN is in the process of doling out rights for top-level domains to companies. Amazon has more than books on its minds as it has applications in the hopper for ".movie" and ".app" as well. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, March 6, 9:27 AM Amazon (AMZN) says its studio unit will test a pilot for an original children’s series called Sara Solves It. The company notes it now has 12 pilots currently under development for its streaming service with user votes being the ultimate determination of which shows it will back for production. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 5, 1:02 PM Millennial Media (MM -4.8%) makes fresh post-IPO lows after Needham launches coverage with a Hold. While expecting Millennial to "continue to experience exceptionally strong growth over the next few years," the firm sees "emerging competition" limiting upside to current estimates. The report comes as one of those emerging rivals, Amazon (AMZN), rolls out a mobile ad API for Android apps offered in its Appstore. Amazon is already selling Kindle lock screen ads, and has reportedly considered making a mobile ad acquisition. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 5, 7:11 AM Google (GOOG) continues to build out a same-day delivery service called 'Google Shopping Express" to compete with Amazon Prime (AMZN), according to TechCrunch. The price of the service will reportedly be $10 to $15 less than Amazon Prime's $79 annual fee and will include same-day delivery from brick-and-mortar retail chains. 4 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, March 4, 6:41 AM Amazon (AMZN) is under increasing scrutiny in Germany over its treatment of temporary workers. Politicians have latched onto the issue and it could be part of the debate in national elections scheduled for later in the year. The end game: Issues over relations with labor unions eventually prompted Wal-Mart to exit the nation in 2006. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, March 4, 3:17 AM Wal-Mart (WMT) U.S. CEO Bill Simon is "anxious" to compete with Amazon's (AMZN) Marketplace for independent merchants, identifying the offering as the tech giant's "number one weapon." Wal-Mart launched its own Marketplace four years ago but it only has six outside retailers while Amazon has 2M. Other players ramping up their efforts include eBay (EBAY) and Google (GOOG). Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, March 1, 7:03 PM VMware (VMW) appears set to step up its battle with Amazon Web Services (AWS): the company is reportedly working on a solution that lets clients move private cloud workloads onto a VMware-owned cloud infrastructure. The report comes as sales of VMware's costly vCloud suite pick up among private and public cloud owners, and CEO Pat Gelsinger all but declares war on AWS, which is expected by Oppenheimer to produce $3.25B in 2013 sales. Also reportedly in the works is Project Zephyr, a public cloud that directly competes with AWS, Google, Microsoft, and Rackspace. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, March 1, 4:34 PM Amazon (AMZN) reportedly wants a big piece of the Big Apple: real-estate execs tell the WSJ Amazon is looking for 300K-500K sq. feet of Manhattan office space. The paper notes 500K sq. feet usually fits 2K-3K workers, and that Amazon currently has just 100K sq. feet in Manhattan. Last year, Amazon spent $1.16B to buy its sprawling downtown Seattle HQ. 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, February 26, 9:10 AM Amazon (AMZN) announces an exclusive content agreement with Sony Pictures which will see its streaming service be the exclusive online subscription destination for the FX Network show Justified. The deal continues a trend for Amazon of lining one-off deals with major media companies for popular shows. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, February 25, 10:50 AM Nook hardware: down and perhaps soon out. While Barnes & Noble (BKS +8.4%) jumps thanks to chairman Leonard Riggio's retail buyout offer, the NYT reports B&N's poor holiday season sales have led execs to believe "the company must move away" from hardware development in favor of content licensing. "They are not completely getting out of the hardware business, but they are going to lean a lot more on the comprehensive digital catalog of content," says a source. Amazon (AMZN +0.1%), which has been taking e-reader share from B&N, stands to benefit. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Consumer]
- Monday, February 25, 8:41 AM Amazon (AMZN) will take a decidedly different approach than Netflix to it original content series. The company plans to stream pilots submitted from independent sources and then solicit feedback from users before backing a series for development. The focus will also be in the comedy genre, instead of a drama show such as Netflix's well-received House of Cards. Look for Amazon to post the first pilots sometime in the next few months. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, February 22, 1:20 PM A 33% bandwidth price cut from Rackspace (RAX -2.1%) for cloud infrastructure and CDN services is hurting CDN leader Akamai (AKAM -2.1%) and data center colocation/interconnection firms Equinix (EQIX -1.1%) and InterXion (INXN -2.2%). Rackspace's cuts, which also include volume discounts for storage, are eye-opening in light of past remarks about competing against Amazon (AMZN -0.5%) and other cloud rivals in ways other than price. Rackspace's move follows major cuts (I, II) from Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, and a Q4 miss that featured slowing server growth. (Barron's) Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, February 21, 2:09 PM LivingSocial CEO Tim O'Shaughnessy refutes a PrivCo report claiming the #2 daily deals vendor's latest funding round featured "oppressive terms." He claims the deal involves a ~$1.5B valuation (that suggests AMZN's stake is worth around $450M) and doesn't require 10%+ dividend payments, and its liquidation preference is "nowhere near 4x." However, PrivCo's CEO stands by his firm's report, and calls O'Shaughnessy's comments misleading. GRPN +3%. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, February 21, 1:56 PM Google (GOOG +0.1%) roundup: 1) Eric Schmidt visited China to court local developers. Though Android has a dominant Chinese smartphone share, monetizing that usage has been tough, especially since many of those phones use rival search engines. 2) Google is reportedly talking with eyeglass vendor Warby Parker about making Google Glass, referred to by one critic as a "Segway on your face," more fashionable. The report follows a new demo video for Glass. 3) Ad spend on the revamped Google Shopping is 32.7% more effective than Amazon (AMZN) ads, according to CPC Strategy. (previous) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, February 21, 10:17 AM LivingSocial's new funding round was provided with "oppressive terms" and arrived with the company just days away from a Chapter 11 filing, PrivCo reports. The deal reportedly requires Groupon's (GRPN +5.2%) biggest rival to pay double-digit annual dividends, grants liquidation preferences of up to 4x the company's $110M debt load, and is meant to set up a sale by year's end. 29% owner Amazon (AMZN) is said to be among the investors. How does $AMZN prime go from like 25,000 titles in Dec/12 to like mid 30ks in March/13 and only pick up 1 of NFLX 200? Doesn't make sense. - View all 0 replies
