- Wednesday, February 20, 2:33 PM Groupon (GRPN -4.1%) slides after top rival LivingSocial states it has raised $110M in a new funding round, guaranteeing its near-term survival. Amazon (AMZN), which has a 29% stake in LivingSocial, disclosed in its 2012 10-K LivingSocial posted revenue of $536M (+114% Y/Y) and a net loss of $71M (exc. a $579M impairment charge) last year. Amazon valued its stake (the subject of a major write-down) at $52M, which implies a $179M valuation for the entire company. (previous) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 19, 9:28 AM Amazon (AMZN) announces it's launching a new entertainment collectibles store which will feature a wide range of film and TV memorabilia. The company appears to be looking to bring merchants over from eBay's site where the category is quite lively. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, February 19, 6:52 AM Amazon (AMZN) cuts off its relationship with a German security firm after a documentary aired last week in the nation highlighted the harsh treatment of temporary workers hired by the company. A flurry of calls to boycott Amazon followed the public television broadcast. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, February 15, 2:00 PM Amazon (AMZN) has launched its Redshift data warehousing service for AWS, trademark aggressive pricing and all. Business intelligence software firms SAP, IBM, Microstrategy (MSTR +3.4% - up thanks to Qlik), and Actuate (BIRT +0.8%) are among the launch partners. Interestingly, so is Informatica (INFA +1.2%) - though Redshift represents competition for Informatica's data warehousing solutions, the company is offering a subscription-based Redshift connector. Informatica and Teradata (TDC +0.2%) sold off when Redshift was first announced. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 15, 10:40 AM Democrats and the GOP are working together on a bill in Congress to resolve the online sales tax issue. The latest iteration of the bill looks likely to be finalized and sent to President Obama's desk this year. With online sales now repping more than 5% of all of retail sales, states will bring in significant revenue while larger Internet-based retailers will lose some pricing power. Though Amazon (AMZN -1.4%) is the obvious target to take a hit - that expectation could already be baked into its share price - and it could be smaller Internet shops such as Blue Nile (NILE +1.2%) or Overstock.com (OSTK +0.2%) which feel the pain. 4 Comments [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Friday, February 15, 9:09 AM First Adopter takes Morgan Stanley to task over the methodology used to forecast that the eBook market in the U.S. is larger than anticipated. The logical conclusion is that by asking consumers how many e-books they buy a month - instead of how many they buy a year - the total e-book demand numbers get inflated. If his take is correct, this week's rally in Amazon (AMZN) looks suspect. (Related on AMZN: Morgan Stanley's Ever-Changing Story) 1 Comment [Consumer, Tech]
- Friday, February 15, 3:37 AM Legislators yesterday introduced the Marketplace Fairness Act in the Senate to enable states to collect sales taxes for Internet transactions carried out in their jurisdictions. Many Republicans and major online retailers have long opposed such a tax but sentiment has changed after Amazon (AMZN) and GOP governors such as Chris Christie expressed support for a federal bill. 2 Comments [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Wednesday, February 13, 12:29 PM ChannelAdvisor's January data could be helping Amazon (AMZN +2.8%) rally: the firm's clients saw a 34.3% Y/Y increase in Amazon same-store sales, up from 29.8% in December. eBay's (EBAY +0.2%) growth came in at 18.8%, down from December's 22.2%. In a positive for Google (GOOG +0.1%), search ad-driven sales grew 1% after falling 18% in December thanks to a migration to Google Shopping. Shopping engine sales (inc. Google Shopping) rose 7.9%, down from December's 15.5%. SA contributor Paulo Santos, a long-time Amazon bear, argues Amazon benefited from favorable comps. 7 Comments [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 13, 10:14 AM Some Amazon (AMZN +2.8%) news: 1) Amazon and CBS have expanded their licensing deal to include Everybody Loves Raymond, the Star Trek franchise, and a slew of other CBS and Showtime-owned shows. The expansion comes 2 days after a deal was announced to show Under the Dome episodes to Prime Instant Video subs just 3 days after they air. 2) Amazon has met with Indian officials in an effort to change laws that prohibit the company from directly selling goods to local consumers. As Wal-Mart can vouch, this is easier said than done. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, February 12, 10:15 AM There's an investing lesson in here somewhere. Harris Interactive's 2013 Reputation Quotient survey shows Amazon (AMZN) moving past Apple as the country's reputation leader. Bank of America (BAC) retains a spot in the bottom 5 (along with HAL, GS, and AIG), but enjoyed the largest reputation rebound in 2012. Maybe of most interest are those dropping off the list of visible companies, including: UPS, KSS, and GIS. 4 Comments
- Monday, February 11, 5:45 PM A spinoff of Amazon Web Services (AWS) is "inevitable," declares Oppenheimer's Tim Horan: he cites Amazon's (AMZN) conflicts with potential AWS customers, the need for more scale, and the possibility of running AWS as a REIT among his reasons. The math Horan uses to argue AWS could be worth $101B in 2018 is questionable, but there's little doubt the cloud infrastructure giant would fetch a hefty IPO valuation. But are Jeff Bezos & co. willing to surrender control of a perceived crown jewel? (Macquarie estimates) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, February 11, 11:11 AM CBS (CBS -1.1%) strikes a unique agreement with Amazon (AMZN -1.5%) which will see the show Under the Dome move to Prime Instant Video after only three days of airing at the CBS website. Win-win? The deal is a major coup for Amazon by upping the relevancy of its streaming service, while CBS is well-protected because advertising rates are computed within the three-day window from the original broadcast. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, February 8, 1:57 PM U.S. e-commerce sales rose 15% in 2012 to $186B, says comScore - that's the strongest annual rate posted since the financial crisis. Q4 sales rose 14% in spite of holiday season lumpiness, fueled by strong demand for media, electronics, toys, and apparel. Meanwhile, eMarketer thinks global B2C e-commerce sales (harder to estimate) rose 21% in 2012 to $1.02T, driven by 33% Asia-Pac growth. Amazon (AMZN -27% 2012 sales growth) continues to gain share, and eBay (EBAY - 16% Q4 Marketplaces growth) is halting its share losses. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, February 7, 11:17 AM Amazon (AMZN) has at least temporarily lost the services of 3 important execs over the past year, the company discloses in its 2012 10-K. General counsel Michelle Wilson (parental leave), digital media chief Steven Kessel (sabbatical), and SVP of Worldwide Operations Marc Onetto (retirement) have left. Interestingly, Kessel and Onetto remain listed on the Officers & Directors page on Amazon's site. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, February 6, 9:23 AM Google (GOOG) has acquired Channel Intelligence, a provider of services that enable and track e-commerce activity for online retailers/marketers, from ICG (ICGE) for $125M in cash. Google Shopping services are a big part of CI's offerings. The deal expands Google's arsenal of services for lucrative e-commerce ad buyers, and does so at a time when the company is both trying to navigate a shift in marketing activity from Google Search to Google Shopping, and facing growing competition from Amazon (AMZN). ICGE +6.3%. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 5, 2:20 PM Some seasoned Amazon (AMZN +2.8%) watchers think third-party sellers on the site sell more by dollars than the company does itself. While CFO Tom Szkutal would only say on the firm's Q4 conference call (transcript) that third-party sellers increased their percentage of total units sold to 39% from 36% (Y/Y) last quarter, ChannelAdvisor is quick to note the company tend to sell low-ticket items while third-party sellers have a higher average ticket price.
