- Friday, February 8, 1:57 PM U.S. e-commerce sales rose 15% in 2012 to $186B, says comScore - that's the strongest annual rate posted since the financial crisis. Q4 sales rose 14% in spite of holiday season lumpiness, fueled by strong demand for media, electronics, toys, and apparel. Meanwhile, eMarketer thinks global B2C e-commerce sales (harder to estimate) rose 21% in 2012 to $1.02T, driven by 33% Asia-Pac growth. Amazon (AMZN -27% 2012 sales growth) continues to gain share, and eBay (EBAY - 16% Q4 Marketplaces growth) is halting its share losses. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, February 7, 11:17 AM Amazon (AMZN) has at least temporarily lost the services of 3 important execs over the past year, the company discloses in its 2012 10-K. General counsel Michelle Wilson (parental leave), digital media chief Steven Kessel (sabbatical), and SVP of Worldwide Operations Marc Onetto (retirement) have left. Interestingly, Kessel and Onetto remain listed on the Officers & Directors page on Amazon's site. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, February 6, 9:23 AM Google (GOOG) has acquired Channel Intelligence, a provider of services that enable and track e-commerce activity for online retailers/marketers, from ICG (ICGE) for $125M in cash. Google Shopping services are a big part of CI's offerings. The deal expands Google's arsenal of services for lucrative e-commerce ad buyers, and does so at a time when the company is both trying to navigate a shift in marketing activity from Google Search to Google Shopping, and facing growing competition from Amazon (AMZN). ICGE +6.3%. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 5, 2:20 PM Some seasoned Amazon (AMZN +2.8%) watchers think third-party sellers on the site sell more by dollars than the company does itself. While CFO Tom Szkutal would only say on the firm's Q4 conference call (transcript) that third-party sellers increased their percentage of total units sold to 39% from 36% (Y/Y) last quarter, ChannelAdvisor is quick to note the company tend to sell low-ticket items while third-party sellers have a higher average ticket price. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Sunday, February 3, 3:47 AM The FTC issued recommendations on Friday to beef up privacy on mobile devices, including that developers should incorporate do-not-track capabilities in apps and other software. While the proposals aren't binding, they carry the weight of policy for the likes of Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT). Underscoring the FTC's commitment to privacy, it has fined social-networking app Path $800K for collecting personal information on children. 30 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Friday, February 1, 1:56 PM On a day when Netflix (NFLX +1.4%) is premiering House of Cards to positive reviews, Amazon (AMZN +0.1%) announces it has scored exclusive streaming rights for Downton Abbey. Amazon's home page is currently sharing the news to customers in a rather conspicuous way. The e-commerce giant has been steadily growing (I, II) its arsenal of exclusive TV content. (children's show pilots) 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, January 31, 1:32 PM Though the iPad Mini launch helped Apple (AAPL) sell 22.9M iPads in calendar Q4, the company's tablet shipment share fell 810 bps Y/Y to 43.6%, per IDC. Samsung (SSNLF.PK), meanwhile, is estimated to have more than doubled its share to 15.1%. Amazon (AMZN), believed to have shipped 6M Kindle Fires, is given an 11.5% share (-440 bps Y/Y). Nexus 7 maker Asus is at 5.8% (+380 bps), and Barnes & Noble (BKS) at just 1.9% (-270 bps). IDC believes total shipments rose 75% Y/Y to 52.5M (equal to 58% of PC shipments), and is forecasting 172.4M for 2013. (previous) 40 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, January 31, 9:18 AM Amazon (AMZN) says it has begun production work on five new childrens pilots with a goal to eventually air them on its streaming services. That brings the total numbers of pilots in production for Amazon Studios as it moves from concept to content at a rapid pace. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, January 30, 12:41 PM Amazon (AMZN +5.2%) is off the AH highs it saw thanks to the margin improvement accompanying its Q4 miss and soft Q1 guidance, but is still up nicely. Deutsche is pleased gross profit (exc. forex) rose 44% Y/Y, and considers slowing unit growth a function of Amazon "choosing not to chase unprofitable retail units," and instead allowing 3rd parties to handle such items. The rally comes as Amazon announces it's building 3 new fulfillment centers in Texas, where it has begun collecting sales taxes. (more) (transcript) 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]

Premarket gainers: BIOC +20%. CPNO +18%. MGAM +15%. AVY +11%. CHK +11%. AMZN +9%. UIS +8%. ISIS +8%. GEVO +5%.
Losers: GOL -6%. WBSN -5%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Wednesday, January 30, 8:04 AM The Amazon (AMZN) bull case has pivoted to a story of margin expansion from revenue growth after the company surprised analysts with better-than-expected profit margins during Q4. A number of firms are out with price target increases, citing margin expansion as a major factor. PT hikes: Barclays to $260 from $245; JPMorgan to $333 from $245; Baird to $325 from $300; BofA to $315 from $300; Credit Suisse to $334 from $301. AMZN +8.3% premarket to $281.62. 9 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 30, 7:38 AM Deutsche Post might sell a unit of DHL in the U.S. to a retailer interested in topping off its "last mile" delivery service. A sale could also launch a more dramatic move into same-day delivery in key markets for the buyer. Though sources aren't talking about which company is in the mix, a deal price in the $100M range could draw in AMZN, WMT, ODP, SHLD, TGT, SPLS, or OMX. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 29, 6:34 PM More on Amazon: The Street is betting fulfillment spending growth (+36% Y/Y in Q4 to $2.26B) will slow in 2013: the CC featured questions about a slowdown, and whether having warehouses closer to consumers is lowering shipping costs. There was also a question about whether Amazon is letting 3rd-party sellers (40%+ unit growth) handle more low-margin sales. Amazon responded in part by noting sales of margin-compressing electronics were soft. Technology/content spending +56% Y/Y to $1.35B, thanks to AWS-related capex. 8 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Earnings]
- Tuesday, January 29, 6:16 PM Amazon (AMZN) now +9.3% AH in spite of its Q4 miss and light Q1 guidance. The earnings call (live blog) featured pointed questions about slowing paid unit growth (32% Y/Y vs 39% in Q3), but also positive comments about gross margin, which rose 340 bps Y/Y 24.1% (up from Q3's 180 bps increase). The fact 3rd-party sales accounted for 39% of paid units (up from 36% a year ago) helped, as did a 67% Y/Y increase in "Other" North American revenue (dominated by AWS) to $769M. Active customer accounts surpassed 200M (up from Q3's 188M). EBAY +0.7%. 5 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Earnings]

Growth in the company's Electronics segment outpaced Media segment sales. Free cash flow decreased 81% to $395M for the trailing twelve month period compared to a year ago with real estate outlays factoring in. For Q1, the company sees $15.0B-$16.6B in revenue and expects profit to fall in a range of -$285M to $65M. A conference call is scheduled for 5:00 EST. AMZN changes direction, now +3.2% AH. Somporn Suksi: I'm reading estimates (B. Williams) that about 2/3 of the sales were minis. If so that really dispels the whole "it's not selling" story. -
