- Friday, April 26, 1:29 PM Amazon (AMZN -6.9%) is giving back most of its 2013 gains as the Street decides a revenue miss and light profit guidance outweigh a still-improving gross margin. Slowing growth and a lack of profits for the international ops is a concern for many, even if forex is a factor - international media sales rose only 1% Y/Y, though other merchandise sales rose 28%. On the earnings call, management admitted (echoing eBay) "there is some [international] softness from a macro standpoint," while adding Amazon is investing heavily in China, Italy, and Spain. Nomura is staying bullish, touting the fact total growth is holding steady. 12 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 25, 7:28 PM Amazon's (AMZN) Q1 Y/Y paid unit growth was 30%, the company discloses in its CC; that's down from Q4's 32% and Q3's 39%, but still above rev. growth of 22%. 3rd-party sellers (some of them upset over fee hikes) made up 40% of unit sales vs. 39% in Q4 and 41% in Q3; they've been a major source of gross margin growth. Digital content sales growth slowed down, leading physical units to rise over 300 bps Y/Y as a % of total units. Forex expected to have a 275 bps impact on Q2 rev. growth. North America had a $457M op. profit in Q1, international a $16M op. loss. Active customer accounts rose to 209M+ from 200M+ in Q4. AMZN now -3% AH. (Q1: I, II) 4 Comments [Tech, Consumer, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, April 25, 4:31 PM More on Amazon: Gross margin +260 bps Y/Y to 26.6% (it rose 340 bps Y/Y in Q4 to 24.1%). North America sales growth up to 26% Y/Y in Q1 (23% in Q4), international down to +16% (21% in Q4), hurt by forex. 58/42 split between NA and international sales. Media sales +7% (+8% in Q4) and 31% of total, electronics/other merchandise +28% (same as Q4) and 64% of total. "Other" NA revenue (mostly AWS) +64% to $750M. Fulfillment spend +39% (+36% in Q4), marketing +32% (+43% in Q4), technology/content +46% (+56% in Q4) - all 3 rates are still soundly above rev. growth. Free cash flow for last 12 months is $1.58B (exc. HQ purchase). AMZN +2.2% AH. (PR) 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Earnings]
- Thursday, April 25, 4:05 PM Amazon.com (AMZN): Q1 EPS of $0.18 beats by $0.09. Revenue of $16.07B (+22% Y/Y) misses by $90M. Expects Q2 revenue of $14.5B-$16.2B vs. $15.9B consensus. Expects Q2 operating income of -$340M to +$10M; EPS consensus is at $0.22. Shares +1.4% AH. CC at 5PM ET (webcast). (PR) 16 Comments [Tech, Earnings, Breaking News, Consumer, On the Move]

- Tuesday, January 29, 6:34 PM More on Amazon: The Street is betting fulfillment spending growth (+36% Y/Y in Q4 to $2.26B) will slow in 2013: the CC featured questions about a slowdown, and whether having warehouses closer to consumers is lowering shipping costs. There was also a question about whether Amazon is letting 3rd-party sellers (40%+ unit growth) handle more low-margin sales. Amazon responded in part by noting sales of margin-compressing electronics were soft. Technology/content spending +56% Y/Y to $1.35B, thanks to AWS-related capex. 8 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Earnings]
- Tuesday, January 29, 6:16 PM Amazon (AMZN) now +9.3% AH in spite of its Q4 miss and light Q1 guidance. The earnings call (live blog) featured pointed questions about slowing paid unit growth (32% Y/Y vs 39% in Q3), but also positive comments about gross margin, which rose 340 bps Y/Y 24.1% (up from Q3's 180 bps increase). The fact 3rd-party sales accounted for 39% of paid units (up from 36% a year ago) helped, as did a 67% Y/Y increase in "Other" North American revenue (dominated by AWS) to $769M. Active customer accounts surpassed 200M (up from Q3's 188M). EBAY +0.7%. 5 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Earnings]
- Tuesday, January 29, 4:13 PM More on Amazon's (AMZN) Q4: The company swung back from its Q3 loss as North America sales rose 23% Y/Y to $12.175B and International sales gained 21% to reach $9.093B. Growth in the company's Electronics segment outpaced Media segment sales. Free cash flow decreased 81% to $395M for the trailing twelve month period compared to a year ago with real estate outlays factoring in. For Q1, the company sees $15.0B-$16.6B in revenue and expects profit to fall in a range of -$285M to $65M. A conference call is scheduled for 5:00 EST. AMZN changes direction, now +3.2% AH. - Thursday, January 24, 2:02 PM Overstock.com (OSTK +8.1%) surges after reporting Q4 revenue of $342M (+9% Y/Y, the highest growth rate in years) and EPS of $0.37 (up from -$0.15 in Q4 '11). EPS was lifted by a 170 bps Y/Y increase in gross margin to 17.9%, and a 4% drop in G&A/technology spending to $32.7M. Average order size rose 15% Y/Y to $132. Bigger peers Amazon (AMZN +1.7%) and eBay (EBAY +2.3%) are also higher. (slides) 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 15, 2012, 2:48 PM Qualcomm (QCOM) thinks it can grow its revenue and EPS at a 10%+ rate for the next 5 years, CEO Paul Jacobs states at his company's analyst day. The mobile chip/IP giant also forecast 3G/4G connections will grow to 2.7B in 2016 from 800M in 2011, fueled by emerging markets. Ahead of the meeting, Citi claimed Amazon (AMZN) will launch its rumored smartphone in June, and rely on Qualcomm's MSM8960 baseband/app processor. It also thinks there's upside to FY13 chip shipment forecasts, should Qulacomm maintain emerging market share. (slides - 11MB PDF) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 2:14 PM Richly-valued Rackspace (RAX -5.4%) is selling off after delivering a decent (but not spectacular) Q3 report (I, II) - shares are still up strongly from July levels. Rackspace noted on its earnings call it's seeing healthy early interest in its OpenStack cloud infrastructure solutions, whose scalability help Rackspace better compete with Amazon Web Services (AWS), and that it has led to "conversations with large enterprise customers that we just weren't having a year ago." Rackspace is hoping its service quality and user control will help counter Amazon's pricing edge. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 7:08 PM Amazon (AMZN) was as secretive as ever during its Q3 call (webcast/slides). No comment on which European markets are weak, and no comment on the impact of sales taxes (it now collects on over 50% of sales). Amazon also dodged an amusing question about whether it's made a "philosophical" decision to keep running near breakeven. But it did note paid unit growth was 39% Y/Y, and active customer accounts rose by 8M Q/Q to 188M. Gross margin was 25.2%, down a bit from Q2's 9-year high of 26.1%. Shares -0.9% AH - like Apple, some bad news was priced in. (more) 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer, Earnings]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 4:27 PM More on Amazon: Q4 revenue guidance is below a $22.8B consensus. Q4 operating income (inc. stock compensation) expected to be anywhere from -$490M to +$310M vs. +$260M in year-ago period. North American revenue +33% Y/Y (includes web services), international only +20% (would be +27% if not for forex). Media sales +11%, other merchandise +36%. Headcount rose by 12.3K Q/Q to 81.4K, fulfillment expenses +36% Y/Y, technology/content expenses +55%. AMZN now -2.7% AH. (PR) 10 Comments [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
