- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 9:50 AM As part of its efforts to ramp its mobile ad business (and thus better monetize its Kindle line), Amazon (AMZN) has "kicked the tires on a few mobile-ad companies," AdAge reports. One of those companies is said to be JumpTap, one of the largest independent mobile ad networks. It's added Amazon has hired ex-Microsoft mobile marketing chief Jamie Wells to head its ad sales efforts. Millennial Media (MM +3.2%) appears to be getting a lift from AdAge's report. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Monday, March 19, 2012, 5:15 PM More on Amazon/Kiva: Kiva has been growing at an 80% clip thanks to an innovative robot/software solution that automates "the process of picking, packing and shipping" products. Founder Mick Mountz boasts Kiva's solution, which has an average price of $5M, can handle 2x-4x as many orders/hour as a traditional approach. One unanswered question is the extent to which Amazon will support Kiva customers such as Staples, Gap, Saks, and Walgreen. AMZN now +0.1% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, March 19, 2012, 4:54 PM Amazon (AMZN) -1.1% AH after agreeing to buy privately-held Kiva Systems, which makes robotic technology for warehouse shelf and pallet systems, for $775M in cash. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, February 2, 2012, 1:33 PM Amazon (AMZN) has acquired TeachStreet, an online marketplace linking class instructors and teachers with would-be students. TeachStreet writes on its blog that it's shutting down and will become part of AmazonLocal, the e-commerce giant's daily deals aggregation product. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 10:44 AM Quick take on Research In Motion (RIMM) speculation: One overlooked possibility regarding the Amazon (AMZN) rumors is that the company was interested in acquiring RIM for its network operation centers (NOCs), which accelerate content in a manner similar to its Silk browser, and could potentially bolster its booming web services business. The NOCs, which many want turned into a separate business (I, II), may be RIM's most valuable asset at this point. Comment! [Tech, M&A, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 6:18 PM The report that RIM nixed takeover queries from Amazon (AMZN) and others only confirms that RIMM management is "ignoring both reality and the need to act as shareholder fiduciaries," Eric Savitz reacts. "I’m actually not sure what is more shocking: the idea that Amazon was interested in buying RIM, or the fact that RIM cut them off and said no." 11 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 6:11 PM Research In Motion (RIMM) +7.2% AH after Reuters reports the company turned down takeover overtures from Amazon (AMZN) and other potential buyers because it prefers to fix its problems on its own. Amazon reportedly hired an investment bank this summer to review a potential merger with RIM, but it didn't make a formal offer. 6 Comments [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 9, 2011, 1:55 PM Amazon (AMZN) has acquired Yap, a privately-owned developer of voice recognition software for mobile devices. Expect Yap's technology to turn up on a Kindle Fire at some point, as Amazon attempts to provide an alternative to Apple's (AAPL) Siri and Google's (GOOG) Android Voice Search app. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, November 8, 2011, 4:27 AM H-P (HPQ) is looking to sell the webOS mobile platform it obtained when it bought Palm last year for $1.2B, Reuters reports, although H-P is unlikely to make back its money as the software hasn't received significant investment in over a year. Those who may be interested include Amazon (AMZN) and Research In Motion (RIMM). 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, October 13, 2011, 8:24 PM The sale is off, say the content-focused owners of video hub Hulu - including NWS, DIS and CMCSA - because of its "unique and compelling strategic value" to each of them. Most bids from the likes of AMZN, DISH and GOOG didn't exceed the $2B owners thought they could get in an IPO last year, and new efforts like the $7.99/month Hulu Plus have them thinking there's value ahead. (previously on Hulu) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, October 10, 2011, 4:52 AM Yahoo (YHOO) has withdrawn from the auction to buy Hulu as it focuses on its own problems, the WSJ reports. Those still in the running comprise Dish (DISH), Amazon (AMZN) and Google (GOOG), with the latter offering over $2B. However, Hulu's owners still may decide not to sell. 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, September 19, 2011, 8:48 AM Though a new round of bids should arrive next week, Hulu's sale is reportedly in jeopardy, thanks to differences over the video site's selling price and content rights, as well as rumored bidder Yahoo's (YHOO) ongoing turmoil. Other parties believed to be courting Hulu include GOOG, AMZN, DTV, and DISH. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 3:43 PM Peter Kafka confirms the Financial Times' report that the formal bidding for Hulu is down to AMZN, YHOO, and DISH. However, Kafka also claims Google (GOOG) is interested in making a bigger deal than the one Hulu's owners have been trying to swing - perhaps for "more content, for a longer period of time," and at a higher price. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, August 31, 2011, 5:38 PM Business Insider claims six companies have made informal bids for Hulu, with most coming at the upper end of a range of $500M-$2B. GOOG, AMZN, and YHOO are considered among the most interested parties, while AAPL and MSFT declined to make bids. One source claims Yahoo's offer could be torpedoed by its board. (previously) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, August 25, 2011, 11:51 AM Verizon (VZ) is stepping up its efforts to become a leading player in cloud services: Big Red is acquiring CloudSwitch, a developer of software that makes it easier for companies to move applications to cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AMZN), Microsoft's (MSFT) Azure, and Verizon's own Terremark offerings. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, August 22, 2011, 8:19 AM The WSJ reports initial bids for Hulu, which recently put itself on sale, are due by Wednesday, with GOOG, YHOO, AMZN, and DTV among the likely bidders. One source puts likely offers in the range of $500M-$2B, but "a person close to Hulu" says its board is hoping the site will sell for "a few billion dollars." Comment! [Tech, M&A]
