- Friday, January 25, 5:17 PM Amazon (AMZN +3.8%) surged to new highs ahead of Tuesday's Q4 report: shares are now up 27% from where they stood going into the Q3 report. Solid numbers from eBay, Google, and Overstock have heightened expectations, and so have reports of a decent holiday season. Investors could feel let down if Amazon further delays profit growth for the sake of long-term investments: the Street is now expecting a 65% increase in operating cash flow in 2013 to $10.68/share (per Bloomberg). 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Consumer]
- Thursday, January 24, 2:02 PM Overstock.com (OSTK +8.1%) surges after reporting Q4 revenue of $342M (+9% Y/Y, the highest growth rate in years) and EPS of $0.37 (up from -$0.15 in Q4 '11). EPS was lifted by a 170 bps Y/Y increase in gross margin to 17.9%, and a 4% drop in G&A/technology spending to $32.7M. Average order size rose 15% Y/Y to $132. Bigger peers Amazon (AMZN +1.7%) and eBay (EBAY +2.3%) are also higher. (slides) 2 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, January 7, 8:15 AM Shares of Amazon (AMZN) move up 2.1% in premarket trading after Morgan Stanley rings up an upgrade to Overweight on the company. The investment firm cites "international opportunities" to justify its lush $325 price target on Amazon. 10 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 12:48 PM Texas Instruments (TXN +3.8%) is up after providing a guidance update that's being received favorably in light of industry and company-specific issues. During its update call, TI noted the wireless processor/connectivity business it's exiting will post a Q4 loss on revenue of ~$200M, and that those sales should be gone by 2014. Computing, industrial, and telecom infrastructure chip demand is also weak, though console and e-reader demand is healthy - that last bit could be a positive for AMZN and BKS. Chip stocks are outperforming (SOXX +2%). (Audi deal) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 3:32 PM Data warehousing plays Teradata (TDC -3.5%) and Informatica (INFA -1.8%) are lower after Amazon Web Services (AMZN) announces Redshift, a cloud-based service for analyzing giant data sets. AWS' trademark low pricing (less than $1K/TB/year) is included, as is a promise to deliver huge performance gains and handle a variety of management tasks. Though the devil may be in the details, Redshift is bound to unsettle an industry accustomed to 6 and 7-figure deals. Flipboard, NASA, and Netflix are among the early testers. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, November 26, 2012, 3:16 PM The first Cyber Monday sales figures are pretty encouraging. IBM estimates early sales rose 24% Y/Y, and ChannelAdvisor claims its client sales via Amazon (AMZN +1.4%) and eBay (EBAY +5%) are up 52% and 57% Y/Y, respectively. IBM and comScore have already published strong figures for online Black Friday sales, as surging mobile activity helps boost demand, perhaps at the expense of traditional retailers. (holiday season forecast) 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 2:14 PM Richly-valued Rackspace (RAX -5.4%) is selling off after delivering a decent (but not spectacular) Q3 report (I, II) - shares are still up strongly from July levels. Rackspace noted on its earnings call it's seeing healthy early interest in its OpenStack cloud infrastructure solutions, whose scalability help Rackspace better compete with Amazon Web Services (AWS), and that it has led to "conversations with large enterprise customers that we just weren't having a year ago." Rackspace is hoping its service quality and user control will help counter Amazon's pricing edge. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 4:02 PM Groupon (GRPN -7.8%) closes with big losses. The Street is likely worried about the depressing performance of top rival LivingSocial, something that just forced 29% owner Amazon (AMZN -2.2%) to take a big write-down. In its Q3 10-Q, Amazon noted LivingSocial posted an operating loss of $69M in Q3 on revenue of $124M. Moreover, Amazon now gives LivingSocial a valuation of just $325M, 94% below the $5.7B valuation granted in a Dec. '11 funding round. Groupon, which reports on Nov. 8, is currently valued at $2.66B. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, October 26, 2012, 9:57 AM Amazon (AMZN +4.5%) has done a complete about-face after missing Q3 estimates and issuing soft Q4 guidance (I, II). The Street priced in some worries ahead of time, and could be taking kindly to healthy customer account growth and third-party merchant activity. Nomura's Brian Nowak, who has been bullish for a while, is pleased Amazon's gross margin rose 180 bps Y/Y (albeit while falling Q/Q), but is concerned about still-soaring fulfillment expenses. Overstock (OSTK +6.7%) and eBay (EBAY +1.4%) are also up. (transcript) 46 Comments [Tech, Consumer, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 4:27 PM More on Amazon: Q4 revenue guidance is below a $22.8B consensus. Q4 operating income (inc. stock compensation) expected to be anywhere from -$490M to +$310M vs. +$260M in year-ago period. North American revenue +33% Y/Y (includes web services), international only +20% (would be +27% if not for forex). Media sales +11%, other merchandise +36%. Headcount rose by 12.3K Q/Q to 81.4K, fulfillment expenses +36% Y/Y, technology/content expenses +55%. AMZN now -2.7% AH. (PR) 10 Comments [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 4:18 PM More on Amazon (AMZN): Q3 loss includes a $0.37 per share hit from LivingSocial related to impairment. Product revenue +23.1% Y/Y to $11.55B. Service revenue +51% Y/Y to $2.26B Company expects Q4 net sales of $20.25B-$22.75B. Shares -6.5% AH. Conference call at 5:00 ET. (PR) 9 Comments [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 3:55 PM Amazon (AMZN -2.5%) is closing with losses ahead of tomorrow's Q3 report after Barclays cut estimates, citing slowing revenue growth. Though still taking share from e-commerce and bricks & mortar rivals alike, Amazon has been struggling to deal with Europe's macro and forex headwinds, and now also has U.S. sales tax collections to contend with. Some concerns are priced in: shares are down 12% from their Oct. 4 close. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 18, 2012, 10:39 AM Amazon (AMZN) roundup: 1) Bloomberg reports Amazon is in talks to buy Brazilian bookseller Saraiva. Saraiva, which currently has a market cap of $356M, is both a publisher and retailer of books (online and via physical stores). The report appears to be pressuring MercadoLibre (MELI -3.5%), which has already fallen on worries Amazon will enter Brazil. 2) The WSJ observes Amazon is struggling to make its publishing efforts a success in the face of boycotts from many booksellers. (earlier: I, II) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, M&A, Consumer]
- Monday, October 8, 2012, 11:52 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS +3%) CEO William Lynch feels good about the bookseller's ability to grow in the tablet market, saying preorders for the latest Nook devices are the highest he has seen. Lynch says there can be more than one winner in tablets, and BKS will have more holiday distribution at Target and Wal-Mart than ever - two huge channels that aren't carrying Amazon's Kindle. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, September 21, 2012, 5:47 PM MercadoLibre (MELI -3.4%) closed lower after Stifel (Sell) argued once again (previous) Amazon (AMZN) is planning to enter the Brazilian e-commerce market. Brazil accounted for nearly half of MercadoLibre's Q2 revenue, with sales growing at a 36% Y/Y clip. Also, Deutsche launched coverage with a Hold, declaring shares "fairly valued" at current levels. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, September 7, 2012, 11:49 AM Apple (AAPL +0.6%), Google (GOOG +1.3%), and Amazon (AMZN +2.8%) have two things in common: 1) They're at each others' throats. 2) They're making new highs today, rising even as PC-centric names fall on Intel's warning. Amazon's gains come as the Street mostly gives a thumbs-up to its Kindle refresh, citing its potential to boost Amazon's content ecosystem. Henry Blodget is taking a moment to gloat about his infamous 1998 $400 target (now a split-adjusted $67). (more on AMZN) 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move]

$BKS says it will offer $GOOG's Google Play apps on its Nook. Would that make you buy a Nook? Is this a threat to $AMZN's Kindle business? - View all 14 replies
