oops, I meant Profit margins instead of Sales. Reply10 Ways the Financial Meltdown Impacts Tech [view article]
As for the last point of weakness, I am not sure in regards to small-cap Tech, but large-cap Tech, relative to other sectors in the S&P 500, have the most cash on hand and least amount of debt, which seems like a very positive sector to be in at times when liquidity is strained and debt-burden areas are going to be on everyone's minds.Large-cap Tech, aside of Consumer Staples, have been showing double-digit earnings growth, cash flow/EBIT/and Sales margin improvements. From a macro perspective, Tech is also one of the top sectors whose revenue stream benefits from foreign exposure, so a weakening dollar benefits the sector. Reply

RIMM will see better days next month. This name will not stay down for long. Reply10 Ways the Financial Meltdown Impacts Tech [view article]
The author makes excellent points, although I think that one possibility that I do not see addressed is a possible increase in internet advertising (both website based, and social networking sites) as marketing budgets shrink, and these departments look for more affordable ways to reach their target audience. excellent views ,many thanks for sharing it with us. Do you have any thoughts on PAYX? I am waiting for CSCO to trade below 20$ ,am I too greedy ? Reply10 Ways the Financial Meltdown Impacts Tech [view article]
Excellent points to consider. I wonder how it will effect all the small mom & pop businesses that deal in antiques, collectibles, homemade items, etc. that have been investing in their own websites in lieu of eBay. I can see an upside in consumers aquiring these cheaper, used and homespun goods. But a downside in higher end luxury collectibles. Also, those venturing out on their own may be less likely to want to plunk down the money involved to run their own sites while they grow. At any rate, this is certainly going to effect online sales venues one way or another, my own included.Reply

No kidding? What "genius" do we owe the pleasure of thanking for this golden tidbit of information? Oh! Lehman Brothers... I hear there are several $$$billions of their money trapped in London. Perhaps they should shop at Harrods instead. Reply10 Ways the Financial Meltdown Impacts Tech [view article]

ps. I would, btw, look at other segments beyond books as well, as I extrapolate out a decade. ReplyMitra
Amazon: Will It Kindle Vertical Integration? [view article]
It is available on Kindle as of this morning.Kozak, Yes, there is a lot of truth to you observation that traditional book readers are a declining segment. However, notice the "segmentation&quo... of the above post. I think, if you look at specific segments, there are exceptions. And, Amazon, being a great merchandiser, understands segmentation very well.

Amazon: Will It Kindle Vertical Integration? [view article]
With the ever growing competition to fill our appetite for information and entertainment in an era of ever shrinking time and proliferation of passive and free sources, books in print or electronic forms will be in a secular decline at least in the western world. China, India and other emerging markets with its expanding literate class might stem this trend but with the low barrier to entry for electronic delivery of books, they will be walled off for the likes of Amazon.com by regional dominant players. Growth of AMZN's books part of the biz will grow only to the extent of the wilting and consolidation of competitors like Barnes & Noble, Borders etc. but regarless of the sophistication, convenience and empowering tools of delivery, they may not make much difference. Think how many listen to "books on tape" rather than their ipod or blather of radio talk show while commuting to work? Those inclined to reflective consumption of knowledge is an ever shrinking market segment so don't be drunk on the kool-aid of AMZN PR or CIti's Mahoney with their wild estimates of Kindle's potential. I wish AMZN will temper such efforts so as not to side track its true strengths as a formidable juggernaut that it is as a category killer in online merchandising. Nice article. There's one irony that should be mentioned, though - "Entrepreneur Journeys" is not available on the Kindle! I was hoping to download a sample to my KIndle to check it out... Reply
