- Friday, May 31, 12:37 PM Fickle teenagers strike again: After teen-oriented retailers Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF +1.8%), Aeropostale (ARO +1.3%), and American Eagle Outfitters (AEO +2.1%) all posted disappointing results amid slumping same-store sales for the first part of the year, the question of the day in the sub-sector is what exactly do teens like? Though Urban Outfitter (URBN +1.6%), privately-held Forever 21, Vera Bradley (VRA -0.6%), and Lululemon (LULU +0.7%) all scored well in surveys and analyst polling - it was Nike (NKE +0.6%) that rated as the demographic's strongest preference. It's not a bad trend for Dick's Sporting Good (DKS +0.7%) either with 17% of the sporting good giant's sales tied to the swoosh. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 31, 8:45 AM A below par reading on personal spending for April was affected by lower gas prices and home heating bills and isn't a biting indictment on retail spending (AEO, ANF, ARO, BBBY, BBY, BJ, CHS, COH, COST, DG, DLTR, GPS, HD, JCP, JWN, KSS, LOW, LTD, M, NDN, NKE, ODP, PIR, PLCE, RSH, SKS, SPLS, TGT, TJX, URBN, WMT, WSM, ZLC), according to economists. Auto sales also cooled off just a bit in April which had an impact. So far, retail trends have been largely favorable in May as the height of the spring selling season shifted a few weeks later. 4 Comments [Consumer]

Comp sales in the nation were +40% despite difficult inventory issues. 3) On share buybacks, the retailer says it will remain consistent with past policy - but will have a goal of maintaining a cash position of $350M. 4) Analysts take a pass on asking about the recent flap over the stance of CEO Michael Jefferies on plus sizes. - Friday, May 24, 7:37 AM Retail reporter Sapna Maheshwari delivers a sobering thought on Abercrombie & Fitch's (ANF) sub-par quarter (SSS -15%). She notes the rehashed "fat" comments from CEO Michael Jeffries didn't go viral until after the reporting period. The exec was trying to highlight the aspirational aspect of the ANF brand, but made a bit of a mess of it all. The conference call at 7:30 AM EST could be interesting. ANF -7.5% premarket. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 24, 7:23 AM More on Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF): The company was selling, but not as many people were buying in Q1. Comparable store sales fell 15% including direct-to-consumer sales with Hollister off 18% and the Abercrombie & Fitch brand falling 13%. Sales weakened at the end of the quarter even with improving weather patterns. The retailer says "external pressures" led to significant inventory issues during the period. Full-year EPS guidance is taken down to $3.15-$3.25 and Q2 is adjusted to $0.28-$0.33. ANF -7.5% premarket. (PR) 1 Comment [Consumer, Earnings]
- Friday, May 24, 7:06 AM Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF): Q1 EPS of -$0.09 misses by $0.04. Revenue of $838.8M (-9% Y/Y) misses by $102.86M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Wednesday, May 22, 1:43 PM Google just released a new tool under Google Trends to rank the highest search terms per category. Though it's not quite actionable advice quite yet, a lot of scientific abstracts have been making a solid case that in some industries a correlation between Google searches and stock prices exists. The trick is separating negative searches from positive ones. The most searched fashion brands on Google: 1) Forever 21 2) American Eagle Outfitters (AEO +2.3%) 3) Hennes & Mauritz (HMRZF.PK) 4) Tiffany (TIF +0.2%) 5) Hollister (ANF +1.2%). 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 22, 1:25 PM The list of groups Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF +1.6%) has offended recently just got a little longer after a judge says he will contemplate an injunction against the retailer for discriminating against the handicapped. A lawsuit filed by a group of customers alleges the retail chain limits access to shoppers in wheelchairs as it caters to its targeted younger svelte crowd. (Previous: No plus-sized lines for ANF) 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, May 17, 8:40 AM Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) CEO Michael Jeffries continues to try to defuse the backlash from rehashed comments a 2006 interview when he indicated the retailer went after the "cool" kids at the exclusion of plus-sized consumers. Though the exec went a bit too far in promoting the aspirational aspect of the Abercrombie brand, retail analysts thinks the effect from the resurfaced flap could be neutral on sales as the sound and fury recedes. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 15, 1:51 PM Perhaps take it with a grain of salt, but a surprising 44% of consumers responding to a survey on the impact of an online sales tax say they will buy less items online if the legislation is passed into law. The number rises to 75% for the 18-year to 25-year old demographic (ZUMZ, ANF, URBN, ARO, BKE, VRA). Though seemingly a bad development for Amazon (AMZN -0.6%) and eBay (EBAY), many retail analysts thinks those shopping habits are pretty hard to break. 5 Comments [Consumer]
