Abercrombie & Fitch Co. - Friday, May 17, 8:40 AM Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) CEO Michael Jeffries continues to try to defuse the backlash from rehashed comments a 2006 interview when he indicated the retailer went after the "cool" kids at the exclusion of plus-sized consumers. Though the exec went a bit too far in promoting the aspirational aspect of the Abercrombie brand, retail analysts thinks the effect from the resurfaced flap could be neutral on sales as the sound and fury recedes. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 15, 1:51 PM Perhaps take it with a grain of salt, but a surprising 44% of consumers responding to a survey on the impact of an online sales tax say they will buy less items online if the legislation is passed into law. The number rises to 75% for the 18-year to 25-year old demographic (ZUMZ, ANF, URBN, ARO, BKE, VRA). Though seemingly a bad development for Amazon (AMZN -0.6%) and eBay (EBAY), many retail analysts thinks those shopping habits are pretty hard to break. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 15, 10:59 AM Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF +0.2%) continues to feel heat over its decision not to carry larger sizes and as caddy comments by CEO Mike Jefferies from years ago on the retailer's target customer are rehashed. If it's true there is no such thing as bad publicity, investors can take some comfort in the huge spike in Google search queries during May for "Abercrombie." (Google Trends chart: ANF vs. AEO, ARO, URBN) Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 10, 7:42 AM Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) draws fire from critics for targeting what CEO Michael Jeffries calls "attractive, all-American" customers of skinnier sizes. The retailer doesn't offer XL-sized clothing despite the increasing focus on the category from other rivals. The development appears to have made the company a hot topic of discussion. (Google Trends chart) Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 7, 12:08 PM Shares of Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF +6%) get a little bump from a Goldman Sachs upgrade to Hold off of a dour Sell rating. There is a general feeling amongst retail watchers that the company may have righted the ship with Hollister. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 7, 9:29 AM Retail sales numbers for April could be a tad weaker than expected after weekly reports from Redbook and ICSC-Goldman on chain store sales both came in a bit below expectations. Retail read-through: Weather and swings in gas prices seemed to impact store traffic to malls (KSS, DDS, JCP, LTD, GPS, ANF, AEO) and supercenters (WMT, COST TGT), but economists think consumer confidence on the high end (TIF, RL, SKS, COH, BBBY) just might be on the rise. Also, with online sales de-emphasized in the weekly chain store reports - Internet whiz kids Macy's (M) and Urban Outfitters (URBN) could still outperform even if mall parking lots aren't packed. 1 Comment [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Monday, April 29, 7:50 AM Analysts at Macquarie believe Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) will be able to expand its margins as the retailer's new strategies start to pay off. The firm upgrades ANF to Outperform from Neutral. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, April 22, 11:33 AM It smells like teen spending, according to data from a Piper Jaffray survey. Improvements in both current fashion spending by teenagers and an intention to spend more in the future cuts across income levels and genders. If the spending upturn pans out, it's good news for the sector. Teen-focused: Aeropostale (ARO -2.8%), Rue 21 (RUE -2.1%), Zumiez (ZUMZ -1.8%), Wet Seal (WTSLA -2.6%), Vera Bradley (VRA -0.9%), Body Central (BODY -1.5%), Buckle (BKE -1.7%), American Eagle Outfitter (AEO -0.2%), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF -1.2%), Express (EXPR -1.8%). (full Piper Jaffray report) Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, April 12, 11:47 AM Retailers start to feverishly launch and promote their spring lines after the weather in March gave them a very small window to work with. Though retail sales came in decidedly sluggish last month, on-trend firms such as Zumiez (ZUMZ -0.6%) and Limited Brands (LTD +0.8%) bucked the trend neatly. Watch Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF -2.1%), Francesca's Holdings (FRAN +1%), and Urban Outfitters (URBN -0.6%) in April tips Janney Capital Markets. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 2, 12:19 PM Barclays initiates coverage on a number of major retailers, lining up Limited Brands (LTD +2.1%), American Eagle Outfitters (AEO +2.9%), and Gap (GPS +1.5%) with Overweight ratings. The investment firm is less sure about Fossil (FOSL +0.8%), Finish Line (FINL +1.1%), and Aeropostale (ARO +0.1%) - all rated as Equal Weight - while Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF -0.2%) looks unappealing and is tagged at Underweight. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, April 1, 2:40 PM Analysts think the colder March weather this year could hurt retailers that sell clothing to kids and teenagers as family shopping takes a backseat. Though the spring selling season could still pick up steam in April despite the slow start, retailers such as American Eagle (AEO -1.4%), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF +0.1%), Gap (GPS -0.8%), Aeropostale (ARO -3.2%), and Children's Place (PLCE +0.1%) that depend on mall traffic have a lot of ground to make up. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 19, 12:32 PM Teen-oriented retailers trade weak with negative news out on Lululemon and Kohl's tipping sentiment in the sub-sector. Decliners: American Eagle Outfitters (AEO -2.9%), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF -3.3%), Aeropostale (AEO -2.9%), Zumiez (ZUMZ -2.7%), The Bucke (BKE -2%), Urban Outfitters (URBN -2%). 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 13, 12:39 PM The Forensic Accounting ETF (FLAG) rolls out new names given "A" and "F" ratings after a check of the books. Those getting top scores are LMT, ANF, and BRCM, while those failing are HD, F, COL, and TRIP. "Home Depot's revenue increase of 6% doesn't justify the stock's 23+ P/E ratio ... Ford has high and increasing cost of goods sold putting pressure on margins." 5 Comments
- Wednesday, March 13, 10:22 AM Heard during Abercrombie & Fitch's (ANF +1.4%) presentation at the BofA Consumer & Retail Conference: 1) The overall tone is positive from execs as they hone in on the prospects for the international side of the business. 2) U.S. store closures are called a strategic initiative by the retailer with online becoming more of a focus. 3) Brand awareness is growing in Asia, in particular in Hong Kong. Comparable-store sales in Chinese stores are showing improvement. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 6, 1:43 PM A number of retailers are feeling the heat after American Eagles Outfitters reports a rough start to 2013. Though the retailer blamed weather for its downbeat outlook for the current quarter, retail analysts can't help but wonder if teenager clothing is falling on the wrong side of the discretionary vs. non-discretionary spending line. Decliners: ZUMZ -1.8%, ANF -1.0%, URBN -2.2%, ARO -2.4%, BKE -1.0%. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 5, 12:55 PM Janney Capital thinks consumers will tighten their belts this year but still sees some winners in consumer-oriented stocks. The firm calls Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF +1.1%) and Urban Outfitters (URBN +1.5%) two of its top picks in retail with margin improvement a major factor for the pair moving forward. Comment! [Consumer]
