- Thursday, February 14, 11:49 AM Lower costs and a better than expected cost outlook helped Alpha Natural Resources (ANR +16%) beat forecasts, and CRT Capital looks for more of that recovery in 2014-15, ensuring the cost structure and balance sheet flexibility "to make it through" until coal markets recover. But ANR says the coal market will remain uninspiring until coal inventories drop or gas prices blow through $4. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]

WIN -5%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Thursday, February 14, 8:58 AM More on Alpha Natural Resources' (ANR) Q4 results: Q4 loss narrowed from the year-ago period; included a $188M asset writedown based on conditions in the coal market and lower expected future production. Coal revenue fell 24% Y/Y, as the volume of coal sold fell 17% to 25.9M tons. Expects 2013 coal shipments of 81M-92M tons, vs. 108.8M in 2012. Shares +5.6% premarket. Comment! [Energy, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 14, 7:04 AM Alpha Natural Resources (ANR): Q4 EPS of -$0.19 beats by $0.33. Revenue of $1.6B beats by $0.05B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Wednesday, February 13, 5:30 PM Notable earnings before Thursday’s open: ABB, ABX, ALXN, ANR, APA, BGCP, BWA, CAB, CRIS, CVE, DISCA, DTV, DVA, DWRE, ECA, GELG, GM, GNC, GNRC, INCY, JAH, LNT, LUFK, MFA, NGLS, NRF, O, OAK, PDS, PEP, PPL, REGN, SHPG, STRA, TAP, UTHR, VMC, WM, ZIP Comment! [Earnings]
- Tuesday, February 12, 11:37 AM Among the moves made by Tom Gayner in Markel's (MKL) portfolio in the last quarter (13F): A near-doubling in the Calamos Asset Management (CLMS) stake, and big bumps in a couple of resource plays - Alliance Holdings (AHGP) and Alpha Natural (ANR). Gayner also doubled the firm's holdings of Nike (NKE), and tripled (pre-S&P lawsuit) the stake in Moody's (MCO). Comment! [Financials]
- Friday, February 8, 5:33 PM The U.S. Interior Department says it will investigate whether miners and traders skirted royalty payments on lucrative coal exports to Asia. Taxpayers may be losing hundreds of millions of dollars in forgone royalties under current rules governing coal exports. 9 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, February 7, 11:22 AM For all the troubles of the U.S. coal industry, its business with the rest of the world is brisk, setting a record for coal exports at ~120M tons in 2012. But U.S. coal shipped overseas goes overwhelmingly to Europe, whose sluggish economy may merit only a short-term blip for coal. Also, tougher environmental rules and coal plant phase-outs in the U.K. may start to erode cheap coal's advantage over nat gas. Comment! [Energy]
- Tuesday, February 5, 12:19 PM When one coal miner coughs, they all catch cold. Peabody (BTU -2.5%) dragged the sector down last week when it reported its quarter, and Arch Coal’s (ACI -9%) Q4 is having the same effect: ANR -1.6%, WLT -1.2%. Like BTU, ACI says it sees signs of a possible recovery in domestic coal during H2 2013, but those signs will evaporate unless natural gas prices move closer to $4/million BTUs. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 30, 2:17 PM On second thought, maybe Peabody's (BTU -5%) Q4 doesn't look so hot after all, as shares slump after yesterday's 5.6% gain and drag down other coal names: ANR -2.5%, ACI -3.4%, WLT -1.4%, CLD -2.7%. There's worry that U.S. revenues will be lower than expected and Australia costs will be higher. But Sterne Agee keeps its Buy rating, expecting Q1 will mark the low point for earnings. 2 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 23, 8:42 AM Walter Energy (WLT) and Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) are upgraded to Buy from Hold at Dahlman Rose, which sees catalysts from spot prices rising above the quarterly benchmark, potential supply issues in Mongolia, production cuts in the U.S. and continued strength in Chinese demand. The firm expects tempered commentary from coal companies during Q4 earnings. WLT +1.3%, ANR +1.9% premarket. 2 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 22, 7:27 PM Credit Suisse says this year's coal market is shaping up a lot like 2012 - "not a good thing" - foreshadowing gloomy 2013 outlooks and further production cuts as a theme through earnings season. Peabody (BTU), which already provided lower guidance, remains its top pick in coal, but it's cautious on Alpha Natural (ANR), citing risks of additional thermal coal production cuts and lower realized met coal prices. 11 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, January 18, 3:59 PM Sterne Agee predicts a cyclical pricing recovery for coal, driven by favorable inventory trends. It sees coal markets continuing to bottom in H1, while "producer discipline, economic/industrial activity improvement and fiscal efforts globally should support cyclical recoveries" in power-plant and steel-making coal in H2 and 2014. ACI +7.6%, ANR +2.4%, BTU +2.4%, JRCC +10.4%. 10 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, January 14, 2:12 PM The news that a traditional coal company is investing twice as much in natural gas as in coal - Consol (CNX -0.9%) forecasts 2013 investment in natural gas development of $835M-$935M vs. net investment in coal operations of $410M-$520M - is pushing down shares of most other coal miners: BTU -2.3%, ACI -2.6%, ANR -4%, WLT -3.1%, JRCC -2.8%. 4 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, December 31, 2012, 2:19 PM Coal stocks are posting decent gains in response to a strong Chinese PMI reading. in addition to Cliffs Natural, Peabody Energy (BTU +3.5%), Arch Coal (ACI +3%), Alpha Natural (ANR +4.6%), and Cloud Peak Energy (CLD +3.1%) are also rallying. Many coal stocks have sizable short interests, and many of those shorts have made big profits this year. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
