A123 Systems (AONE) +16.3% premarket after introducing a "breakthrough" lithium ion battery that optimizes performance in extreme temperatures. The nanophosphate EXT cells will be produced next year, and the technology will reduce the need for systems in electric cars to maintain a consistent battery temperature, helping solve a major cost issue.

The White House's $1B+ attempt to build an industry of companies that make batteries for electric vehicles is going flat. Firms have few clients and operate well below capacity, and their futures are in doubt. A major problem is that the government gave grants that were linked to production timetables which weren't tied to demand.

A123 Systems (AONE) is soaring 16.1%. With no major company news, the surge could be due to Fisker Automotive's disclosure that its hybrid electric-gasoline luxury Karma sedans generated revenue of over $100M in the first four months of the year. A123 supplies the battery packs for the Karma vehicles.

A123 Systems (AONE +12%), crushed over the last 12 months due to a litany of problems (I, II, III), is rallying post-earnings. Though A123's numbers badly missed estimates and the company reported cash burn of $73M, it also said it has fixed the battery defect that led to a massive recall, and that a federal grant with $120M in remaining proceeds has been extended by 2 years. A123 slashed its 2012 guidance last Friday.

A123 Systems (AONE -7.7%) continues its slide from last week after cutting FY12 guidance, further pressured today by a downgrade to Sell on valuation at Craig-Hallum following the report. The firm says AONE's outlook remains cloudy and that business would need to ramp substantially to justify its current share price.

Heavily-shorted A123 Systems (AONE +9.6%) adds to Friday's gains after announcing it's expanding its electric grid storage product line. A123's grid storage deals (I, II) have been a bright spot for a company whose electric car battery ops have been hit by disappointing sales and recalls.

The market for electric vehicles appears to be gaining steam in 2012, according to a tally of the most recent round of sales numbers. In Q1, domestic sales of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs increased 44% Y/Y to 113,457. The pickup in buying activity stands in contrast to an industry mired in a slump last year amid a safety probe on Chevrolet Volts, supply issues, and limited model options.
