APC vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
Anadarko Petroleum Corporation is among the largest independent oil and gas exploration and production companies in the world, with 2.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) of proved reserves as of December 31, 2009. Anadarko’s primary business segments are managed separately due to the... More

- Thursday, April 18, 9:11 AM Anadarko Petroleum (APC) says it struck gas in the Rovuma basin offshore Mozambique, as its Orca-1 discovery well encountered ~190 net feet of natural gas pay. The African country's gas blocks have become hot property after APC and Eni made discoveries of ~150Tcf of natural gas, enough to supply the world's biggest LNG importer, Japan, for 35 years. Comment! [Energy]
- Friday, April 5, 5:45 PM A recent report from Barclays highlights energy stock opportunities from around the world, with expectations running especially high for U.S. refiners such as VLO and TSO despite losses this week. U.S. E&P companies expected to do well are EOG, NBL and APC. CVX is cheaper than integrated rivals, and SU offers top risk-reward potential. In Asia, go-to names are PTR and SNP. 1 Comment [Energy, Global & FX, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, March 25, 3:19 PM Total compensation for Anadarko (APC) CEO Al Walker, who earned a promotion from COO to CEO last May, doubled to $19.7M last year while soon-to-retire ex-CEO James Hackett received $17.7M. APC shares were roughly flat in 2012. The company has found exploration success in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore Africa, but investors are wary ahead of a ruling in Tronox's $25B case brought against APC. Comment! [Energy]
- Monday, March 25, 10:13 AM Chevron (CVX +0.2%) says it found oil at its Walker Ridge Block 98 well in the deepwater Coronado prospect in the Gulf of Mexico, encountering more than 400 ft. of net pay. CVX holds a 40% interest in the prospect and is operator of the discovery well; ConocoPhillips (COP) owns 35% and Anadarko (APC) owns 15%. The multi-block Walker Ridge area is estimated to hold more than 200M boe. 4 Comments [Energy]
- Monday, March 25, 10:01 AM BP completes a successful flow test on its Itaipu pre-salt discovery off Brazil it says indicates commercially viable flow rates. The test achieved flow rates of up to 5,600 bbl/day of oil for 32 hours from its Itaipu-1A well located in the deepwater sector of the Campos Basin. BP holds a 40% operated stake in the block; Anadarko (APC) owns 33%. 1 Comment [Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, March 21, 4:23 PM The outlook for MLPs is rosy, according to Elvira Scotto, a director at RBC. In a report on the sector published by The Wall Street Transcript, Scotto says that thanks to low interest rates, MLPs have ready access to capital and can thus easily fund growth. This is good news for yield-starved investors as MLPs offer handsome payouts. Previously: MLPs will outperform even if rates rise. 8 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, March 20, 11:48 AM The big Shenandoah oil deposit, potentially one of the largest discoveries ever in the Gulf of Mexico, could contain 500M-1B boe, Citi analyst Robert Morris says in backing his Buy ratings for Anadarko (APC +3%), Cobalt (CIE +7.7%) and Marathon (MRO +0.8%). The discovery could boost APC's profits by $3-$6/share, CIE's by $2.50-$5/share and MRO's by $0.75-$1.50. 9 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 20, 8:43 AM Potential bidders for today’s Gulf of Mexico oil-lease round (including BP), with 7,000 deepwater blocks up for grabs, surely are heartened by Anadarko’s "potentially giant" find that dwarfs other discoveries in the Shenandoah Basin region. The success raises hopes the Gulf will remain an important oil-producing region for years to come. Premarket: APC +3%, COP +1.7%, CIE +7.3%, MRO +1.3%. Comment! [Energy]
- Tuesday, March 19, 5:19 PM Anadarko Petroleum (APC) +1.6% AH on news the Shenandoah-2 well in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico encountered more than 1,000 net feet of oil pay, in one of its largest oil discoveries in the Gulf. APC is operator of the well; partners include COP +0.3%, CIE +4.3%, MRO +0.6% AH. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 14, 3:29 PM Anadarko (APC +1.3%) has held early-stage talks with Exxon (XOM) and Shell (RDS.A) about selling a share of its natural gas discoveries offshore Mozambique, a top government official says. Although APC and Eni (E) plan to jointly develop an LNG plant there, neither has much experience with building and operating such costly plants; XOM and Shell are two of the world's top LNG investors and shippers. Comment! [Energy]
- Wednesday, March 13, 8:11 AM Anadarko Petroleum (APC) says it's in talks with potential customers in Japan to buy supplies from a joint liquefied natural gas plant in Mozambique it's planning with Eni (E). "We’re hopeful that the policy uncertainty around nuclear power and U.S. exports does not cause [the Japanese] to miss out," an APC exec says. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, March 5, 10:32 AM Anadarko (APC +3.2%) says it will sell a 12.75% interest in the Heidelberg deepwater oil project in the Gulf of Mexico to an undisclosed party for $860M to ensure funding until production starts in 2016. APC will continue to operate the project with a 31.5% interest; XOM, APA, E and STO own the remaining stake in the field, estimated to hold up to 400M barrels of recoverable resources. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 5, 3:54 AM Anadarko Petroleum (APC) and Indian billionaire Venugopal Dhoot have reportedly launched an auction to sell a 20% stake in the Rovuma natural gas field off the coast of Mozambique, which is on course to become a major provider of LNG to Asia. Any sale could bring in $4.5B, with potential suitors including PetroChina (PTR), Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Shell (RDS.A). Comment! [Energy]
- Monday, March 4, 9:39 AM Exxon Mobil (XOM) actually could use lower oil prices, WSJ's Liam Denning writes, since it would cut the price of acquisition targets. And XOM, due to host its annual analyst meeting Wednesday, may need a big deal. Its output in 2012 was barely higher than in 2003, and half of it was gas as oil prices have soared and gas has tanked. So to buy its way to growth, XOM could consider a target such as Anadarko (APC). Comment! [Energy, M&A]
- Wednesday, February 27, 5:58 PM Along with its Q4 results, Western Gas (WES) announces it's buying a 33.75% interest in Marcellus shale gas gathering systems from Anadarko (APC) for $490M, and a similar interest in Marcellus gathering systems from Chesapeake (CHK) for $133.5M. The assets have a combined throughput of over 1.2 Bcf/d. WES plans to to finance the purchases with $220M in cash on hand, credit facility borrowings, and the issuing of 449K shares at an implied price of $54.55. (PR) 1 Comment [Energy, M&A]
- Wednesday, February 20, 10:08 AM Anadarko's (APC -1.3%) 2013 production forecast of 5% growth falls at the low end of its longer-term expectations for 5%-7% annual growth, reflecting an oversupplied natural gas liquids market and weather disruptions. Production could be higher if the ethane market recovers, CEO Al Walker says. APC also expects $7.2B-$7.6B in 2013 capex, a similar amount to its spending last year. Comment! [Energy]
